After announcing last week that he'd tested for the role, Frank Grillo has now been confirmed as joining the cast of the upcoming superhero sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier, with Variety revealing that Grillo has signed on to portray the villain Brock Rumlow, a.k.a. Crossbones - a character best known for carrying out the assassination of Steve Rogers in the aftermath of Marvel Comics' Civil War storyline.

Having appeared in the likes of Pride and Glory, Edge of Darkness, Mother's Day and My Soul to Take, Grillo's star has been rising lately, with recent roles in films such as Warrior, The Grey and End of Watch, as well as the forthcoming releases Gangster Squad and Zero Dark Thirty.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier will see Anthony and Joe Russo (Community) directing a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (Captain America: The Winter Soldier). Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan are set to reprise the roles of Steve Rogers / Captain America and Bucky Barnes / The Winter Soldier, while Marvel newcomer Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker) has been cast as Sam Wilson / The Falcon alongside The Avengers stars Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) and Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill).

A shortlist for the female lead - thought to be Sharon Carter / Agent 13 - is said to include Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey), Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four), Imogen Poots (Fright Night) and Alison Brie (Mad Men). Meanwhile Lost alumni Josh Holloway (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones) and Kevin Durand (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) have all been rumoured as potential additions to the cast.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is expected to begin filming in spring 2013 ahead of a release on April 4th, 2014.
