The Killing has had a few ups and several downs over the course of its run. After two seasons it seemed to have lost a lot of its audience due to its meandoring story, and was cancelled. It was revived again, with AMC and Netflix teaming up to deliver a third season that did slightly better than the first two. AMC cancelled the show once again due to low ratings and lack of interest.
Well, Netflix has now come back again and ordered a final, six-episode fourth season that will only run on the streaming service. This shouldn't be a surprise since Netflix has been making a pretty successful effort to make original entertainment (see House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black and the upcoming Marvel miniseries Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and The Defenders).
The same creative team will be back for the fourth season of The Killing including creator/producer Veena Sud, with Joel Kinnaman and Mireille Enos to return to due to contractual obligations. Deadline says the show could be back on some time in 2014.
