At the New York Comic Con, it was revealed that Clark Gregg would reprise his role as the fan favourite Agent Phil Coulson in ABC's upcoming TV pilot S.H.I.E.L.D., and now it's been announced that the Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement Logistics Division has received its first new recruit, with Deadline reporting that Ming-Na Wen has joined the cast in the role of Agent Melinda May.
Originally referred to as Agent Althea Rice on the casting breakdown that arrived online earlier this month, Melinda is described as "soulful and slightly damaged by her combat experiences, [she] is an ace pilot, a weapons expert and a soldier who can - and has - gone beyond the call of duty." Wen has previously appeared in TV shows such as ER, Two and a Half Men, Stargate Universe and Eureka, while her feature film credits include The Joy Luck Club, Street Fighter, and Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.
Joss Whedon is currently co-writing the script for Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. alongside his brother Jed Whedon and sister-in-law Maurissa Tancharoen, with The Avengers director also expected to get behind the camera to helm the pilot. Expect further casting announcements soon.
