Johnny Depp (Dark Shadows, Pirates of the Caribbean) is in negotiations to star in Transcendence, the directorial debut of Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister. Plot details for the film, which has been written by newcomer Jack Paglen, are being kept under wraps. Pfister has commented that it will be a present-day science fiction film and it is believed to be in the same vein as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Inception. THR reports that the story centers on a man who creates a computer that develops a malevolent awareness.
The site also says that Noomi Rapace (Prometheus) is being considered as the film's female lead, James McAvoy (X-Men: First Class) and Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man) are possibilities for the other male lead, and Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) has been offered a supporting role. The film is due to start shooting early next year. Pfister's longtime collaborators Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas (he has worked on seven films with them, including The Dark Knight Rises and Inception) are executive producing.
Johnny Depp recently finished filming Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger with Helena Bonham Carter and Armie Hammer, which is due out in the UK on August 9th 2013.
