Our weekly round up of the latest stories from the world of screen superheroes, including Thor: The Dark World, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Ant-Man, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Captain Marvel, X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Wolverine, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and 3, Batman vs. Superman, Arrow, Beware the Batman, Teen Titans Go!, Justice League: War, Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. and more...

Thor: The Dark World Loki posterThe countdown to Thor: The Dark World continued this week as Marvel Studios released a selection of new character posters for Game of Thrones director Alan Taylor's upcoming solo sequel featuring Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) [see here], while Hiddleston also took the opportunity to discuss the recent reshoots, which were designed to increase the presence of the fan-favourite villain: "I'm in the film more than I was. I don't know quite how the decision was made, but we weren't redoing things we'd done before. We were adding new stuff. So that was fun for me. And some of the things were scenes I'd actually pitched for a long time ago... The thing about Kevin Feige is he's very, very open and collaborative. And he and Louis D'Esposito, who run the studio - I find it very admirable that they're open to ideas. Possibly more now than they would have been the first go-around. Chris Hemsworth [Thor] and myself have lived inside these characters for two movies now and we've been inside every scene and we know what works and we know what doesn't works. And also, we know what we've done and what we shouldn't try to repeat. Because that was the great sort of fire underneath myself was not wanting to take anything for granted or just put the old recipe in the microwave, you know? And try and find new things for the characters to do - new iterations of the relationship between Thor and Loki. And Kevin was really open to that. I remember as we were conceiving of the shape of the film, Kevin and Alan Taylor were really open to it, especially because they always talk about the connective aspect of the Marvel universe..."

...On the subject of Thor, Chris Hemsworth has put an end to any contract speculation by confirming that he's set to line up alongside Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Bruce Banner (The Incredible Hulk) in 2015's The Avengers: Age of Ultron when asked if he would return for another sequel, Snow White and the Huntsman 2: "I had a great time making [Snow White and the Huntsman]. I'm not sure what they plan on doing [with the sequel]. I'm kind of booked up in Avengers 2, we do Avengers next year and that kind of takes up most of the year."  Meanwhile, writer-director Joss Whedon has also spoken about the first new addition to the cast of Age of Ultron, explaining why he chose James Spader (Stargate, Boston Legal) to portray the titular villain: "Spader was my first and only choice. He's got that hypnotic voice that can be eerily calm and compelling, but he's also very human and humorous. Ultron is not Hal [from 2001: A Space Odyssey]. Spader can play all of the levels. He's the guy to break The Avengers into pieces..."

Captain America Black Widow kiss
...Back in June a set photo from Captain America: The Winter Soldier saw Chris Evans' Steve Rogers locking lips with Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff, and now Johansson has spoken about the relationship between Cap and Black Widow in next year's sequel during an interview with Coming Soon: "In Avengers particularly you start to see the relationships forming between these characters, and all of us have very specific relationships with one another. Of course we all know how we feel about one another. We work and all use each other in different ways. We all have very specific opinions about one another. I think that Joss laid the groundwork for a lot of interesting connections. That's why the audiences are so intrigued by that film because they love to see how these characters react to each other that come from completely different universes. The pairing is strange on paper, but you'll understand the pairing when you see Cap 2 and of course Marvel's really good at noticing those connections too! They will continue to build on the different relationships that audiences connect to..."

...We're only a fifth of the way into Phase Two at the moment, but it seems that Marvel can't wait to get stuck into Phase Three, with Disney announcing that it's moved the release date of Edgar Wright's Ant-Man up four months from its original November 2015 date (where it was set to open alongside Bond 24), with Hank Pym now set to make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut on July 31st, 2015 - just two weeks after the arrival of Warner Bros.' hotly-anticipated Man of Steel sequel Batman vs. Superman. Seems like an attempt to try and cut into the repeat business of Batman vs. Superman in an effort to prevent the WB team-up from out-grossing Age of Ultron (and should it topple the World's Finest from the top of the box-office, give Marvel Studios bragging rights that Ant-Man has managed to dethrone DC's two biggest superheroes)...

...A couple of weeks back Katee Sackhoff put herself in the running for the role of Ms Captain Marvel in a potential Marvel feature by suggesting that "there's been some stuff going on [and] a lot of checking of availability for the first quarter of next year", but now the Riddick star has backpeddled in an interview with Crave Online, claiming that her words had been taken entirely out of context: "If you go back and actually listen to what I said, I said that people have checked my availability. I never said Marvel [or] Disney so it’s interesting how people twist stories to serve an agenda that makes people click on their site, or sell their papers. I absolutely have not spoken to Marvel. It doesn’t mean that my team hasn’t spoken to Marvel. I personally have not spoken to Marvel and have no plans to do a movie in the immediate future... I would love to do the role. Of course I would love to do the role. I think that it’s in my wheelhouse and I would enjoy it. I’d be stupid to turn down a Marvel movie but as far as I know, Ms. Marvel isn’t even in the next movie." The cynic in me says it's also interesting how actors and actresses throw up ambiguous comments about Marvel to serve an agenda that makes people go see their movie, or encourage fans to campaign for their casting...

...Shifting to the small screen and with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. set to premiere in less than two weeks, ABC and Marvel have continued their marketing blitz with an updated website, five clips from the pilot episode, a behind-the-scenes featurette and a new TV spot, while Hero Complex posted an interesting article on the development of the sure-to-be-massive show featuring comments from Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson), Marvel's Head of Television Jeph Loeb, and co-creators Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen...

...Shifting to 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise and Hugh Jackman has been speaking about next year's sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past, as well as director Bryan Singer's influence on the superhero movie genre: "I keep saying it's like two movies in one but the size of it, it's like three in one! [It's] going to blow people away because the story - Bryan Singer is going to be the first director to make increasingly better movies in a franchise, I'm not sure if there's anyone else that's done it. Few people credit Bryan for what he deserves credit for, which is really inventing that genre. There wasn't really a superhero genre before X-Men came out. Funny enough, I remember catching a plane while we were promoting The Prestige with Christopher Nolan [who] said to me that he'd always had Batman in his mind. Even way back before 2000, he had the version of Batman that he ended up making in his head. He said, 'when I went into the cinema and saw X-Men, I said damn, that's my idea.' The idea that you could really dive in to the emotional life, to the vulnerability of these characters and that, as well as being fantastical, amazing and action, is what's going to hook people and make them care. That's what Bryan did, he had a lot of courage to do that..."

...X-Men: Days of Future Past will see Jackman taking on the role of Wolverine for a seventh time, and judging by his recent comments, the actor may be starting to think it's time to hang up the adamantium claws: "[Days of Future Past] may be the last. It didn't hit me until three weeks before the end [of shooting X-Men: Days of Future Past], because we promoted The Wolverine and I came back on set with three weeks to go, and that's when I went, 'Well, who knows? Maybe there's no more Wolverine. Maybe this is it. Who knows?' So I really made the most of those last few weeks. I enjoyed every time I put the claws on. I nicked everything off the set, so Halloween, come to me and I'll hook you up. I keep saying [X-Men: Days of Future Past] like two movies in one, but with the size of it it's really three in one. It really is going to blow people away because of the story..."

...In a couple of cases of Marvel 'What If?', it appears that Hugh Jackman could have already made his seventh appearance as Wolverine, with Jackman revealing that he was originally lined up to appear as Logan alongside Tobey Maguire's wall-crawler in Sam Raimi's first Spider-Man movie back in 2002 - if it wasn't for a misplaced costume: "In the first Spider-Man - Kevin Feige reminded me of this - we really tried to get me to come on and do something, whether it was a gag or just to walk through the shot or something. The problem was, we couldn't find the suit. The suit was stuck in some thing. And so when they were in New York when I was there, we couldn't get it together." Meanwhile, Jackman then went on to once again express his desire to see Fox, Sony and Marvel Studios working out a deal for a cross-over between the studios' respective Marvel properties: "I actually asked some high level people about it. Because the optimist in me goes, 'Why not? Why can't we do it? You know, a split cast or whatever?' And someone reminded that the amount of money Fox paid compared to the amount of money Disney paid is very different [laughs]. So how you split that pie up? God knows. But in the comic books, what's great about it is they're just mashing together all the time -- and it's awesome. And people are like, 'Yeah, well, let's get this one with that!' And, you know, I still think, one day, there may be an ability to do it." Meanwhile, it's also emerged that Logan came close to donning his iconic yellow suit in this year's The Wolverine, with Legacy Effects modeler and sculptor Adam Ross (Iron Man 3, Pacific Rim, RoboCop) posting an image of an unused costume which he created for the film; check it out here...

...Another X-Men star hoping for a crossover of sorts is Ellen Page, with the actress stating that she'd love to link up with The Avengers director Joss Whedon for a solo Kitty Pryde movie: "Well, I'm available! [Laughs.] I love that. Kitty Pryde's awesome. I'm super grateful to be the actress who's gotten to be her, and you only desperately hope that the true fans who have a right to demand what they want and who have been passionate about these stories for a really long time, that you can pull it off for them. I would be so thrilled to play Kitty Pryde again. I really would..."

...With so many villains seemingly set to feature alongside Andrew Garfields wall-crawler in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, there have been persistent rumours that Sony plan to introduce the Sinister Six into the Spidey movie universe. Well, it seems like we now have confirmation on that being the plan from two of the sequel's villains in Paul Giamatti (The Rhino) and Jamie Foxx (Electro); first up was Giamatti, who said, "I believe there’s a lot of stage-setting for the next film [in The Amazing Spider-Man 2]. There are several villains in this movie, and some of them are more foreground and important. Jamie Foxx [Electro] is and stuff. A couple of us are more hanging around the background because I think there will be a bigger deal... I don’t actually know [if The Sinister Six is the plan], but that seems to be what they’re doing. I’m not an idiot either, but I can’t claim hard and fast knowledge of this. I won’t. I can’t because I don’t actually know, but you and I can speculate." Foxx on the other hand seemed much more certain, telling Total Film that "Yes, they actually talked about that, The Sinister Six, so our fingers crossed" while Chris Cooper also went on to tease a bigger role for Norman Osborn in The Amazing Spider-Man 3, telling Access Hollywood that: "This is an introduction to Norman Osborn and apparently this leads to better things in Spider-Man 3. I think it's fair to say he's on his last legs. I don't know if I can say anything more..."

...Now, if you thought the casting of Ben Affleck as Batman in Warner Bros.' Batman vs. Superman caused outrage, just imagine what this would do - pop brat Justin Bieber has teased the possibility of him appearing in the hotly-anticipated Man of Steel sequel as Robin the Boy Wonder by posting an image of himself holding an alleged copy of the script by David S. Goyer and Zack Snyder. Now, before rushing out to set up a petition, it should be noted that Bieber is set to shoot a new Funny or Die sketch, so we can only hope it's got something to do with that...

...In other Batman vs. Superman news, it's been revealed that regular Zack Snyder cinematographer Larry Fong (300, Watchmen, Sucker Punch) will take over from Man of Steel DoP Amir Mokri on the sequel, while Warner Bros. CEO has spoken about Batfleck, saying that Affleck is "perfect" for the role of a "tired, and kind of weary and seasoned" Batman. Meanwhile, Josh Brolin (Men in Black 3, Oldboy) has also confirmed that he was under consideration for the next Dark Knight, as well as responding to the furor surrounding Affleck's casting: "I didn't have conversations about it, but Zack, that was part of his idea. It just didn't turn out. It's OK. It is OK. You know, another scenario might have worked better, but I'm happy for Ben. I've never seen such a global reaction in my life, I feel for him, truly. I would not want to be him right now. The reaction becomes so personal. It's like, 'F*ck this guy, I wish he was dead.' And you're like, 'What? Dude, seriously?' This guy is just working like you are. He's doing the same thing you are. He's trying to make the best choices he can... I want him to kick ass and I want everyone to love it and kind of eat their words..."

...Joseph Gordon-Levitt appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman this week, during which he was asked why his character John Blake wouldn't be picking up the mantle of The Dark Knight in the 2015 team-up: "Well, I think these new movies aren’t necessarily...I don’t know, first of all. I haven’t read any of the new movies. I’m not involved in them at all. But I don’t know if they are so much a continuation of the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy. I don’t think they’re really very connected. At least, I don’t... I actually don’t even know." Meanwhile, The Dark Knight Rises star also became the latest actor to offer his support for Batfleck, stating that, "I think he's going to be really good..."

Grant Gustin cast as The Flash
...The search for The Flash is over, with The CW and Warner Bros. Television announcing that Glee star Grant Gustin has been cast as Barry Allen for the second season of the hit superhero show Arrow. Gustin is set to appear in episodes eight, nine and twenty of Arrow season two, with the latter acting as a backdoor pilot for the character's own series, and becomes the latest name to sign on as a familiar DC character after Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Spartacus) as Amanda Waller, Summer Glau (Firefly) as Isabel Rochev, Caity Lotz (The Pact) as Black Canary, Michael Jai White (The Dark Knight) as Bronze Tiger, Kevin Alejandro (True Blood) as Brother Blood and Bex Taylor-Klaus (The Killing) as Sin. Arrow is set to return to TV screens for its second season next month, and you can check out a couple of new promos here and here...

...In addition to clips from the latest round of Beware the Batman and Teen Titans Go! on DC Nation [see here], Warner Bros. Animation has given us our first look at two more characters from next year's DC Universe Animated Original Movie Justice League: War in Darkseid (Steve Blum) and Shazam (Sean Astin), while Shemar Moore has spoken to I Am Rogue about lending his voice to Cyborg, as well as throwing his hat in the ring for a live-action outing as the former Teen Titan: "I’d be a liar if I didn’t say I have a fantasy or wish that [hopefully] I should be able to play Cyborg in a feature film. I’d love it if they were able to do something with the Justice League to where I could join a group of actors and go out there and be Cyborg. [Justice League: War] is just the beginning, but this is another avenue of entertainment that I now get in to play in and I really had a ball. Once they showed me the ropes and what it was, it was one of the most fun things that I’ve done as far as performing. If I could get out there and play Cyborg, that’s the ultimate goal. It’s an honor to play a part of the Justice League family and to be on these DVDs, but I would be a liar if I said I’m not aiming to be Cyborg in a feature film..."

...And finally, on the Marvel Animation front, we've got a clip from this weekend's episode of Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. which sees the Green Goliath going up against Devil Dinosaur; check it out here.
