Deadline is reporting that HBO has placed "one of its biggest commitments ever" ordering a pilot from Warner Bros. TV for a series based around Michael Crichton's classic sci-fi thriller Westworld, which is to be produced by Jonathan Nolan (Person of Interest) and Jerry Weintraub (Ocean's Eleven), along with J.J. Abrams' (Star Trek Into Darkness) Bad Robot. The script for the pilot has been written by Nolan and Lisa Joy (Burn Notice), while Nolan will also handle directing duties.

Released in 1973, Westworld starred Richard Benjamin and James Brolin as two guests visiting a futuristic Western themed amusement park, only to find themselves stalked by Yul Brynner's android gunslinger after a computer malfunction. A big screen remake has been on the cards for several years now, with Arnold Schwarzenegger (The Last Stand) linked to the Brynner role and Tarsem Singh (Mirror Mirror) previously attached to direct.
