UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 25th - Sunday 27th August 2013...
Despite mixed reviews - especially next to that of his debut, District 9 - Neill Blomkamp's sci-fi Elysium comfortably topped the UK box office chart in its opening weekend, with the Matt Damon starrer pulling in £3,127,005 to claim first place. That's an improvement over District 9 (which in fairness, it should have been given its leading man), although if you strip out the £974k of Thursday previews, then Elysium's three-day weekend just falls short of its predecessors £2.29 million opening.
Elysium wasn't the only newcomer to make an impact in the top ten, with the Jason Sudeikis / Jennifer Aniston comedy We're the Millers pulling in £1,508,326 in second and franchise hopeful The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones underwhelming somewhat in fourth with £1,143,385, which includes £474k of Wednesday and Thursday previews. However, the big winners this past weekend were the animated holdovers, with Disney's Planes adding another £1,165,315 in third and Monsters University and the year's highest-earner Despicable Me 2 both performing well despite having been on screens for the best part of two months now.
