Marvel may dominate the box office but DC Entertainment has topped the comic book sales charts in July with Superman: Unchained #2 taking the top spot followed by Batman #22. Securing the fourth spot was Justice League #22 which serves as the opening instalment of the crossover series Trinity War where three of the Justice League teams battle each other.
Comic-Con International: San Diego 2013 launched a charity auction benefitting the We Can Be Heroes campaign by unveiling eightJustice League inspired KIA Sorento cars; so far $2 million has been raised. Another major attraction was the celebration of Superman’s 75th Anniversary with the centre piece being the original Action Comics #1 appearing alongside the latest cinematic Last Son of Krypton, Henry Cavill. The biggest surprise of all was the announcement made by Man of Steel director Zack Snyder which will see a World's Finest movie arriving in the summer of 2015.
“Superman and Batman are icons, pure and simple,” stated Diane Nelson, DC Entertainment President. “Their popularity stretches across all media. Having them paired together on the big screen is something fans are extremely excited about, and seeing both heroes – and their team, the Justice League– topping the comic book sales charts is further proof of that.”
Second printings have been made of the first two issues of The Wake by Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy. A key new launch will be Trillium by writer/artist Jeff Lemire which is a sci-fi love story in oversized flip book about two separated souls. “The second half of 2013 is going to be an exciting, innovative and important few months for us,” remarked Nelson. “From Neil Gaiman’s return to the world of Sandman, the fantastic 3-D Motion covers adorning our Villains Month titles and the epic crossover that is Forever Evil, we hope fans are ready for a fun ride.”
