As Universal celebrates its 100th anniversary, it's only fitting that the studio pays homage to its rich horror history with a new entry in the classic Universal Monsters series, although sadly I doubt this one has much chance of recapturing any of the magic of its predecessors. I'm talking of course about the sequel-turned-remake to 2010's box office disappointment The Wolfman (itself a remake of the 1941 Lon Chaney, Jr. classic The Wolf Man), which is now going by the name of Werewolf: The Beast Among Us and has just received its first trailer ahead of a direct-to-DVD release in October.
Werewolf: The Beast Among Us is directed by Louis Morneau (Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead, Hitcher II: I’ve Been Waiting) and stars Stephen Rea (Underworld: Awakening), Steven Bauer (Scarface), Ed Quinn (Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation), Nia Peeples (The Young and the Restless), Guy Wilson (The Open Door), Adam Croasdell (EastEnders) and Ana Ularu (Anaconda 4: Trail of Blood). Seems to be some veteran straight-to-video sequel talent involved, so expect this one to be appropriately awful. Anyway, here's the synopsis, followed by the trailer:
"During his studies with the local doctor (Stephen Rea), Daniel (Guy Wilson) witnesses the horrific consequences of werewolf attacks. Watching as the beast’s fearsome reputation draws bounty hunters, thrill seekers and charlatans to the tiny town, Daniel dreams of destroying the ruthless predator. So when a mysterious stranger (Ed Quinn) and his team of skilled werewolf hunters (Stephen Bauer, Adam Croasdell) arrive to pursue the monster, he offers to join them, despite his mother’s (Nia Peeples) protests. But it soon becomes clear that this creature is stronger, smarter and more dangerous than anything they have faced before. As casualties mount and villagers see their neighbors transformed into ravening monsters, the townsfolk take up arms against each other to find the true identity of the werewolf. Amid the hysteria, Daniel begins to suspect he’s closer to his target than he ever dreamed."
Werewolf: The Beast Among Us is released in the States on October 9th, with a UK date yet to be announced.
