Luke Owen on the trailer for Hitchcock...
It’s been a very quiet production for Hitchcock, given that we live in the Internet age where everyone knows everything about every film. Just look at the reboot for RoboCop – they’ve only been filming for a couple of weeks and already we’ve seen Robo in action (albeit in picture form) and seen the bad guy. What else is there to see?
Aside from the first official image of Anthony Hopkins as the man himself, a teaser poster and some other photos from People Magazine, we’ve not seen or heard anything from this movie.
Until now....
Today saw the release of the first trailer for Sacha Gervasi’s Hitchcock, a biopic of sorts that documents the production of Alfred Hitchcock’s most famous movie – Psycho. But from what we can see from the trailer, it doesn’t look like the making of Psycho will be the driving force of the film.
Instead we get the more interesting angle of the relationship between Hitchcock and his wife Alma Reville, played by Helen Mirren. Just from the few snippets of dialogue exchanges, we can see that the interplay between Hopkins and Mirren is fantastic and their chemistry looks to be phenomenal. Outside of our main stars we also get a few insights into Scarlett Johansson’s Janet Leigh, who also looks to be in fine form. While I can’t say she really looks like Miss Leigh (because she just looks like Scarlett Johansson), the make-up work on Hopkins looks brilliant to the point you wouldn’t know it was Hannibal Lecter underneath. From his mannerisms to his pose, Hopkins has nailed this part perfectly. There could be an argument made about his voice (he’s certainly not as gruff as the Hitchcock we’re used to), but it looks like he’s done a really good job of portraying this iconic man of cinema.
The trailer also gives us just enough footage of other key moments of the film without giving too much away (which seems to be the case with most films nowadays). We get a glimpse at the filming of the shower scene, the problems he had selling the idea, and his battles with the studios and distribution. While it feels like we got a lot in these 2 minutes, I get the feeling we’ve only seen the tip of the knife.
The trailer for Hitchcock has got me more excited for the film than I could have imagined. It looks to have fantastic performances, a gripping narrative and wonderful characters. Roll on February 2013.
