Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man 2
If you're a fan of Spider-Man, then you'll be all too aware of the tragedy that befalls Gwen Stacy in the Marvel comic book universe, with the character falling to her death after being thrown from a bridge by Spidey's arch nemesis the Green Goblin - and Spider-Man himself delivering the fateful blow, breaking Gwen's neck as he misjudges the give on his webbing in a desperate act to save her. And now, it seems we'll get to see that saga played out on the big screen in next year's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, with Emma Stone seemingly confirming as much:

"Essentially the argument is that Spider-Man kills her by accident," states Stone in an interview with SFX (via Digital Spy). "So the person she loves is the person who kills her, which is the most horrifying thing. Apparently people unsubscribed to the comic book when that happened because they were just so flipped-out over it. But, of course, I want to stay true to that."

Fans have been speculating for some time that Marc Webb's rebooted series will incorporate elements of the classic 'The Night Gwen Stacy Died' comic book arc, so the character's death in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would come as little surprise. Expectations were bolstered by the news that the sequel will introduce Peter Parker's second love Mary Jane Watson (Shailene Woodley; The Descendants) and the Green Goblin himself, Norman Osborn (Chris Cooper; American Beauty), while just last month several set photos emerged showing Emma Stone standing on a bridge dressed in a very similar outfit to that worn by Gwen in her final appearance in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #121.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits cinemas on April 18th in the UK and May 2nd in North America, with a cast that also includes Andrew Garfield, Sally Field, Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, Dane DeHaan, Felicity Jones and Colm Feore.
