Terrence Malick appears to be making up for lost time. Having directed just five feature films - Badlands (1973), Days of Heaven (1978), The Thin Red Line (1998), The New World (2005) and The Tree of Life (2011) - across a thirty-eight year period, the acclaimed filmmaker has now commenced work on his third film in the space of two years, with Michael Fassbender (Prometheus) the latest name to join the cast of the currently-in-production 'Untitled Terrence Malick Project', having been snapped on set alongside Ryan Gosling (Drive)...
Formerly entitled Lawless, Malick's latest feature will see Fassbender and Gosling starring alongside Christian Bale (The Dark Knight Rises), Natalie Portman (Black Swan), Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and Cate Blanchett (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey). The film comes hot on the heels of the Ben Affleck-headlined drama To the Wonder [read our TIFF review here] and Knight of Cups, which is currently in post-production and also stars Bale, Portman and Blanchett alongside the likes of Wes Bentley (American Beauty), Joel Kinnaman (RoboCop), Antonio Banderas (Ruby Sparks), Freida Pinto (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Holly Hunter (The Piano) and Imogen Poots (Fright Night). Meanwhile, Malick is still attached to the documentary Voyage of Time - a Tree of Life spin-off said to present "an examination of the birth and death of the universe" - although this has been described as "a multi-year project", so don't expect it to arrive any time soon.
As with Malick, Michael Fassbender is also accumulating projects like there's no tomorrow; in addition to the upcoming superhero sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past, he's also attached to star in Twelve Years a Slave, The Counselor, Frank, Jane Got a Gun and Prometheus 2.
