It's time once again to visit the Church of Cinema, to sit with strangers in its hushed darkness, and to rejoice in the best that film has to offer...

Thank Flickering Myth it's Friday...

Hope Springs

Mmm...old people getting it on. What's not to like?

Tommy Lee Jones and Meryl Streep play an old couple who have lost their bedroom spark. Meryl, in desperation, books them into a sex 'n' marriage counseling holiday with Dr Feld (played by Steve Carell).

It's definitely one aimed at the grey pound, but the cast should be likeable enough to see other demographics through. Especially Jones and Streep. They're getting better with age.

Hope Springs is out today.

ParaNorman

You know when films have such great titles, you think they must have started there and worked their way backwards?

ParaNorman is a stop-animation children's movie form the same studio that made Coraline. The tone seems to be equally preoccupied with the grotesque as that 2009 film, as the 11-year-old protagonist Norman can see ghosts. He becomes embroiled in a plot involving a witchhunt and a centuries-old hex.

Coraline was very unsettling, but in a good way. Kids need to have the jeebies scared out of them more often.

ParaNorman is out today.

Premium Rush

The problem with movie car chases in the middle of cities is traffic. Roads are rarely so clear. That's why Premium Rush looks quite enticing. It's a bike chase movie.

The city is New York, and the cyclist is the always dependable Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He's developing a knack for action films, and hopefully he'll be able to carry one solely on his back. Give it a backy, if you will.

He has an envelope to deliver. A bad guy doesn't want him to deliver it. Sometimes plots don't need any more than that.

Oh, and the bad guy's played by Michael Shannon. There are few people scarier.

Premium Rush is out today.

Enjoy the philms.
