UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 29th - Sunday 31st March 2013...

The Croods movie posterDespite the arrival of several big new releases, DreamWorks' animated caveman comedy The Croods managed to retain the UK box office crown with an impressive second-weekend (or third, if you're counting previews) haul of £3.3 million. The Croods has already pulled in £10.61 million, and with the Easter school holidays still to come, it looks like this one could continue to club the competition over the next couple of weeks.

Best of the newcomers was the Jon M. Chu-directed sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which opened in second place with £2.76 million ahead of Danny Boyle's mind-bending thriller Trancein third with £1.59 million. The latest Stephenie Meyer adaptation The Host failed to come anywhere close to Twilight figures, banking £991k to debut in fifth behind Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Slayer.

In the bottom half of the chart, Oz the Great and Powerful, Identity Thief and Side Effects all dropped three spots apiece to take sixth, seventh and eighth, while Disney-Pixar's 3D rerelease of Finding Nemo earned just £265k in its opening weekend, continuing the run of diminishing returns for Pixar's 3D reissues. Finally, taking the wooden spoon in tenth was another new arrival in Francois Ozon's romantic drama In the House with a respectable £209k from limited screenings.
