Villordsutch on the latest trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness...

Being spoon fed snippets throughout the previous year has led to this latest trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness, which judging by the content I would say is the last. I think we can finally put to bed the fact that Benedict Cumberbatch's John Harrison (J.H.) is now not Khan, which I’m thankful for. I adore The Wrath of Khan so what I didn’t want to see was a 21st shiny remake, and I’m glad I won’t.

However, running through this film is the core of Wrath of Khan, a film about vengeance and the destruction it brings. You have John Harrison whose vengeance has been long burning, vicious and aimed directly for the heart, then you have Kirk (Chris Pine) against J.H. which is new, out of control and destructive.

The trailer brings to the screen what Earth looks like under the banner of the UFP, sprawling busy cityscapes that meet the horizon and we are not just stuck with San Francisco Bay. However, London doesn’t come off so well as it appears to have been destroyed completely. We see a small explosion early on then a later pull back to see John Harrison standing above the wreckage. No more sprawling cityscapes and no more Cockerknees.

What else can we see from the trailer? For one J.H. does seem to be better at everything, whether it’s an impressive leap towards an armed foe (who may or may not be a Klingon), to gut punching Spock (Zachary Quinto) backwards. Even Carol Marcus (Alice Eve) seems taken with our New Bad as McCoy (Karl Urban) performs a check-up, as well as Scotty (Simon Pegg) looking on at his fallen crew with a rifle in hand. Hints of mind control are given.

Extreme measures are being taken to catch J.H. which highlights the young immature nature of the crew, still not seasoned in making decisions.  Quick examples include Kirk's eager attitude for Starfleet to be about vengeance and Spock leaping from a transport vessel with the ground hundreds of feet below and he has no pre-packed parachute, or jet boots. The crew still believes itself to be immortal, which makes me feel in this film they will see a reaction to their actions. Perhaps a main bridge crew death?

I truly cannot wait until the 9th of May, though I am disappointed with the UK release date as it was initially the 17th of May and that is my birthday. This trailer has fuelled my fire.
