A press release issued by Johnny Depp's representatives has confirmed that the star - appearing in this summer's The Lone Ranger - is officially confirmed for Wally Pfister's directorial debut, Transcendence. The Oscar-winning cinematographer will be handling his first project based on newcomer Jack Paglen's screenplay, with long time collaborators Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas serving as executive producers.
Whilst the press release itself states that producers are keeping the plot under wraps - which sounds very similar of the way Inception was handled - details have been leaked previously (you may want to avoid these if you prefer to know as little as possible) suggesting that the film will deal the world's first 'self-aware computer'.
Depp will be reportedly be joined by either Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Rebecca Hall (Iron Man 3) or Emily Blunt (Looper) as husband and wife computer programmers who are attacked by anti-technology terrorists attempting to sabotage the project by assassinating Depp's character. Depp's consciousness would then be uploaded to the computer and begin communicating through it.
Sounds like a cool concept, and very much a blend of Inception and The Matrix by the sounds of it. Interesting to see how this one develops. Transcendence will commence shooting this Summer and ahead of an as-yet-unrevealed release date by Warner Bros.
