2012 has certainly been a landmark year for superhero movies, with the three biggest comic book franchises - Batman, Spider-Man and the Marvel Cinematic Universe - all battling it out for superhero supremacy. Over the past few weeks, we've been asking you to vote on your favourite superhero movie of 2012, and while Earth's Mightiest Heroes may have dominated at the box-office, there's little doubt that the closing chapter of Christopher Nolan's epic Dark Knight trilogy has proved the comic book movie of choice for readers of Flickering Myth...

While it's not really surprising that The Dark Knight Rises should top our poll, I doubt anyone could have expected the film to have clinched victory by such a comprehensive margin, with Nolan's Batman swansong pulling in over 400 more votes than its nearest rival, The Avengers. However, even more of a surprise is the fact that 58 readers thought that Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance was the year's best superhero movie (seriously??) and only a late flurry of votes yesterday for Andrew Garfield's wall-crawler prevented The Amazing Spider-Man from picking up the wooden spoon.

Anyway, here's the full results...

The Dark Knight Rises - 1053 votes (58%)
The Avengers - 629 votes (34%)
The Amazing Spider-Man - 61 votes (3%)
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance - 59 votes (3%)

And lastly, thank you to everyone who took the time to vote in the poll!
