Comic Book Review - FF #1 and #2

Anghus Houvouras reviews the first two issues of Marvel NOW!'s FF...

"In the Fantastic Four’s absence, a hand-picked substitute squad—Ant-Man, Medusa, She-Hulk and Miss Thing—must guard Earth and the fledgling Future Foundation for four minutes. What could go wrong?"

I love a good comic book that isn't afraid to not take itself too seriously.  Mike Allred has spent much of his career on funny books that are based in the traditional superhero universe but have their own particular quirks.  If you've never read Madman or his extremely morbid and humorous take on X-Force, you're missing out.  His pop art styling and penchant for bizarre stories has served readers well.  This tradition of the unconventional continues as Allred has teamed with writer Matt Fraction for a new take on the Fantastic Four in the new Marvel Now! series FF.

FF is an offbeat addendum to the current Fantastic Four series also being written by Matt Fraction.  Reed Richards has decided to take his team into another dimension in search of a cure for an illness plaguing the legendary super team.  The journey will last a year for the team, but thanks to a nifty loophole in the space time continuum, they'll only be gone for four minutes.  In order to protect the Future Foundation and the 13 gifted children in their care, Reed decides to recruit a replacement team to step up for four minutes, or longer should something go terribly wrong.

The first issue sees Reed recruiting Scott Lang aka Ant-Man to take over in his absence.  Lang has recently lost his daughter, and Reed is smart enough to see the potential of teaming up an ailing parent with children in need of guidance.  Each member of the team has to select a replacement.  Sue Storm asks the Inhuman Goddess Medusa to fill in.  The Thing gets former member She Hulk to join up.  And the Human Torch asks his girlfriend pop singer Darla Deering to help fill out the roster.

After assembling the team, Reed and company take off for another dimension.  Soon after their departure the Mole Man shows up with a familiar gigantic monster and the new F.F. has to step up and save the day.  Their first adventure doesn't exactly go according to plan, but they get the job done.

The real strength of FF is the characters.  The series thus far plays like a great, awkward comedy of errors with a great cast of well intentioned heroes and dynamic secondary characters.  The entire enterprise has the same feel of off beat super groups like The Great Lakes Avengers, and there's a comedic sensibility that reminded me a lot of Futurama.  There are jokes peppered on every page and great subtle character moments.

Scott Lang / Ant-Man makes a great lead character.  He lacks the confidence of his peers and his leadership skills are suspect. Watching him try to explain his checkered past to a bunch of kids or deal with the tabloids is the kind of stuff that makes FF so unique, and so readable.  The other reason to read this book is Mike Allred's stunning art.  The pictures pop off the page.

Much like the latest Avengersre-launch, FF has done a masterful job of establishing characters and delivering an entertaining story.   While it may not be a traditional Marvel comic, FF is a prime example of a series firing on all cylinders.  Exceptional art, great characterization, and a creative team not afraid to get a little crazy.

Hands down the best new book of 2012.

Comic Book Review - Avengers #2

Anghus Houvouras reviews the second issue of Marvel NOW!'s Avengers...

"The greatest heroes in comics together on one unbeatable team! The Avengers 'go large,' expanding their roster and their sphere of influence to a global and even interplanetary level. When Captain America puts out his call - who will answer? Big threats, big ideas, big idealism - these are the Avengers NOW!"

I was excited about the first issue of the new Avengers series.  Marvel NOW! has been an interesting experiment that has been met with a certain degree of excitement as well as a fair amount of trepidation.  If you've been anywhere near the interwebs in recent weeks you've no doubt heard of the venom and hate being spewed at Dan Slott over the direction of the forthcoming Superior Spider-Man.  And many of the other recent titles have been met with a certain degree of ambivalence.  But I'm just going to say it now: Avengers is shaping up to be one of the best comic books on the shelf.

The second issue perfectly ties into the first.  After the core Avengers group take of to Mars and get their asses kicked, Captain America has to enact a plan he and Iron Man conceived to build a better team.  Much of the second issue is spent in flashback form with Steve Rogers and Tony Stark recruiting a diverse lineup of superheroes including some familiar faces as well as a few surprises.

Many of the recruits have been Avengers mainstays of the past five years, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Spider Woman, and Ms. Marvel among them.  The new talent pool being tapped into was something of a surprise.  New Mutants like Cannonball and Sunspot.  Awesome underused Marvel mainstays like Shang Chi: The Master of Kung Fu and Falcon.  And even a few characters that required some research (thanks Wikipedia!).  Writer Jonathan Hickman is having a lot of fun with the premise and the whole issue has a sense of fun sorely missing from so many superhero comics these days.  The recruiting scenes play out like an extended scene from X-Men: First Class and do a great job of capturing the essence of each character in a limited number of panels.  For a book about a dozen heroes, I feel like in just two issues I have an idea what each of them are about.  That's just good writing.

And the art, as I mentioned in last's month review, is just stunning.  Jerome Opena is drawing the best looking comic I've seen in ages.  His style is perfectly suited for the Avengers and I hope he sticks with the book.  He and Hickman are crafting one hell of a story arc.

Speaking of story, there isn't a lot of forward progress.  Our heroes are still trapped on Mars being detained by the a would be world conqueror named Ex Nihlo.  There's some exposition to flesh out his insane plot to forcibly evolve humanity, but you might as well change his name to 'Ex Machina' as he seems to be nothing more than a device to get the new Avengers assembled and give them something to punch.  Still, it felt like a needed break after the rapid fire pace of issue #1.  There's so much going on in the first two issues, and yet it never feels rushed or padded.

It may be way too early to be declaring Marvel NOW! a success or a failure, but I'm in.  I've been enjoying the new books and newly aligned creative teams on some of the major titles and I'm hopeful that Avengers will continue to build upon an impressive first two issues.

Producer Dan Lin provides an update on the Suicide Squad movie

Following the runaway success of Marvel's The Avengers earlier this year, rival studio Warner Bros. is becoming increasingly keen to exploit its roster of DC Comics characters by developing a superhero team-up of its own. Over the past few months, much of the talk has centred on Warner's proposed Justice League movie, which is said to be looking at a 2015 release where it will go head-to-head with The Avengers 2, while Guillermo del Toro has also spoken about his desire to bring the supernatural characters of the DC Universe to the screen with an adaptation of Justice League Dark entitled Heaven Sent.

However, one potential ensemble movie that looks to be on hold for the foreseeable future is that of Suicide Squad, with producer Dan Lin (Gangster Squad) providing Collider with a brief update on the adaptation, which has been in development at WB for the past couple of years: "[Suicide Squad] has a script from Justin Marks [Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li], but it's on hold right now. I think Warner Bros. wants to finish their A-list stories first and then we'll talk about stories like Suicide Squad."

The original Suicide Squad debuted in The Brave and the Bold in 1959 and revolved around a team of non-powered heroes, while the second incarnation was created in 1987 and features a group of incarcerated supervillains hired by the government to take part in top secret black ops missions. Led by Amanda Waller, the current New 52 line-up includes the likes of Deadshot, El Diablo, King Shark, Harley Quinn, Iceberg and Captain Boomerang.

In what can be viewed as fantastic marketing, Columbia Pictures has chosen to release a teaser clip via Yahoo! Movies for Evan Goldberg (The Green Hornet) and Seth Rogen's (Knocked Up) This is the End on the day that some people actually believe will be the end of the world. Unsurprisingly, Columbia Pictures must still be planning for the future, bearing in mind the film is set for release on June 14th, 2013.

This is the End (a.k.a. The End of the World) features an all star stars line up of new school comedy stars such as Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel (Tropic Thunder), James Franco (Pineapple Express), Craig Robinson (Hot Tub Time Machine), Danny McBride (Eastbound and Down) and Jonah Hill (21 Jump Street) and centres on six friends trapped in a house after a series of strange and catastrophic events devastate Los Angeles. As the world unravels outside, dwindling supplies and cabin fever threaten to tear apart the friendships inside. Once they discover that they are experiencing the Apocalypse, they must come to terms with why they were left behind. Eventually they are forced to leave the house, facing their fate and the true meaning of friendship and redemption.

With such a great line up, This is the End is sure to provide some laughs for 2013.

The Flickering Myth Reaction to the Pacific Rim trailer

The Flickering Myth writing team share their opinions on the first trailer for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim...

December has been a massive month for movies. Not only have we had huge releases like The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Jack Reacher and Life of Pi at the cinema, but we've also been inundated with new trailers for some of the biggest upcoming films of 2013. We've had glimpses of Star Trek Into Darkness, Oblivion, After Earth, The Lone Ranger, Man of Steeland G. I. Joe: Retaliation. One of the most surprising and fascinating trailers has been for Guillermo del Toro's blockbuster Pacific Rim, inspired by classic Japanese cinema. The director of Pan's Labyrinth appears to have crafted a film with an extremely intriguing and arty aesthetic, but on a monumental budget and scale. This rare combination has got the Flickering Myth writing team talking...

Chris Cooper: This has been on the far reaches of my radar for a while now. I hadn't really taken any notice and didn't know what it was. But after this, it has shot right up in my attentions - looks really impressive. Who wouldn't want to see Idris Elba (Thor, Prometheus) fight massive monsters in a massive robot?

Luke Graham: On the one hand, the look of Pacific Rim is cribbing a LOT from other films; it's hard not to be reminded of films like Real Steel, Transformers, Clash/Wrath of the Titans, Cloverfield, a list of films that are bad to middling at best. It even, bizarrely, has the voice of GLaDOs from Portal. On the other hand it looks so exciting! Del Toro is a fantastic film-maker and can easily elevate this kind of material above simple schlock. With a line like "Today, we cancel the Apocalypse" delivered by the always excellent Idris Elba, it already has better dialogue than the list of movies mentioned. I like the trailer so much I don't even mind the presence of the Inception BWAUM!

Rohan Morbey: I'm with Luke Graham on this, looks good despite being an amalgamation of many films ranging from the good (War of the Worlds) to the baaaaad (Transformers, Godzilla). I'm on board though, so GDT can sleep easy at night.

Luke Owen: I would never say this is an amalgamation of other movies. Pacific Rim is a love letter to Japanese kaiju cinema from the 60s and 70s - in particular the Showa era of Toho. The plot line is taken straight from their sci-fi movies, the monsters look to be based around the designs from Godzilla and Gamera, the Jaegers are based around tokusatsu shows like Ultraman etc. This is a kaiju movie made for a mass audience by someone who loves the genre. If you couldn't tell, I am very, very excited for this movie. The visuals look so good and given del Toro's history, we can expect to see some awesome designs for the kaiju. This could well end up as my favourite film next year. On top of that, should this film do well, it will really help Legendary Pictures' Godzilla reboot next year. And if that does well, we could see 2013 Legendary Pictures become the American equivalent of 60s Toho.

Furthermore (I'll be quiet after this I promise), even the trailer's tagline: "to defeat monsters we create monsters" is going back to the very early days of Godzilla where each movie was an allegory for world messages (Gojira - nuclear war, King Kong vs. Godzilla - Commercialism, Mothra vs. Godzilla - Capitalism). I'm now done.

Liam Trim: Like Rohan, I agree with Luke Graham. Del Toro is a director with some artistic flair and that means that what could have been a standard 'bigger is better' blockbuster, with lots of gigantic robots smashing things to bits, is likely to be one of 2013's most interesting mainstream releases. One of the thrillingly promising things about this trailer is the perspective of much of the action - whilst I'm sure there will be plenty of set piece battles between the machines and the aliens, large chunks of the scenes shown here are shot from the perspective of those on the ground. So we get intriguing, futuristic details at street level, as well as the reactions of actors to the unimaginable scale of the carnage unfolding way, way above their heads. Michael Bay would just give us mindless debris and the odd shot of Megan Fox pouting.

This seems like something with far more substance than a Transformers movie, despite the similarities on the surface. I also agree with Luke Owen that the tagline is telling in itself. Yes, it may be trying a bit too hard to be both dramatic and intellectual but it reveals that Pacific Rim will try to get your mind racing as well as your pulse. I hope it turns out to be one of those action films that has something meaningful, topical AND exciting to say.

Jake Peffer: After watching the trailer, this is now the movie I'm most excited for next year. Del Toro is a great director and I can't wait to see what he does with a huge movie like this. The cast looks great as well. It's always great to see Idris Elba in anything and this will be the movie that finally makes Charlie Hunnam (Green Street, Children of Men) a star, regardless of whether the movie is good or not. The only gripe I have with the trailer is that it makes the movie look very CG heavy, which isn't a bad thing but it's not always a good thing either. It looks like it works very well in the trailer though so I can only imagine it'll be even better on the big screen.

Simon Columb: Between After Earth, Oblivion and Pacific Rim, it looks like there are going to be one too many sci-fi films in 2013. And in all of them, Earth looks like shit... so is there a pessimistic theme and attitude running through Hollywood?

Gary Collinson: After reading Anghus' 'Big Questions of 2013' article, I was wondering whether there was going to be a market for big budget kaiju, but now that the trailer's here, I've got no doubt that this is going to do well. I think that apart from Star Trek Into Darkness this is probably my favourite trailer from all the ones we've seen this month. Of course, big spectacle doesn't necessarily mean we'll get a good film, but it'll put plenty of bums on seats.

Oliver Davis: Where's Pan?

Anghus Houvouras: My inner child is doing back flips  My inner industry analyst is rubbing his goatee and going "hmmmmmmmmm". I'm there on day one. Robots, giant monstrosities from another dimension, and Idris Elba declaring "cancel the apocalypse" is cause for celebration. I'm already clearing space on my shelf for whatever toy line is released in conjunction with the film. But let's not delude ourselves. Del Toro has yet to deliver a big budget movie worth a damn. The Hellboy movies were profoundly mediocre. This is a level he hasn't worked on before. Maybe this is his home run. Or maybe he's made another movie that will have a hard time bringing anyone other than the hardcore geeks into the theatre  And don't kid yourselves; the lack of a marquee name will severely limit the appeal of Pacific Rim.

Matt Smith: I don't really want to say too much in terms of background to the film and what'll happen, purely because this trailer is the first I've seen of Pacific Rim. Shows how much I'm plugged in to the world of film. I'm sure like a lot of people, the presence of Idris Elba is enough to get my attention. Del Toro, however, is a mixed blessing for me. He hasn't made any film that has made me a genuine fan. His films, Pan's Labyrinth in particular, are fantastic in design, but there hasn't been anything that has grabbed my attention enough on an emotional level. Hellboy, for me, was a good film but not spectacular enough for his name to mean I'm going to watch. I'm just hoping del Toro hasn't bitten off more than he can chew. It definitely has the potential to be a thinker as well as a heart racing, robot vs monster slugathon. My cynical side can't help but question whether this is another case of a fantastic, genuine-work-of-art trailer for a mediocre film. But, as detractors of the modern, Internet-age 'ADD' sufferers might hate to hear, that was still one hell of a trailer.

What's the verdict then? Is Pacific Rim worth seeing in 2013, a year that seems as if it will be crowded with big releases? Of course our critics are naturally sceptical and rightly wary of stunning trailers promoting profoundly disappointing final products in the recent past. But there is also genuine optimism about the passion and skill of del Toro, as well as the cast he has assembled. The most interesting debate seems to be about the motivations behind Pacific Rim as a project. Is it a love letter to Japanese cinema, as Luke Owen argues, or is that aspect going to be overshadowed by the demands of the Hollywood studios, who want the next profitable Transformers franchise, not an arty allegory? We'll have to wait until the summer to find out, but keep checking Flickering Myth for updates on the film and reviews when it is finally released!

Pacific Rim is scheduled for release in the UK on July 12th 2013.

Damon Lindelof not writing Prometheus 2

It was one of the most anticipated movies of 2012, but writer Damon Lindelof will not be coming back to write the sequel to Ridley Scott's Prometheus. In an interview with Collider, the Lost writer explained why.

"Ridley [Scott] and I talked at great length during the story process of the first movie about what subsequent movies would be if Prometheus were to be successful" he said in the interview. "And I think that the movie ended in a very specific way that hinted at, or strongly implied that there were going to be continuing adventures worthy of writing stories. What those stories would be would not necessarily usurp or transcend the Alien franchise as we saw it because we know that the Nostromo hasn’t come along yet. So the idea was to set up a universe that… Is it a prequel? Okay. If that’s what we want to call it, sure. But the sequel to this movie is not Alien. The sequel to this movie is this other thing."

He continues, "So Ridley and I talked about what that other thing might be, and he was excited about doing it. But then I think what ended up happening was that the movie came out, and there was a reaction to the movie. And I got really wrapped up in Star Trek, and really wrapped up in this movie that I’m producing and writing with Brad Bird. And I have a TV project that I was really passionate about. Ridley and I had a meeting after Prometheus came out where we started talking again about where this journey would go. And in that meeting I said to him, unfortunately, before he could ask me and go through the discomfort of whether he was going to ask me or not… It’s sort of like having a date where you’re letting the other person know, 'I'm another relationship.' So I can’t tell you that he asked me and I said no. But I did communicate to him that I was working on these other things."

Of course, Lindelof was not the first writer on Prometheus as he was brought on to re-work the script by Jon Spaihts. "The thing about Prometheus was it was a rewrite. Jon Spaihts wrote a script and I rewrote it. And still it was a year of my life that I spent on Prometheus, kind of all in. The idea of building a sequel to it—from the ground up this time—with Ridley is tremendously exciting. But at the same time, I was like, “Well that’s probably going to be two years of my life.” I can’t do what J.J. [Abrams] does. I don’t have the capability. I’m usually very single-minded creatively. I can only be working on one thing at a time. So I said to him, 'I really don’t think I could start working on this movie until I do this other stuff. And I don’t know when the other stuff is going to be done.' And he was like, 'Well, okay, it’s not like I asked you anyways.' He and I are on excellent terms and it was a dream come true to work with him. But much to the delight of all the fanboys, I don’t see myself being involved in Prometheus-er."

It's fair to say that there wasn't a film out this year that split opinions quite like Prometheus and a lot of the negativity the film received was placed upon Lindelof so it shouldn't come as a huge surprise that he won't be back for the sequel. We will keep you up to date with any new Prometheus 2 news when it comes in.

Ben Affleck on Justice League and The Avengers

Back when Justice League was announced in June, the first man whose name was attached to it was Argo director Ben Affleck. However the rumour was quickly debunked a few days later. In that time, Affleck has remained mostly quiet about the project but in an interview with Hitflix, he spoke out about Justice League as well as Marvel's The Avengers.

"I just want to make it clear because it’s not like I had something to even pass on," he said. "Because someone will eventually do Justice League and they'll go, like, 'Ben Affleck passed on it,' and it won't be true. So I don’t mind setting the record straight. It's one of those things where the closest I came was some people talked to me about it like at a meeting. They were like, 'Here's the stuff we’re doing,' you know? 'Here’s what we're looking at.' That kind of thing. And they suggested it. But I don’t think there’s a script. I don’t think there’s anything."

Many have speculated that it seems that Warner Bros. are just making a Justice League movie as a reaction to the box office success of The Avengers. However despite not ever getting involved in the project, Affleck remains positive about the movie: "I think there’s a DC Avengers that could be done because they have the characters for it, and there’s some stuff in the comics now that’s kind of interesting, and it’s cool."

He continues, "That's what Marvel does so well. They do a lot of things well, but one of the things that I’m really impressed by is how they co-ordinated all those movies. I mean, you never see somebody make a whole movie with the eye of, like, building it into new sequels, but that's because you're just hoping it’s a hit and you’ll do it again. But for shooting these kind of satellite movies with the notion that later on you’ll build the planet that they're orbiting around, and coordinating it all ahead of time, and imagining how the story's going to work and flow with Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, it’s a big deal. You don't see that level of organisation much in movies. You know what I mean? It's like enough to just get one movie together and off the ground."

Although establishing himself as a drama director with movies such as Gone Baby Gone and The Town, Affleck added that he wouldn't be adverse to doing a superhero movie. "I would love it," he said. "My interest is really just in, you know, if I like the characters and if the stories seem smart and surprise me. The things that people look for. So those things exist in the superhero genre. And when they do, I think it’s really exciting."

Since the movies announcement, Justice League has had several directors rumoured to be attached including Brett Ratner (X-Men: The Last Stand) and McG (Charlie's Angels), but so far the project has no director, although Will Beall (Gangster Squad) is reportedly writing a script. The movie is still scheduled to be released in 2015.

Simon Pegg (Star Trek Into Darkness) has released the first image from the final chapter of the Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy - The World's End - via his Twitter.

The image shows cast members Pegg, Nick Frost (Attack the Block), Paddy Considine (The Bourne Ultimatum), Martin Freeman (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) and Eddie Marsan (Sherlock Holmes) in the pub The World's End, in what could be the first act of the movie (there are people in the background)...

In The World's End, five friends who reunite in an attempt to top their epic pub crawl from 20 years earlier unwittingly become humanity's only hope for survival. The film is once again directed by Edgar Wright, and looks to be more Shaun of the Dead than Hot Fuzz.

The World's End is set for release 14th August 2013. The movie wrapped today so we can expect a trailer early next year.

The Amazing Spider-Man is Dead, Long Live The Superior Spider-Man

Anghus Houvouras defends the controversial storyline leading in to Marvel NOW!'s Superior Spider-Man...

The last few weeks have been a maelstrom of anger and rage over writer Dan Slott's conclusion to The Amazing Spider-Man.

Major spoilers ahead - be warned...

Leading up to the conclusion of nearly fifty years of stories, Slott has written a storyline that sees Peter Parker's mind switched with the evil supergenius Doctor Otto Octavius.  The conclusion of the story has been leaked online revealing that Parker does not survive their final encounter leaving your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man dying in the body of an old man, while Octavious takes over Peter's body for good and strives to become a hero in the Marvel NOW! relaunch The Superior Spider-Man.

Fans are outraged.  Death threats have been issued to Slott.  The authorities have been contacted.  Message boards are brimming with venomous rage about one of the most iconic heroes in comic book history being dispatched with such disrespect.  Mixing up the status quo is nothing new for Spider-Man.  And I have to wonder if people aren't getting worked up a little needlessly.  Okay, a LOT needlessly.  Before you rattle off an angry forum posting and your neighborhood comic forum, let's just remember a few things.

1. They already killed him once

In the Ultimate universe, they killed Peter Parker like a bitch.  Beat down at the hands of the Green Goblin in a street fight of all things.  I suppose since this was the "Ultimate Universe" it didn't count.

2. They've played fast and loose with the continuity forever

Spider-Man has been one of the most creatively molested characters in the history of the medium.  I could spend a couple of hours on the sad reality that comic books become choked by nostalgia.  These characters exist for decades and they don't age, they are rarely allowed to have long term relationships.  Emotionally castrated archtypes who are never allowed to mature.  Eventually the status quo gets mucked with over and over again until fans cry foul, and they fix the issue by hitting the rest button and starting over from scratch.

Go back to the 1990's for the clone saga, when it was revealed that Spider-Man had been a clone for years and was replaced by the 'original' Peter Parker.  Then that all went to hell and they pull an 180 faster than you can say 'Scarlett Spider'.

Just a few years back the internet raged over the "One More Day" storyline where Spider-Man makes a deal with the devil in order to save his Aunt's life.  Backlash ensued.

And now you have an even crazier story: Spider-Man gets mindjacked by Doctor Octopus and is killed. Fans will fume.  But if I'm being honest here, this is the first time in a long while that I've been interested in picking up a copy of Spider-Man.  And here's why...

1. When was the last time Peter Parker was interesting?

Spider-Man as a character has been taken through so many iterations over the years that it becomes difficult to invest in the character.  When I started reading comics, there was one Spider-Man book you had to follow.  Twelve issues a year.  Simple stories at a standard pace.  Not this modern era where there are a half dozen Spider titles telling overlapping stories and nothing really makes sense.  Spiderman goes to space.  Spider-Man is an Avenger.  Spider-Man is in the Fantastic Four.  Marvel has used Spider-Man so much that i no longer care about his comic book antics.  The truth is Spider-Man is no longer interesting because he's been manhandled by Marvel editorial for decades and overused to move units.

2. There's plenty of Peter Parker in other mediums

You got Spider-Man movies, Spider-Man TV shows, and a thousand old stories available in print and trade.  If you want Peter Parker, you have options.

3. Continuity is a noose

I feel sorry for any writer saddled with five decades of stories and given the task of trying to please anyone.  It's impossible.  There will always be a vocal minority who call any attempts to take the character in another direction as heresy.  The truth is, writing a popular comic book confines comes with smothering conditions that must stifle even the best writer.  Not that I'm calling Dan Slott a great writer, but I think fans need to get over the idea that their interpretation of the character and the canon are somehow the only way to tell the story.

4. F*** the Status Quo

I like my comic books to delve into mental territory from time to time (maybe that's why I'm a fan of Grant Morrison).  The idea of a supervillain taking over for Spider-Man interests me.

I understand the main complaint: one of the greatest comic book characters of all times died in a way unbecoming of a hero, But that brings us back to everyone's favorite creative tool...

5. The Reset Button

If it doesn't work, they're just going to push it and take it back to where it started from.  It's only a matter of time.

So while you are all bitching about The Superior Spider-Man, I'm going to read it and see if this ridiculous story is actually worth reading.

Now everybody take a deep breath.

First trailer for The Incredible Burt Wonderstone

New Line Cinema has released the first trailer for The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, a new comedy from director Don Scardino (30 Rock) and screenwriters John Francis Daley and Jonathan M Goldenstein (Horrible Bosses), which sees Steve Carell (The Office) and Steve Buscemi's (Boardwalk Empire) status as the kings of the Las Vegas magic scene coming under threat from a Criss Angel-like street performer played by Jim Carrey (Dumb and Dumber).

Take a look at the synopsis and check out the trailer below...

"Superstar magicians Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carell) and Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi) have ruled the Las Vegas strip for years, raking in millions with illusions as big as Burt’s growing ego. But lately the duo’s greatest deception is their public friendship, while secretly they’ve grown to loathe each other. Facing cutthroat competition from guerilla street magician Steve Gray (Jim Carrey), whose cult following surges with each outrageous stunt, even their show looks stale. But there’s still a chance Burt and Anton can save the act - both onstage and off - if Burt can get back in touch with what made him love magic in the first place."

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone also stars Olivia Wilde (Tron: Legacy), Alan Arkin (Argo), James Gandolfini (The Sopranos) and Gillian Jacobs (Community), and is set for a North American release on March 15th, 2013. A UK date is yet to be announced.

Second Opinion - Jack Reacher (2012)

Jack Reacher, 2012.

Directed by Christopher McQuarrie.
Starring Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, David Oyelowo, Werner Herzog and Jai Courtney.

SYNOPSIS:

When a military sniper kills five victims, homicide investigator Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) is brought in to crack the case.

I can't really think of a Tom Cruise film that I have disliked. There's still a few on his list which I haven't seen - Knight and Day, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, but other than that I can't think of a film of his I didn't enjoy in some capacity. Until this.

Not that it started that way. At first the jokes are funny and some of Tom Cruise's wit and dry humour as Reacher does work, but unfortunately it soon dissipated and became painful at times.

The plot starts out really intriguingly and I was expecting a great detective story, but as it unfolds the plot gets weaker and weaker, and weaker. The action the film so heavily relies on is never filled with any tension nor is it ever exciting as a result; in fact, it's to the films detriment that Cruise was cast in the role as certain scenes seemed tailored - i.e. shortened and not enthralling - to make Cruise's stature appear that much larger. The final fight is extremely short and Cruise's lack of frame really shows against Jai Courtney's imposing figure.

Then there is the acting; Rosamund Pike as defending lawyer Helen, Vladimir Sizov as the big bad, Vlad, and David Oyelowo as Detective Emerson all put in brutally painful performances. I cannot stress enough how much the acting reaches woeful levels in this film at times - a lot of times. They're not helped by the dialogue they are given though, which at times was pitiful; Jack Reacher's meant to be this really smart, imposing, sexy guy, WE GET IT! Cruise himself doesn't put in a bad performance, he just wasn't right for this role and I didn't buy him as the character once. I've never been anywhere near the books so please don't think this is some longing for the movies to be like the books - it isn't, it's just that Cruise was not suited to this role and should never have been anywhere near it.

There are a couple of moments in the film which really take you out of the story, one you've already seen in the trailer so I don't consider this a spoiler... at one point Reacher is being chased by the police and is pursued by several police cars and a helicopter. In order to evade he gets out of the car - leaves it rolling forward - and hides among a crowd huddled at a bus stop who actually protect him from the gaze of the passing police. Let me remind you that the set up for the film is that 5 random people were gunned down in public by a shooter, and yet when the public see a man being chased excessively by the police they protect that person. They protect him! Imagine if that happened on an average day in London - I don't think anyone would be lending that person their baseball cap to hide their face. Then there is a scene where Reacher is attacked in a bathroom which plays out like a skit from Laurel & Hardy or The Three Stooges. It's laughable.

There are too many moments in Jack Reacher which detract from what at times tries to be a serious film, and unfortunately the acting and the dialogue means the film soon descends into a pit of despair and boredom.

The absolutely, positively final trailer for Django Unchained

Back at the end of November, The Weinstein Company released a 'final trailer' for Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, but with the Spaghetti Western homage now just a couple of days away from its Christmas release in North America, Yahoo! Movies has found the time to sneak in one last preview, which in all honesty must be about the seventh or eighth trailer we've seen for the film. Nevertheless, this one features a few snippets of new footage as Christoph Waltz's (Inglourious Basterds) Dr. King Shultz trains Jamie Foxx's (Ray) Django in the art of bounty hunting, all accompanied to the John Legend track 'Who Did That To You?'

Set in a pre-Civil War South, Django Unchained sees Django and Dr. King Schultz setting out to take down a group of outlaws before turning their attention to Leonardo DiCaprio's (Inception) evil plantation owner Calvin Candie, who is holding Django's wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington; Fantastic Four). Also featuring in the cast are Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction), Jonah Hill (21 Jump Street), James Russo (Public Enemies), Don Johnson (Machete), James Remar (Dexter), M.C. Gainey (Lost), RZA (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), Walton Goggins (The Shield), Tom Savini (Planet Terror) and Anthony LaPaglia (Without a Trace).

Django Unchained opens on Christmas Day in North America and will arrive in the UK on January 18th, 2013.

The Week in Spandex - Iron Man 3, The Avengers 2, Justice League, X-Men, Spider-Man, S.H.I.E.L.D., Arrow and more

Our weekly round up of the latest news stories from the world of screen superheroes, including Iron Man 3, The Avengers 2, Guardians of the Galaxy, S.H.I.E.L.D., Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Wolverine, X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Luke Cage: Hero for Hire, Justice League, Suicide Squad, The Dark Knight Rises, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Young Justice: Invasion, Ultimate Spider-Man, Arrow and more...

As we come to the penultimate Week in Spandex of 2012, we'll get things underway with the first of 2013's FIVE big superhero movies - Iron Man 3. Along with the arrival of a new still showing a battered and bloodied Tony Stark, actor Robert Downey Jr. has taken a few moments to discuss his admiration for director Shane Black (who has replaced Iron Man and Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau at the helm of the forthcoming sequel), as well as his hopes for the first instalment of 'Phase Two' of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: "I adore him. I’ve been a fan of Shane Black since I saw Lethal Weapon. When we were doing the first Iron Man, Jon Favreau and I used to call up Shane Black. We had two lifeline calls; one was to J.J. Abrams, which was about the third act. And for the other call, we went to Shane’s house. We couldn’t afford him, so in exchange for helping us with a few key scenes, he asked for a piece of Salmon and fresh blueberries… in the Iron Man scene where Tony Stark comes back from captivity and calls a press conference, and then asked everybody to sit down, the speech Stark gives all came from Shane Black. So to get him to do Iron Man 3, it has just been this awesome experience and one of my favourite working experiences... Iron Man 3 is going to be a very, very bold genre film, from the storytelling..."

...In other Iron Man 3 news, rapper / actor T.I. (American Gangster) has revealed that he was being lined up for a role in the sequel: "I was being considered for this one film. Now that it's over with, I can say it. Iron Man 3. I was being considered for Iron Man 3, and it wasn't to be Iron Man, it was to be another character in the film." Gee, you don't say... although saying that, Robert Downey Jr.'s Marvel contract is up this coming year...

...Regardless of Downey Jr.'s current contractual status, it would take a brave man to bet against the actor lining up with the rest of Earth's Mightiest Heroes when The Avengers 2 arrives on screen in 2015, although Tom Hiddleston isn't so sure Loki that will be back for round two after another the villain enjoys another starring role in next year's Thor: The Dark World, telling SuperHeroHype: "I don't know [if Loki will appear], and that really is the honest answer. I suspect not, only because I think that probably the audiences are tired of Loki being the bad guy. Maybe the Avengers need somebody else to fight. But I'd love to be part of it again..."

...Judging by comments this week from Joss Whedon at a DGA screening of The Avengers, a new villain isn't likely to be the only addition to the cast of the 2015 sequel, with the writer-director hinting that the roster of Earth's Mightiest Heroes is set for a shake-up in The Avengers 2: "I used to read The Avengers and part of the ethos of the team was that it changed their lineup every month. Their 150th issue was just a bunch of faces. 'Who will be in the team now?!' We had the first issue as a poster in the offices. Now that I'm working on the sequel I said, 'Let's get the second issue up there! Let's change it up a little bit!' The second issue is 'Introducing… Giant-Man! And this character!' They were already changing it up after one issue. That's what they always do..."

...Sticking with The Avengers for a moment, and concept artist Andy Park has released a tonne of his designs for this summer's mega-blockbuster, including illustrations of Loki, Iron Man, Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Captain America (Chris Evans), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), The Other and Thanos, as well as the film's major fight scenes and climactic battle against the Chitauri...

...According to Variety, Marvel Studios has narrowed its search for the role of Peter Quill / Star-Lord in James Gunn's (Super) 'big space epic' Guardians of the Galaxy, with Jim Sturgess (Cloud Atlas) and Zachary Levi (Chuck) said to be favourites of the studio, despite the fact that Levi is already set to appear as Fandral in next year's Thor: The Dark World. The report also goes on to state that an "unnamed third actor may be tested after the holidays," which is about as good a get-out clause as I've ever seen. Other actors thought to have tested for Star-Lord include Joel Edgerton (Zero Dark Thirty), Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), Lee Pace (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) and Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables)...

...The regular cast of Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. has found its sixth and final recruit with Chloe Bennet (Nashville) joining the upcoming TV pilot in the role of Skye, who is described as "a confident woman who is slightly obsessed with superhero culture and the shadow organisations that exist within it." Bennet will appear alongside Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson, Ming-Na Wen (Stargate Universe) as Agent Melinda May, Elizabeth Henstridge (The Thompsons) as Agent Gemma Simmons, Iain De Caestecker (Coronation Street) as Agent Leo Fitz and Brett Dalton (Killing Lincoln) as Agent Grant Ward. Meanwhile Samuel L. Jackson has revealed that he's yet to speak to Joss Whedon about Nick Fury making an appearance in the pilot, although he did tell fans to expect the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. to feature heavily in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier: "It's a full-on role, from the original script that I read. It's a full on S.H.I.E.L.D. operation in Captain America. But I don't know - I'm meeting with [directors Anthony and Joe Russo] this week to see what happens..."

...From one Marvel Universe to another now and Fox's Marvel creative consultant Mark Millar (Kick-Ass) has been active on his Millarworld forums once again, hinting that the studio intends to increase its upcoming superhero slate by revealing in a Christmas message that "working with James Mangold (The Wolverine), Josh Trank (Fantastic Four) and Bryan Singer (X-Men: Days of Future Past) is very exciting, but we're already making plans for 2014 and beyond and there's two further director's we've been having discussions with in recent weeks too..."

...One person keen to get further involved with Fox's Marvel universe is Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher), who penned the first draft for the upcoming X-Men solo sequel The Wolverine back when Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler) was attached to direct, telling Screen Rant: "Bryan [Singer] and I have talked about it a bunch of times – and in fact, right after I got back from shooting [Jack Reacher] I had a meeting with Tom Rothman – just a general meeting – and I said to Tom, ‘You know what I’d really love to do, is I’d really love to flesh out the X-Men Universe for you. You have this great wealth of these Marvel characters, and the X-Men franchise has only focused on a small handful of them – there’s many more... And I thought that it’d be really cool to create a ‘bible’ – you know, a series of outlines of interlocking movies where you could do kind of what they did with The Avengers, where you’re creating multiple movies that could come together as one movie here and there. And… you know… I never heard back [laughs]. But that would kinda be fun – to do something like that – where you could kind of become the curator for something like that..."

...In another interview with Screen Rant, McQuarrie also touched upon his first draft for The Wolverine, which has subsequently been reworked by Mark Bomback (Die Hard 4.0) and Scott Frank (Minority Report) following the appointment of director James Mangold (Knight and Day): "The truth of the matter is that Wolverine I consider to be one of my favorite scripts that I’ve ever written. I really held it near and dear to my heart, and I was sorry that circumstances worked out that I couldn’t be there and be involved in that movie. I’m almost afraid to see what it’s evolved into, because that’s the nature of the process... it was an X-Men movie – it was a Marvel movie – but it existed very much in a real world. And more than anything, I love it for the very fact that – at least in the script I wrote – he was the only mutant in the movie… It was what you’d imagine the Wolverine universe to be under the control of somebody who wrote The Usual Suspects and The Way of the Gun and is a fan of Sergio Leone. It was [Akira] Kurosawa’s Wolverine. There was a real romance to it, there was real humor to it, and a very straightforward sort of plain-faced brutality to it. I’m hoping they preserve that..."

...Hugh Jackman will make his sixth appearance as the razor-clawed mutant when The Wolverine arrives in cinemas this coming July, but the actor has already lined up his seventh outing, with Bryan Singer officially confirming that Jackman has signed on to feature in the 2014's sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past, as well as teasing that there's "more to come". So far, X-Men: First Class' James McAvoy (Wanted), Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games), Michael Fassbender (Prometheus) and Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodies) are confirmed to appear alongside original X-Men trilogy stars Ian McKellen (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) and Patrick Stewart (Star Trek: The Next Generation), with recent rumours suggesting that James Marsden (Robot & Frank) and Halle Berry (Catwoman) are also on Singer's radar to reprise the roles of Cyclops and Storm...

...Last week VFX company Amalgamated Dynamics Inc. posted a video featuring concept designs for X-Men Origins: Wolverine's hideous interpretation of Deadpool, and now the company has posted another video, this time focussing on the design of the make-up effects used to bring the Blob (Kevin Durand) to life; take a look here...

...Before we finish up with the X-Men universe, it's not often we post fan-made stuff in The Week in Spandex, but a new video from filmmaker Kyle Roberts is certainly worthy of a mention. In celebration of the 20th anniversary of X-Men: The Animated Series (wow, that makes me feel old), Kyle and the team at Reckless Abandonment Pictures have put together a fantastic animated stop motion version of the cartoon's opening title sequence, which you can check out right here...

...Now that Jamie Foxx has been confirmed as joining Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Sally Field, Martin Sheen, Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) and Dane DeHaan (Chronicle) in the cast of Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the Django Unchained star has spoken about what we can expect from his take on Electro: "[The costume] won’t be green and yellow. It will be a different colour. [The producers] want something for the future. They want to have it more grounded and not as comic bookie, so it won’t be green and yellow. They want to try new things, like liquid rubber and things like that, and there are all these bolts and stuff in my arms when they are hanging me upside down and trying to figure out what happen. How did he become this way? So, it will be some new stuff... Marc Webb and all those guys who are doing it are smart... they know that it has to make sense in 2013 so the suit is really slick. It's not green. It's actually black... You'll see that in his whole life, no one is talking to him. People have stolen his ideas at the big company. He's a nobody. At a certain point, Spider-Man bumps into him and says, 'You're my guy. You're my eyes and ears on the street'. And he says his name — no one has ever said [Max] Dillon's name. He goes, 'Wow' and, when Spider-Man leaves, he sort of thinks that, 'I am Spider-Man's partner!' He's cutting out Spider-Man's face and pasting it on all his boards... Everything goes bad with his mom. She doesn't remember his birthday. He has something tragic happen and, when it turns on, he lights it up..."

...While we're on the subject of Jamie Foxx, Django Unchained director Quentin Tarantino has revealed that he had plans to bring Marvel's Luke Cage to the big screen following his 1992 debut Reservoir Dogs: "After Reservoir Dogs, I had considered doing a Luke Cage: Hero for Hire movie. [Producer] Ed Pressman owned the rights at that time and we talked about it. I talked to Larry Fish [Laurence Fishburne] about being Luke Cage, and he really liked that idea. Then I ended up writing Pulp Fiction... My feeling [now] is if I wanted to do something like that, I'd want to create the superhero myself..."

...Moving on to Warner Bros.' fledgling DC movie universe and Ben Affleck has addressed the rumours about him being offered the director's chair on the studio's proposed Justice League movie: "I just want to make it clear because it’s not like I had something to even pass on. Because someone will eventually do Justice League and they'll go, like, 'Ben Affleck passed on it,' and it won't be true. I don’t think there’s anything. I think there’s a DC Avengers that could be done because they have the characters for it, and there’s some stuff in the comics now that’s kind of interesting, and it’s cool..."

...While Warner Bros. are keen to replicate the success of Marvel's superhero team-up with Justice League (and, to a lesser extent, the rumoured Justice League Dark adaptation Heaven Sent from Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro), DC fans hoping to see the long-rumoured Suicide Squad adaptation look set to have a wait on their hands, with producer Dan Lin (Gangster Squad, Godzilla) providing a rather discouraging update earlier this week: "[Suicide Squad] has a script from Justin Marks [Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li], but it's on hold right now. I think Warner Bros. wants to finish their A-list stories first and then we'll talk about stories like Suicide Squad..."

...Speaking to The Dark Knight Rises UK Facebook page, actor Michael Caine has revealed his own take on the backstory for Alfred Pennyworth in Christopher Nolan's acclaimed Dark Knight saga: "I play the butler, so you haven’t got some great backstory for the blooming butler, but I invented a backstory. Bruce’s father went to the S.A.S. headquarters in Herefordshire to see an officer friend. He was in the officer’s mess and there was a sergeant there who had been badly wounded and couldn’t go back to the war, and he didn’t want to go into Civvy Street, so he took charge of the sergeant’s mess, and that’s me. So what that is is you have this very tough ex-S.A.S. guy who knows all about drinks and service and getting sandwiches and coffee, because he had to learn it for the sergeants mess. … So I told Chris that story and he said, oh it’s brilliant...."

...Now that the Caped Crusader's big screen adventures are on hiatus following the release of The Dark Knight Rises, Batman fans will need to get their fix from Warner Bros.' animated output. Fortunately, along with the new CG animated series Beware the Batman, 2013 will also see the arrival of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2, which arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on January 29th; check out a full rundown of all the special features, as well as two new images...

...Meanwhile, DC animation fans also have the return of Cartoon Network's 'DC Nation' programming block to look forward to on January 5th, and The World's Finest has posted three teaser videos which showcase the upcoming episodes of Young Justice: Invasion and Green Lantern: The Animated Series, along with a sneak peek at the additional bonus material set to air during the block...

...January also sees the premiere of Ultimate Spider-Man season two over on Disney XD's Marvel Universe programming block, which will see Spidey teaming up with the stars of the new animated series Marvel's Avengers Assemble to take on the team of the Sinister Six, which is comprised of Rhino, The Lizard, Electro, Kraven the Hunter and The Beetle, along with an as-yet-unrevealed sixth member. IGN posted a first-look image of The Lizard, while you can also check out a shot of Electro over at ComicBookMovie. If you're not a fan of Ultimate Spider-Man's visual style, I doubt these designs will do much to change your mind...

...James Callis (Battlestar Galactica) has secured a guest-starring role on the CW's Arrow, where he will play Dodger, an international jewel thief who heads to Starling City to steal a valuable ruby, which naturally puts him on the radar of Stephen Amell's Emerald Archer. Arrow is currently on its midseason break and is set to resume on January 16th with the tenth episode 'Burned', which sees the introduction of Garfield Lynns - a.k.a. Firefly - who will be portrayed by Andrew Dunbar (SGU Stargate Universe), and you can watch an extended promo for the new episode here...

Evil Eye Pictures contributes to Cirque Du Soleil: Worlds Away 3D

The cinematic talent responsible for bringing Shrek (2001) and Avatar (2009) to the big screen have decided to collaborate with a fully integrated movie studio/production company and a group of performers known for a dramatic mix of circus arts and street entertainment.  Written and directed by Andrew Adamson, executive produced by James Cameron, and partnered by Reel FX and Cirque Du Soleil, Cirque Du Soleil: Worlds Away 3D arrives in select theatres starting on December 21, 2012.

Tasked by Reel FX to design and produce the sand vortex which transports the main characters into the Cirque universe in 3D was Evil Eye Pictures. "The vortex effect required complex creative design and the simulation of millions and millions of animated sand particles," explained John L. Jack, Evil Eye’s Visual Effects Producer in press release issued by the San Francisco based VFX company.  A number of exterior shots had to be produced to interweave the love story which takes place in previous Cirque du Soleil shows such as O, KA, Mystere, Viva Elvis, Zumanity and The Beatles Love. "Evil Eye's expansive environments establish a grand scale and mystical presence for key exterior scenes in the film," noted Ed Jones, Executive Producer for Cirque Du Soleil: Worlds Away 3D.  "Those moments simply would not have been possible without their efforts."

"We are honoured to be a part of this holiday season’s most original film," stated Evil Eye Visual Effects Supervisor Matt McDonald, who supervised principal photography in Las Vegas and New Zealand, and also oversaw Evil Eye's VFX work throughout the post-production. "We enjoyed both the creativity and technical aspects of our participation, all in service of this true cinematic spectacle."

The Walking Dead renewed for a fourth season, Glen Mazzara out as showrunner

AMC has announced that its hit zombie series The Walking Dead has been renewed for a fourth season - which won't come as much of a surprise to anyone, considering its recent midseason finale drew a whopping 15.2 million viewers - but the big shock is that the show will also need to find its third showrunner, with Glen Mazzara joining his predecessor Frank Darabont in vacating the position due to 'creative differences'.

"AMC announces the season four pick-up of The Walking Dead. AMC also jointly announces with Glen Mazzara that for future seasons, the two parties have mutually decided to part ways," said an official statement released yesterday. "Glen guided the series creatively for seasons 2 and 3. AMC is grateful for his hard work. We are both proud of our shared success. Both parties acknowledge that there is a difference of opinion about where the show should go moving forward, and conclude that it is best to part ways. This decision is amicable and Glen will remain on for post-production on [the remainder of the third season] as showrunner and executive producer."

"My time as showrunner on The Walking Dead has been an amazing experience, but after I finish season 3, it’s time to move on," said Mazzara, who came on board the show after Frank Darabont's unceremonious exit during the production of season two. "I have told the stories I wanted to tell and connected with our fans on a level that I never imagined. It doesn’t get much better than that. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey."

The Walking Dead season three is set to resume airing once more in February, while season four will presumably get underway in the fall.

Benedict Cumberbatch discusses his Star Trek Into Darkness villain

The major talking point throughout the entire production of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek sequel has been the identity of Benedict Cumberbatch's (Sherlock) mysterious villain, and despite the fact that Paramount Pictures has let slip his name - 'John Harrison', a likely decoy - we still know next to nothing about the bad guy who's set to take the crew of the USS Enterprise 'Into Darkness'. Well, during a Japanese Star Trek Into Darkness press event, Cumberbatch discussed his role in the upcoming sequel with GyaO! (via TrekMovie), and while he wasn't giving much away, he did give us an idea of Abrams' inspirations for the 'Harrison', as well as an insight into the character's motives.

"JJ described the role in movie terms as a mixture of Hannibal Lector, Jack in The Shining and The Joker in Batman. There are sorts of levels to pitch in amongst quite a high bar as well to succeed in comparison to. It was a framework to understand this character before I saw the whole script... I would say he is three dimensional in a way that he has a purpose, unlike the villains can sometimes go in franchises where it is just the obstacle – just this immovable thing this entity in the way or destroying what the good guys do. This person has real purpose behind his actions – his intention. It doesn’t mean I condone them, but I can empathize with the reasons. So there is a degree of leaning in and understanding and caring about him as well as being terrified about what he is doing."

Star Trek Into Darkness is set to arrive in cinemas on May 17th, 2013, with a cast that includes Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Bruce Greenwood, Alice Eve, Peter Weller, Nazneen Contractor, Noel Clark and Nolan North.

Die Hard - The Greatest Christmas Movie of All Time

Martin Deer on why Die Hard is the greatest Christmas movie of all time...

Christmas. That wonderful time of year when we receive gifts, the hero loses to the evil villain and we realise just how much we hate our family and lose faith in ourselves and fellow man.  Wait, no, that's wrong. Christmas is about the opposite of those things, and Christmas movies are there to tell wonderful festive tales which affirm these values.  There are many Christmas films, but only one deserves to be classed as THE Christmas film, the Rudolph of the pack - Die Hard!

"Die Hard you say?  This is madness dear boy, blasphemy!  It's about terrorists and is just another action movie, it has nothing to do with Christmas."  Wrong, wrong and wrong my dear readers, oh so wrong. Die Hard is as Christmas as you can get.

So what sets Die Hard apart from the likes of Scrooge, It's a Wonderful Life and all those other classics?  Well, I'll tell you...

Villainy

Every good Christmas movie needs a character who goes against the good spirited Christmas values. The Grinch, Scrooge, The Wet Bandits, Stripe from Gremlins - they're all great villains yes, and serve as excellent foils to our heroes, but actually they're just not that evil are they? The Grinch and Scrooge end up becoming good people, Baldy and Curly have their plans foiled by a sweet and innocent Macaulay Culkin, TWICE, and Stripe is destroyed by Sunlight.  Not to mention if you don't get a Gremlin wet or feed him after midnight (seriously how hard is that?) you never end up with those evil little buggers to begin with.  Whereas Die Hard has Hans Gruber, a German terrorist with a slick European accent and a penchant for death.  He's happy to ruin everyone's Christmas when he plans on stealing from the good people of Nakatomi, having the FBI shut down the power to millions of homes and killing a few people.  He's evil, people, evil, and your hate for this guy makes you root for the hero unlike any other Christmas film out there.  And that's not even mentioning slimy journalist Richard Thornburg.

Selflessness

Christmas is all about giving. Whether this be in the form of presents or your time, it's all about putting a smile on someone's face as you put them before yourself.  Happiness is the reward for selflessness.  Many Christmas films have characters that do this, however, Die Hard gives us a protagonist who literally puts his life on the line for others - hundreds of others.  In fact he puts his body on the front line to protect the lives of others and save the day.  He gets shot at, has his feet cut up by glass and almost loses his wife. He acts selflessly when he could have sat back, thought of himself and waited in safety out of harm's way and left it up to the authorities to act, but he does the right thing and he is rewarded for this at the end.  Our antagonists are also rewarded however for their acts of theft, murder and selfishness. Hans gets dropped from a skyscraper to certain death and Thornburg gets socked in the face by Mrs McClane on national TV.  Great work Santa.

Family Values

Is Die Hard a film about terrorists and a man willing to fight back for what's right amid explosions and gunfire, or is it about a man who just wants to get back with his woman, make up for his wrongdoings to her and be together with their kids on Christmas?  Well, we've just established that John McClane takes action to do the right thing and so clearly it is the latter. Die Hard is about the importance of family and admitting you were wrong and saying; "I'm sorry".  It's just a coincidence that he drops C4 down an elevator shaft, jumps off a skyscraper as all hell erupts behind him and pops some guy straight between the eyes.  Just a very happy, awesome coincidence.

Faith

Believing in yourself and others is something we all must do in life. We get nowhere by being cynical and untrusting.  Throughout the course of Die Hard, John strikes up a friendship with someone he's never met before. The guy on the other end of the phone has absolutely no reason to believe him but decides to trust him on faith and instinct alone, which works out well for everyone involved doesn't it?  Then there's the fact that our second hero, Al the Cop, has had a crisis of faith recently when during the course of his job he made a mistake - a mistake that he blames himself for too much - and is unable to fire his weapon as a result, and thus be an effective police officer.  That is until, through his friendship with John, he is able to become more confident and finally has a moment to redeem himself and his confidence whilst saving the hero by taking down some crazy son of a bitch with 3 slugs to the chest.  Was it 3?  Oh who cares, you go, Al!

So there you have it, the next time anyone tells you Die Hard isn't the best Christmas film - or even a Christmas film at all if they are that crazy - throw this article at them whilst yelling "Yippie kayay"

Merry Christmas, you filthy animals.  Wait, wrong franchise.
