Chevy Chase leaves Community

$

0
Deadline has revealed that Chevy Chase has parted ways with NBC's cult comedy series Community by mutual consent, bringing to an end a difficult three-and-a-half year collaboration that saw the actor clashing with the show's producers on numerous occasions. Chase, who portrays the character of Pierce Hawthorne, will leave the show immediately, having already completed the bulk of filming for the fourth season.

Considering the recent history between Chase and the show's producers (not to mention his notoriously difficult behaviour), the actor's departure comes as little surprise. Last year, he was involved in a public spat with Community creator and former showrunner Dan Harmon, while he also threatened to leave the show following the conclusion of season three. Chase has panned the show on multiple occasions recently and just last month he was said to have dropped the N-word during the latest in an ongoing series of on set tirades.

After a career nosedive in the 90s that saw him appearing in trash like Cops and Robbersons, Man of the House and Snow Day, Chase had all but disappeared before securing a comeback of sorts with Community in 2009. However, his only big screen role of note since has been an extended cameo in 2010's Hot Tub Time Machine, and it's likely that his departure from Community prove the final nail in the career coffin of the once-great funnyman.

Movie Review - Lawrence of Arabia (50th Anniversary 4K Restoration) (1962)

Lawrence of Arabia, 1962.

Directed by David Lean.
Starring Peter O'Toole, Alec Guinness, Anthony Quinn, Jack Hawkins and Omar Sharif.

SYNOPSIS:

T.E. Lawrence attempts to unite the hostile Arab factions during the First World War in order to lead them to victory over the ruling Turkish Empire.

There are many films which are great. There are some which are outstanding. There are a few which are close to cinematic perfection. Above all these, there is Lawrence of Arabia.

Seeing David Lean’s masterpiece on the big screen defines why cinema is the art form it is and what can be achieved when every aspect that goes into making a film is functioning at its optimum level. The re-mastered version, released in a new 4K digital transfer in cinemas to commemorate the film’s 50th anniversary, runs for 227 minutes yet there is not a wasted scene, shot, or line of dialogue. Everything David Lean puts into the film is relevant and necessary; the film is never side tracked by needless subplots or scenes tacked on to please a particular demographic. Watching this in an age when so many films cannot hold the attention for 90 minutes, Lawrence of Arabia is a reminder of why we go to the cinema; it is the hope to see something nearing perfection in the art form we love. This is that perfection we look for. This is one of cinema’s greatest achievements.

Watching Lawrence of Arabia at the cinema in 2012 gives us a belief that cinema is not dead and that the studios still care to show films like this in their complete form, even if it is a digital transfer; one can only imagine today what a 70mm print would have looked like.  The sheer scope and grandeur of the film is tear-inducing beautiful to think this was made without CGI or computer animated storyboards or any green screen trickery; everything Lean shows is real and the very thought of that is jaw-dropping (literally so). That orange sun is rising before our eyes; that landscape is really that vast; those planes are really filling the screen; those dozens of horses and camels are really charging on that city.  Steven Spielberg, who is still very much influenced by David Lean, said if the film were made today it would cost $285 million to recreate without the use of digital effects. What he forgot to mention is that it would still need David Lean behind the camera to make it anywhere near as good. When watching the film with this in mind, it may be the greatest achievement in directing ever seen.

It may be a cliché to say, but the famous scene where Omar Sharif makes his entrance from a speck on the horizon to the foreground of the screen is the ultimate cinematic experience the likes of which this reviewer fears we will never see again. No music, very little dialogue, and a tension which rapidly builds from nowhere. It must be seen to be believed. Add to that the sight of Peter O’Toole and his shadow running and parading on the top of a train; the edit from the match being blown out to the full screen sunrise; the immortal line “Nothing is written” and very nearly every other scene and line in the film, and Lawrence of Arabia must be regarded as flawless. There is no evidence on screen to suggest anything else.

No star rating or marks out of ten can do justice to just how magnificent the film is. The greatest reward you can do as a film lover is to see Lawrence of Arabia at the cinema if it ever gets shown again, and there is little doubt that it will be treated to a future rerelease. It is timeless and with the sorry state of modern cinema, time shall only serve to make it better.

Turning The Page: Nexus by Ramez Naam

Can you image a world were a drug can be modified to turn the brains of its users into a wireless communication network? It is as if telepathic powers have been computer engineered by Microsoft or Apple. But the mental enhancer does not stop there as additional instructor software programs can be incorporated so to guide a socially awkward nerd into becoming a smooth Casanova. Welcome to the next phase of biotechnology known as Nexus.

Like with any technology there are rebels like the hacker group Anonymous which enjoy using it to defy the establishment. Kaden Lane is one of those individuals who live on the social fringe whose obsession and proficiency in pushing scientific boundaries has captured the attention of the Emerging Risks Directorate of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Lane is introduced to readers as he is testing a software program which turns his mind into a computer screen allowing menu options as well as audio instructions on how to seduce women at a party. All goes well until the system gets overloaded at a crucial moment resulting in the operator figuratively and literally misfiring. The comedic episode transitions into one with dark overtones when an undercover agent who has taken the enhanced drug is exposed and is physically paralyzed via mind control. The party is over for Lane and his gang as he is coerced into assisting the American government to neutralize the threat of superhuman soldiers being manufactured by the Chinese.

The format and style of Nexus resembles the approach adopted by Daniel H. Wilson for Robopocalypse and AMPEDwhere documentation such as interview transcripts and dictionary definitions are interspersed between the chapters so to provide a social and political context.  Also like Wilson, author Ramez Naam comes from a scientific background which has resulted in him be involved with the creation of Microsoft Explorer and Outlook; consequently, there is a sense of authenticity with the manner of which the technology is portrayed.  Naam has a visual style with his words which leads to one experiencing cinematic scenes rather than being swamped with textbook exposition.   An interesting the scene occurs on the plane where the captured Kaden Lane uses a “mental keyboard” to talk to his fellow captives without being detected.  The sequence when covert operative Samantha Cataranes experiences the mind-meld with the other Nexus users has an epic feel though I have to admit imagining “the soaring towers of the delicate crystal and steel Temple of Self” seems to be a rather daunting task!

Published by Angry Robot Books, the ebook version of Nexus will arrive on December 18, 2012 as well as the print version in the U.S while the UK will have to wait until January 3, 2013 for the hard copy.

First footage of a Jaeger from Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim?

$

There's been a huge amount of secrecy over filmmaker Guillermo del Toro's (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth) upcoming kaiju homage Pacific Rim, and while we know from the official synopsis that the film will see its human cast piloting massive robots known as Jaegers against a relentless force of giant monsters, that's pretty much it so far.

Well, thanks to a new promotional video for del Toro's VFX production company Mirada, we may have had our first look some (presumably unfinished or pre-viz) footage from the hotly-anticipated summer 2013 release. The promo offers up a brief glimpse of what could be one of the aforementioned Jaegers, with a giant robot popping up around the 1.15 mark to fire off a missile from a launcher on its arm.

Kind of reminds me of G1 Shockwave. Only grey. At the very least, it's a much better design than Michael Bay gave us in Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Check it out here...

Update - Well, it looks like the giant robot has nothing to do with Pacific Rim's giant robots, with Guillermo del Toro confirming that the clip is entirely unrelated to the upcoming film. So, I guess we've still got a few weeks to wait before we finally get to see some footage with the release of the first trailer...

Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Idris Elba (Prometheus), Rinko Kikuchi (The Brothers Bloom), Charlie Day (Horrible Bosses) and Ron Perlman (Hellboy) and is set to hit cinemas on July 12th, 2013.

Machete producers looking to block the release of Machete Kills

Overnight Productions, the producers of Robert Rodriguez's 2010 Grindhouse spin-off Machete, has filed a $2 million lawsuit against Rodriguez's Quick Draw Productions that could ultimately block the release of the upcoming sequel Machete Kills. According to Deadline, "Overnight claims that... they were not provided with Texas tax credit information as required under the agreement with Rodriguez's company [and] defendants have also failed and refused to provide the required budget information to Overnight Productions so that it can determine the producer fee owed with respect to the sequel."

Filming is already complete on the sequel, which was picked up for distribution by Open Road Films just last month and sees Danny Trejo returning as the hard-as-nails former Mexican Federale in order to stop an arms dealer from launching a deadly weapon into space. Jessica Alba (Sin City) and Michelle Rodriguez (The Fast and the Furious) also reprise their roles from the original, while other cast members include Sofía Vergara (Modern Family), Amber Heard (Zombieland), Antonio Banderas (Desperado), Alexa Vega (Spy Kids), Vanessa Hudgens (Sucker Punch), Demián Bichir (A Better Life), William Sadler (The Green Mile), Cuba Gooding Jr (Jerry Maguire), Charlie Sheen (Anger Management) and Mel Gibson (Braveheart), along with pop sensation Lady Gaga in her acting debut.

Machete Kills is expected to arrive in cinemas some time in Spring 2013, and with both parties likely to see a decent financial return on the sequel, look for these legal troubles to be resolved pretty quickly.

Judd Apatow to write Simpsons episode

Well, in a way, he already has...

Pre-Anchorman, pre-The 40-Year-Old Virgin, pre-Knocked Up, director and producer extraordinaire Judd Apatow was just a regular schmo looking for a break. And one of his first projects was a Simpsons script 22 years ago.

The story involved Homer being hypnotised to believe he is his son's age, where he then becomes Bart's best friend. An adult man struggling with maturity? Yep, that's Apatow alright.

The current Simpson scribes have uncovered this long lost script (presumably in a dusty warehouse full of tie-in chess sets, lunchboxes and bubble bath bottles) and will now adapt it into a real life (well, 2D cartoon) episode next year.

He broke the news on Conan O'Brien's internet show (watch the full episode below):

And, because we're so good to you, here's the trailer for his upcoming movie, This Is 40 (Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann), which is a sequel-of-sorts to Knocked Up:

Read on for details of how to enter the giveaway…

David and Paige Walling (Hugh Laurie, Catherine Keener) and Terry and Cathy Ostroff (Oliver Platt, Allison Janney) are best friends and neighbors living on Orange Drive in suburban New Jersey. Their comfortable existence goes awry when prodigal daughter Nina Ostroff (Leighton Meester), newly broken up with her fiancé Ethan (Sam Rosen), returns home for Thanksgiving after a five-year absence. Rather than developing an interest in the successful son of her neighbors, Toby Walling (Adam Brody), which would please both families, it’s her parents' best friend David who captures Nina’s attention.

When the connection between Nina and David becomes undeniable, everyone’s lives are thrown into upheaval, particularly Vanessa Walling’s (Alia Shawkat), Nina's childhood best friend. It’s not long before the ramifications of the affair begin to work on all of the family members in unexpected and hilarious ways, leading everyone to reawaken to their lives, reassess what it means to be happy, and realize that sometimes what looks like a disaster turns out to be the thing we need.

Skyfall: A YouTube Reaction

Here at Flickering Myth, we like to occasionally gather our collective minds and discuss a recent piece of news, a trailer or a film. While we may appear like a hulking, unstoppable, single organism, Flickering Myth is actually (industry secret) a hive of writers of differing tastes, backgrounds and opinions. That's why we always make sure the big releases get a 'Second Opinion' review. A while ago, we reacted to the Skyfall trailer.

http://smhttp.14409.nexcesscdn.net/806D5E/wordpress-L/images/skyfall.png
Touching the neck is a sign of deep insecurity.

But there's another resource on the web out there, a fantastic compendium of top-level critics and viewers from all over the world - the YouTube comments section. Below are some of the choice reactions to that latest Bond, Skyfall...

We kick things off with Fubu, presumably a Samoan professional wrestler yet to make the big time. He/She/It simply asks:
Where's Pierce Brosnan?

It's a valid question. Where, exactly, is Pierce Brosnan? His official website (an exemplary piece of online graphic design) offers a few clues, but no certainties. He could, as the 'activist' tab of the site proclaims, be dedicating his time to "a passionate leadership role in environmental issues...[sic] in addition to his stellar film and television career". Or he may have returned to art, where he was trained, and has continued to paint "numerous landscapes as well as colorful portraits of his family". Poly-possibilities for a modern day polymath.

We can all agree on one thing, however - [SPOILER] - ...he's not in Skyfall.

"Then maybe you shouldn't be living here."

LeonCambridge shares Fubu's outrage:
whoa whoa whoa when did this guy become bond? ive been waiting for Pierce Brosnan to show up the last bond movie was die another day and i wait ten years for a new actor?
...to which geoprodigyx (he's very good at deciphering Apple Maps) replies, quite unsympathetic to LeonCambridge's confusion:
lmao what an ignorant ****. u got knocked on ur head or something?

For Choueiry Mikel, however, LeonCambridge's decade absence recalls a fonder time:
die another day 007 is the best ,skyfall = 0

It's unclear if Choueiry Mikel was expressing shock at his own statement, or he was simply equating Skyfall to the value of zero.

VOLCOManiac91 sought for the root of Skyfall's failure beyond the 'needs more Bron-Homme' critiques:

Not to be Mean But For me (in my opinion) this was the worst Bond Movie.. Low / Much blah blah / Lack of action Like 25% of the Movie is just action / Gay Villain / & again Bad action.. ima miss The old bonds Style :/ where the Cars threw rockets, Watches threw Lasers & Pens were explosives.. aka Pierce Brosnan Movies* ima also Miss those old days Ps2 bond games sigh* memories xD
Daniel craig Srew this Movies. Just saying

Unfortunately, VOLCOManiac91's time frantically hammering at the console controllers for those PlayStation 2 Bond games (such as the seminal Nightfire) appear to have given him a spasmodic Caps Lock finger.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/82/007_-_Nightfire_Coverart.png

TheAlcapone100 (insinuating there are at least 99 other 'The Al Capones') agrees with VOLCOManiac91's assessment:
Old james bond had better car that became invisible in snow and fire rocket.... and James bond in 2012 shows a crap car firing bullets hehehehe this was the worst movie i have ever watched i mean james bond movie is full of action this was not at all... this was crappy the only thing i liked was the song of Adele nothing else...
Whereas jaybrick8920 manages to make these arguments more concisely:
It didnt have enough action for me an the bad guy was gay

LullabyOfZombie's exercise in lateral thinking offers another reason for why some found Skyfall so disappointing:
why does many movie take place on chiiiiiiiiina these days? LOL i read transformer will be played by mark and took in china, too, anyway only stupid person who can say this is good movie, not that bad but so unbelievably boring!

But it's not all well-argued critique for Bond; the YouTube comments contained overwhelming praise for the agent's latest outing, too. Like this, from Moviepro2k:
I were going to say " I love James Bond movies" with less letters, and i almost wrote "Love JB movies" ...but nvm...Skyfall is one of my favorite movies so far!! :)
David McKean was also ecstatic, but more so for breaking the law (Flickering Myth does not condone breaking the law), and that Skyfall was a bit better than Shark Night:
I saw the movie last night and I'm 9. In your face pg 13! There is lots of blood. I've also seen Jaws, Shark night, (by the way, Shark night is not good at all) I even saw Jaws when I was 8.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-muzvkP7oAD4/Td2MpWSxsbI/AAAAAAAAAB0/5ESZQPPXPSM/s400/Shark%2BNight%2B3D%2BMovie.jpg
Definitely suitable for a 9-year-old.
And we end with Shoaib JK's favourite bit in the film:
love the bit where Q says " did U expect a ball pen which explodes??" :P
he ridiculised Goldeneye.... eventhough Golden eye was also awesome( no harm offence intended :P)

No harm offence taken, Shoaib JK. No harm offence taken at all.

The Hobbit: An Unexpectedly Short Journey - fan-made trailer and TV spot re-edit

Peter Jackson may have been able to squeeze three movies out of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic children's novel The Hobbit, but a new fan-made re-edit of the trailers and television spots for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has done a pretty good job of wrapping up the Lord of the Rings prequel in just seven-and-a-half minutes.

"This is a fan made compilation of all The Hobbit: Unexpected Journey trailers and TV spots, including: Announcement trailer, Announcement trailer (G), Trailer 1, TV Spot 1 - 7, UK 1 minute TV spot, Japanese 1 minute TV Spot. Shots and sequences have been re-ordered into the possible running order of the final film. The audio can be choppy in places as original trailer background music overlaps much of the dialogue."

Of course, there's less than a three week wait now until we can see the entire thing (well, the first part, at least), with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hitting UK cinemas on Thursday, December 13th ahead of a North American release the following day.

With just over a week to go until the home entertainment release of The Dark Knight Rises, these past few days have seen Warner Bros.' marketing team giving us a tantalising sneak peek at some of the Blu-ray special features; we've already seen some early concept art for Bane (see here), as well as behind-the-scenes clips focusing on Tom Hardy's transformation into the monstrous villain and the destruction of the Gotham Rogues stadium (see here). Well, now it's the turn of Anne Hathaway's Selina Kyle to take centre stage, with a new promotional image of Catwoman arriving online via the official Facebook page:

Meanwhile, a short behind-the-scenes clip has also been released, which looks at Hathaway's portrayal of Gotham's feline fatale and features comments from director Christopher Nolan, producer Emma Thomas, stunt coordinator Tom Struthers and fight arranger Buster Reeves, whose name superbly compliments his job title, it must be said. Anyway, take a look:

Anne Hathaway and Tom Hardy are joined in the cast of The Dark Knight Rises by Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard, and the film hits shelves on December 3rd in the UK and December 4th in North America.

R.I.P. Larry Hagman (1931-2012)

American actor Larry Hagman, best known for his iconic role as the scheming oil tycoon J. R. Ewing in the US TV series Dallas, has passed away at a hospital in Dallas, Texas after battling throat cancer and cirrhosis of the liver. He was 81.

The son of Broadway star Mary Martin, Hagman was born in Forth Worth, Texas in 1931 and began his acting career on the stage in the early 1950s. After a spell in the United States Air Force Hagman returned to the theatre and also enjoyed several television and film roles before securing his big break in 1965 when he was cast alongside Barbara Eden as astronaut Anthony Nelson in the popular US sitcom I Dream of Jeannie (1965-1970). However, it wasn't until 1977 that Hagman secured the role for which he would become a household name, starring as J.R. - the eldest son of the Ewing family - in the hit prime-time soap opera Dallas.

Originally intended as a five-part miniseries, Dallas premiered in 1978 and would eventually run for fourteen seasons, with Hagman's J.R. taking centre stage and becoming one of the best-loved villains in television history. Featuring in classic storylines such as the 'Who Shot J.R.?' mystery that gripped audiences in 1980, Hagman secured two Emmy Award nominations and four Golden Globe nominations before the show's end in 1991. Having appeared in all 357 episodes of Dallas' original run (as well as five guest appearances in the spin-off Knots Landing), Hagman subsequently reprised the role for several TV movies and returned to the part once again this year in TNT's relaunched version of the show.

The Week in Spandex - The Dark Knight Rises, Man of Steel, The Wolverine, Thor: The Dark World, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and more

Our weekly round up of all the latest news stories from the world of screen superheroes, including The Dark Knight Rises, Man of Steel, The Wolverine, Thor: The Dark World, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Hulk, Kick-Ass 2, Wonder Woman and more...

There's just over a week to go until the epic conclusion to Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight saga arrives on Blu-ray and DVD, and over the past few days we've been treated to a sneak peek at some of the special features set to accompany The Dark Knight Rises' home entertainment release. Be sure to check out a new promotional image of Anne Hathaway's Selina Kyle and a short Catwoman featurette [see here], along with behind-the-scenes clips exploring the destruction of the Gotham Rogues stadium and Tom Hardy's transformation into Bane [see here]. And speaking of of the brutal villain, some early concept art has also arrived online (which features a more traditional, comic-book influenced mask), in addition to a batch of 45 behind-the-scenes images from his bone-crunching sewer showdown with Christian Bale's Batman...

...As the clock ticks down to the release of The Dark Knight Rises, Warner Bros. has also launched a new marketing campaign offering fans the chance to unlock an "exclusive reward" from Zack Snyder's Man of Steel by sharing this link on various social networking sites. With a new trailer set to debut in cinemas before Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey next month, it's probably safe to assume that this will be some kind of teaser, similar to Marvel's unveiling of a sneak peek at the Iron Man 3 trailer last month. Speaking of the new Man of Steel trailer, Zack Snyder took a moment to discuss his excitement about the forthcoming preview, as well as praising Henry Cavill and Michael Shannon for their work as Kal-El and his Kryptonian nemesis General Zod [see here], while it also appears that Tahmoh Penikett (Smallville, Battlestar Galactica) has been confirmed as appearing in the film, with a rumour emerging that his character 'Henry Ackerdson' could be an alias for Metallo...

...While Warner Bros. has Man of Steel on its upcoming slate of DC movies, a worrying report emerged this week suggesting that an internal power struggle between Warner executives Bruce Rosenblum, Kevin Tsujihara and Jeff Robinov has slowed development on future DC adaptations such as The Flash, although presumably the studio still plans to push ahead with its Justice League feature, which is expected to go up against Joss Whedon's The Avengers 2 in 2015. Be sure to check out the Martin Deer's article 'The Worrying Truth About Warner Bros. and DC Comics', where he discusses this reported power struggle and its impact on the studio's DC Comics superhero output [see here]...

...Superman fans may have an extra reason to catch Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey next month, but reports that the Man of Steel trailer would be accompanied by a first trailer for The Wolverine have been shot down by director James Mangold, who took to Twitter to announce that we can expect our first glimpse of Hugh Jackman's latest X-Men outing early next year. Meanwhile, Jackman also took a moment to credit his buddy (and Man of Steel star) Russell Crowe for helping him to secure his now signature role way back when Bryan Singer was casting the original X-Men: "Bryan Singer asked Rusty [we assume Crowe] to do Wolverine, and he said, 'Nah mate I've just done Gladiator, it's not for me but you should look at this guy...'"

...Moving on to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and The Daily Mail posted some new photos from the Greenwich set of Thor: The Dark World featuring Natalie Portman's Jane Foster and Stellan Skarsgard's Erik Selvig, while some potential scene details courtesy of Expederest: "All the rubble and stuff is from a spaceship that crashes into the grounds. It’ll be added with CGI later on. So will more of the damage caused by the crash... Malekith [Christopher Eccleston] leads an army of elves over the rubble, which is where the ship would of crash landed... From what I remember, there are two worlds occupying the same space, and it has something to do with the Prime Meridian Line... So the whole “two worlds blending together” thing could be true. I vaguely remember them saying it has a mystical or magical aspect about it." Meanwhile, both Chris Hemsworth and Anthony Hopkins have been speaking to MTV about the upcoming sequel, with Hopkins confirming that "I haven't been in the film that much" and that he has one encounter with Eccleston's Malekith the Accursed. So, you have to wonder if that spells bad news for the All-Father...

...A couple of weeks back it was announced that Dane DeHann (Chronicle), Brady Corbet (Melancholia) and Alden Ehrenreich (Beautiful Creatures) were under consideration for the role of Harry Osborn in the Sony superhero sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but it's since been announced that four new names are in contention, with director Marc Webb said to have screen tested Douglas Booth (Romeo and Juliet, Noah), Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Snow White and the Huntsman), Eddie Redmayne (My Week with Marilyn, Les Miserables) and Boyd Holbrook (Hatfields & McCoys, The Host) alongside Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker...

...During a promotional interview for his latest film Life of Pi, director Ang Lee spoke to Vulture about his disappointing 2003 superhero effort Hulk, expressing his regret at not delivering a fun take on the Green Goliath more akin to his recent appearance in The Avengers: "I learned quite a bit about CG from Hulk, and I wouldn't have been able to do Life of Pi without that. But it's easier to create an animal, because there exists a good reference — so a tiger or a hyena is easier than a 2,000-pound rage monster. The hardest thing to do is the weight, not the skin, because there's no reference for something that size that is agile. And the technology's improved, so you can have more details with Mark Ruffalo's Hulk. My problem is that I took the whole thing too seriously. I should have had more fun with it, instead of all the psychodrama..!"

...And finally, UFC Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell has filmed a cameo alongside John Leguizamo in director Jeff Wadlow's Kick-Ass 2, while Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Red Mist) also tweeted a behind-the-scenes photo of himself and co-stars Chloe Grace Moretz (Hit Girl) and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), with the latter dressed in a reappropriated Big Daddy costume...

...During an interview with A.V. Club, Red Dawn and G.I. Joe: Retaliation star Adrianne Palicki spoke about her role as Wonder Woman in last year's failed TV pilot, as well as expressing her desire to star in a superhero movie: "I would love to play Wonder Woman on the big screen. And if not, Supergirl. I know it’s not the coolest character, but I fell in love with her. My brother is a comic-book writer, and I was always in love with comics. My brother would always be reading all these comics with these dudes, and I was this little blonde, mousy-looking child, and I looked at this beautiful, blonde, blue-eyed chick, and I was like, 'I want to be her!' She was one of the very few that I found. Or Rogue [X-Men]. I’d really like to play Rogue..."

...And finally, one actor who doesn't seem to share such enthusiasm for the comic book genre is End of Watch star Jake Gyllenhaal; having previously been linked to the roles of Spider-Man (as a replacement for Tobey Maguire in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2) and Batman (in Christopher Nolan's reboot Batman Begins), Gyllenhaal told Short List that he's in no rush to jump on the superhero bandwagon: "At a certain point you realize there's always someone more interesting, talented and ready to do a role than you are - and you won't get every role you go for. All I want right now is to hone my skills and become a better actor, not dream about wearing a cape. But you never know..."

Blu-ray Review - The Campaign (2012)

The Campaign, 2012.

Directed by Jay Roach.
Starring Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis, Jason Sudeikis, Dylan McDermott, Katherine LaNasa, Sarah Baker, John Lithgow, Dan Aykroyd and Brian Cox.

SYNOPSIS:

Two corrupt businessmen hatch a plan to have a naive tourism director run against a controversial congressman vying for a fifth term.

Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis go head to head in The Campaign. Ferrell stars as Cam Brady, a controversial congressman who wins in North Carolina every year because he runs unopposed. Tired of Brady winning every year, the Motch brothers (John Lithgow and Dan Aykroyd) come up with a plan to have someone run against Brady who they can have control over. In comes Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), a well-mannered tour guide that doesn't have a clue when it comes to politics. It's a showdown between Brady and Huggins as hilarity ensues.

The Campaign works in some ways but fails in others, keeping it from being a really great comedy. With it being an election year this movie could have really benefited from having more satirical humor. There are a few moments that poke fun at the election process and the types of people who run but there just isn't enough of it. Instead the movie tends to rely way too much on crude sexual humor for most of its laughs. I'm not saying crude humor can't be funny but it shouldn't be the basis of almost every joke. That being said there are plenty of jokes that work and a good few of them are laugh out loud moments.

Playing a huge part in making the movie worth watching are the comedic performances of Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis. Both are in top form here and really sell their characters. The scenes they have together are the best parts of the movie and watching them go head to head is a real treat. Other than the two stars, the supporting cast is somewhat hit and miss. Jason Sudeikis and Dylan McDermott are both great as Cam and Marty's campaign managers and Sarah Baker is funny as Marty's wife. John Lithgow and Dan Aykroyd aren't in the movie much and don't really do a lot with their limited screen time; the same can be said for Brian Cox, who plays Marty's dad.

Overall, The Campaign provides a good few laughs and has strong comedic performances from Ferrell and Galifianakis. It has a little too much crude humor but at only 85 minutes enough of the jokes work to make this one worth a watch.

The Found Footage Project

Commenting on the Critics with Simon Columb...

Charlie Lyne writes for The Guardian about how found footage films are dominating cinema - and the functional problems with this...

"The central conceit of the found footage genre – fictional characters, be they priests, partygoers or palaeontologists, suddenly being struck by the inexplicable urge to immortalise the drama of their lives on film – can be a difficult one to sell to an audience, but that hasn't stopped film-makers in their hundreds trying their hands."

My own experience with found footage films dates back to The Blair Witch Project. Though I didn't see the film at the cinema, I recall buying the film on DVD and still, my friends and I were unsure whether it was a true story. As a keen camper in my younger years, I related to the woodland-walking, awkward-bags-on-back and within-tent discussions. I remember watching the film on my own and becoming exceptionally scared - and then, upon recommending it to my friends, we watched the film and to cover our own awkwardness, we joked, laughed and mocked the characters on screen. Funnily enough, we didn't find it as scary the second time.

It was only when the Paranormal Activity series became a staple of Halloween did the genre really pick-up pace. Now with a production of Paranormal Activity 5 under way, it seems that the horror-in-the-house found-footage is still popular. It picked up a huge amount of support when Empire's Olly Richards graded Cloverfield five-stars and Chronicle, only recently, gained positive press too.

The reality is that the found footage genre is merely a progression on the use of in-film recreated footage. Personally, my own favourite found footage moment is within M. Night Shyamalan's Signs, whereby the family in their own house are watched news footage and the TV reveals the first appearance of the alien visitors. Joaquin Phoenix moves close to the TV, desperate to see what is going to happen - as are we. Children shout and run around a house, Mexican families point outside... and then an alien, by accident, walks in shot. The TV commentator rewinds the tape - and we see it again. It pauses and we watch in awe.

Independence Day even managed to include it's own element of 'found footage' as the wide variety of TV stations showed how the UFOs were affecting the various parts of the world. In a brilliant 'feature' of the DVD, you could watch the many, many TV reports which were created to play in the background of scenes to add an element of authenticity. The use of media within Independence Day truly is fascinating as TV stations obsess about the alien invasion - and with 24 hour news channels now, you can only imagine the repeated footage replayed and dissected time-and-time again on TV. Another brilliant use is within The Dark Knight as The Joker tortures a Batman-wannabe - shouting "look at me!" down the camera - absolutely terrifying.

This week's incredible End of Watch has had to deal with its own onslaught of criticism for the choice to film using found-footage. Anton Bitel for Little White Lies writes how "Ayer deploys his voguish POV style in a manner that some might call postmodern, but those less generously inclined will regard simply as half-assed". With regard to this specific element of End of Watch  I believe it manages to straddle a style of filmmaking that is still finding its feet - End of Watch is not exclusively the footage 'found' on LAPD Cop Brian Taylor (Gyllenhaal); it is a combination of footage on criminals mobile-phones and footage elsewhere. In some cases, it is clearly simply a stylistic trait - whereby no-one is 'behind' the camera. This is a different approach and at the very least, is innovative in its use of the filmmaking style.

We live in a video-obsessed world. On the London Underground, rather than merely posters - stations now have screens every metre as you move up the escalators. We're talking at least twenty separate screens - on each side of one escalator. Huge posters are now videos - with bus stops including a small screen playing a silent film trailer. You only have to look at Blade Runner to see where we are heading. Combine this with the constantly uploaded videos on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. Those shakey-videos whereby someone recorded a Macarena dance-routine late in the night and only in the morning do you realise that everyone has seen it online. This is an inevitable future and we, as an audience, are becoming more adept at interpreting this footage - and relating to what is on-screen. "Found footage" films, in cinema, is still a new form of filmmaking and they are still learning the ropes. Imagine two films released - one in cinemas and one on DVD. The former a high-class, glossy production; the latter a handheld 'we-were-there' personal-video of the event. Maybe a TV series akin to Vantage Point whereby each week an event is captured in a different way - mobile-phone, CCTV, skype, filmmakers, etc.

We cannot be angry with 'found footage' films, we simply need to wait for the current 'trend' to pass over and then, it will simply be a different way to digest a story, rather than a genre unto itself.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 leads a record breaking Holiday Weekend

In a year rampant with speculation about the life expectancy of the theatrical moviegoing experience, a slew of new films help propel the Thanksgiving holiday to a record five day box office weekend.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2, Skyfall, and Lincoln remained in their respective slots as the number one, two, and three films in North America this weekend in spite of competition from three new major releases.

The final Twilight film took in $64 million in its extended second weekend.  Even with an almost 70% drop week over week, the movie was still strong enough to hold the top spot.

Skyfall continues its impressive worldwide run with strong North American box office netting another $51 million dollars over the long holiday weekend.  While not exactly as sexy as James Bond, the political intrigue of Lincoln still remains a strong draw with $34 million in ticket sales.  The popularity of the presidential portrait is keeping the movie at the forefront of award season conversations.  Expect to see Lincoln play strong all the way through the end of the year.

The new releases helped bolster the strong financials, led by the DreamWorks animated family film Rise of the Guardians with $32 million, which was good enough for fourth place, although everyone agrees the opening is underwhelming.  Last year saw a slew of holiday themed films underperform at the box office.  Apparently American audiences are tiring of the predictable annual holiday themed animated releases.   I attribute this to a glut of product choking the pipeline.  With the success of Hotel Transylvania in October, and Wreck-It Ralph in November, there has been very little real estate for a new animated film to carve out an audience.  In spite of positive reviews, Rise of the Guardians may end up a disappointment.

Ang Lee's visual feast Life of Pi rode a wave of good reviews and mind blowing visuals to a $30 million opening weekend.   The adaptation had a costly $120 million dollar price tag.  While the film is being sold on its three dimensional merits, it's going to take a strong hold next week to see if the film has some life left.

The remake of the 80's propaganda classic Red Dawn had been on the shelf for years gathering dust, but thanks to Chris Hemsworth and some nifty counter-programming strategy the movie was able to generate $22 million over the extended holiday weekend and crack the top 10 in seventh place.

Next week is pretty sparse.  Traditionally American theaters don't put out a lot of new product the week after a holiday.  Brad Pitt stars in Killing Them Softly which sees a modest release.  And what better way to celebrate the holiday season than with a brutal horror film?  The sequel The Collection gets a theatrical release.  Don't expect much of a change in the rankings next week.

Here's your top films for North America...

1. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2
Weekend Estimate: $64 million; $226 million total

2. Skyfall
Weekend Estimate: $51 million; $221 million total

3. Lincoln
Weekend Estimate: $34 million; $62 million total

4. Rise of the Guardians
Weekend Estimate: $32 million

5. Life of Pi
Weekend Estimate: $30 million

Henry Cavill's Man of Steel to appear in Justice League?

$

We know that Warner Bros. is looking to pit its roster of DC Comics superheroes against Earth's Mightiest Heroes in 2015 when Justice League goes up against Marvel's The Avengers 2, but so far it remains unclear how - and if - the studio plans to tie the team-up into its wider DC movie universe. It's been assumed that WB will use the Justice League movie to launch a new wave of DC superhero features, taking the opposite route to Marvel Studios, who established its roster of characters with individual outings before bringing them together for this year's blockbuster ensemble The Avengers.

Nevertheless, there's been talk that Justice League could instead take place in its own continuity, one that's entirely separate from any solo features - such as the inevitable Batman reboot and, of course, next year's hotly-anticipatedMan of Steel. However, during an interview with the New York Post, actor Henry Cavill has confirmed that he's signed on to reprise the role of Superman for two more movies, with director Zack Snyder hinting that one of these could see him joining DC's stable of superheroes as part the epic team-up.

"I don’t know how Justice League is going to be handled. Honestly, I don’t. But ‘The Man of Steel’ exists, and Superman is in it. I don’t know how you’d move forward without acknowledging that," said Snyder, who also offered the following response when asked if he came under any pressure from WB to integrate Man of Steel into a shared superhero universe: "I can’t really say anything to that, because that’s a big spoiler. I will say, yeah, they trust me to keep them on course."

Based on Snyder's comments, it would seem that Man of Steel will serve as Warner's Iron Man, and it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to imagine we'll get some kind of post-credits sequence setting up Justice League when the Superman reboot when it hits cinemas next June. An appearance from Batman is probably out of the question, but there were rumours earlier this year of a potential Wonder Woman cameo...
