Sam Raimi returns to the director's chair for the first time since 2009's Drag Me to Hell with Walt Disney Pictures' upcoming 3D fantasy adventure Oz: The Great and Powerful, and the studio has just released a brand new theatrical poster, which features our first look at one of the film's three witches...

A prequel to L. Frank Baum's children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (and the 1939 MGM classic The Wizard of Oz), Oz: The Great and Powerful stars James Franco (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) as Oscar Diggs, a small-time circus magician who finds himself swept away to the Land of Oz where he meets three witches - Theodora (Mila Kunis; Ted), Evanora (Rachel Weisz; The Bourne Legacy) and Glinda (Michelle Williams; My Week with Marilyn) - who are not convinced he is the great wizard who everyone has been expecting.

Oz: The Great and Powerful has been written by Mitchell Kapner (The Whole Nine Yards) and David Lindsay-Abaire (Rise of the Guardians) and also features Zach Braff (Scrubs), Abigail Spencer (This Means War), Tim Holmes (Real Steel), Martin Klebba (Zombieland) and Joey King (The Dark Knight Rises). It is due for released on March 8th, 2013; watch the first trailer here.

Benedict Cumberbatch (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, War Horse) is going to star as Brian Epstein in a biopic that tells the story of the manager of The Beatles.

Epstein, who signed the band in 1961 and passed away in 1967 from an accidental drug overdose, is sometimes called "the fifth Beatle". Todd Graff wrote the screenplay, which has been described as the story of "the man who threw the biggest party of the 1960s but ultimately forgot to invite himself."

Paul McGuigan (Push, Lucky Number Slevin), who has directed Cumberbatch in the TV series Sherlock, will direct the film. Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman, and Simon Halfon are producing.

Cumberbatch is playing Smaug in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which is due out in the UK on December 14th. He will also be appearing in Star Trek Into Darkness with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, and Twelve Years a Slave alongside Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender.

Sony delays a decision on Ghostbusters 3

Well, here's a shock... despite reports last month that Sony Pictures Entertainment had given director Ivan Reitman the green light to shoot Ghostbusters III next summer, The Hollywood Reporter has now revealed that "any decision on Ghostbusters III, the long, long-gestating sequel, has been postponed until the end of March [2013] - this after Men in Black 3 writer Etan Cohen was paid a huge sum of money for a script."

Confirming the original plan to shoot the sequel next summer, THR now claims that filming on Ghostbusters III "couldn't start before the fall at the earliest" due to uncertainty over the financial stability of Sony's Japanese parent company. Although Sony's chief executive Kaz Hirai has played down talk of financial difficulties, Sony has recently sold half of George Clooney's next directorial effort Monuments Men to Fox and Adam Sandler has signed a deal with Paramount to produce his next film Ridiculous 6.

The third instalment of the Ghostbusters movie franchise has seemingly been in development from the moment that Ghostbusters II hit cinemas way back in 1989, although this year has brought renewed optimism that the project might finally see the light of day. However, if Ghostbusters III does become a reality, it will be without Bill Murray, with Dan Aykroyd confirming earlier this year that Murray had opting against reprising the role of Peter Venkman alongside Aykroyd's Ray Stanz, Harold Ramis' Egon Spengler and Ernie Hudson's Winston Zeddemore.

Star Wars Episode VII to be an original story

October 30th, 2012 will be a day long remembered for Star Wars fans, with The Walt Disney Company purchasing Lucasfilm for $4 billion, and announcing plans to continue the epic space opera with Star Wars Episode VII - the first instalment of a new trilogy set to begin in 2015.

Naturally, there's been an absolute tonne of speculation about the possibilities for the Disney Trilogy, but any fans hoping to see an adaptation of Timothy Zahn's 'Thrawn Trilogy' - the post-Return of the Jedi novels Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising and The Last Command - will be disappointed by the news the new films will overlook any existing Expanded Universe material, with a Lucasfilm source confirming to E!Online that "[Episode VII] is an original story." Furthermore, The Hollywood Reporter claims that "one possibility being considered is an Avengers-style movie universe with not only Lucas' planned final trio of films, but offshoot movies focussing on individual characters."

At the moment, the only thing that seems certain is that we'll be seeing the long-rumoured further adventures of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo and company, although it remains to be seen whether the original cast members will return for this sequel trilogy. However, during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Mark Hamill has revealed that Lucas informed both he and Carrie Fisher of his plans to continue the Star Wars saga last year:

"I had no idea that George was going to sell to Disney until I read it online like everybody else. He did tell us last summer about wanting to go on and do [Episodes] VII, VIII, and IX, and that [newly appointed Lucasfilm president] Kathleen Kennedy would be doing them... Last August, he asked Carrie [Fisher] and I to have lunch with him and we did. I thought he was going to talk about either his retirement or the Star Wars TV series that I’ve heard about — which I don’t think we were going to be involved in anyway, because that takes place between the prequels and the ones we were in and, if Luke were in them, he’d be anywhere from a toddler to a teenager so they’d get an age-appropriate actor — or the 3-D releases. So when he said, 'We decided we’re going to do Episodes VII, VIII, and IX,' I was just gobsmacked. 'What? Are you nuts?!'... He was just talking about writers and the fact that he wouldn’t be directing. I guess he wanted us to know before everybody else knew."

The CW's latest superhero series Arrow is now four episodes into its run and continues to perform well in the ratings, with last night's episode pulling in just short of 3.5 million viewers across the pond, and as the show begins to find its stride, the producers continue to build on their stable of supporting characters from the pages of DC Comics. Roger Avary to write and direct Castle Wolfenstein

Academy Award-winning screenwriter Roger Avary (Pulp Fiction, Silent Hill) is to write and direct an adaptation of the World War II video game series Castle Wolfenstein. According to Deadline, the project is envisioned as "in the vein of Captain America and Inglourious Basterds [and is] about a young U.S. Army Captain and a British Special Agent on a top-secret mission to Castle Wolfenstein where Hitler will be for the unveiling of a new secret weapon. After reaching the castle, the heroes are confronted with Himmler’s SS Paranormal Division and must fight not only for their survival but for a mission that could alter the course of the war."

The Wolfenstein series launched way back in 1981 with the original action-adventure shooter Castle Wolfenstein, and was followed by a sequel, Beyond Castle Wolfenstein, in 1984. The series was rebooted by id Software (the company behind Doom and Quake) as a first person shooter in 1992 with Wolfenstein 3D, while later instalments in the franchise include 2001's Return to Castle Wolfenstein, 2003's Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and 2009's Wolfenstein. An adaptation of Return to Castle Wolfenstein by Avary and Silent Hill producer Samuel Hadida was first announced in 2007, before being put on hold as Avary was charged with manslaughter and DUI in 2008.

"I’ve been playing the Wolfenstein games since I was a kid, and feel that their outlandish sensibility has deeply influenced my own writing and directing throughout my career," states Avary, whose other credits include the screenplay for Beowulf and writing and directing duties on Killing Zoe and The Rules of Attraction. “I have always thought Wolfenstein, transformed and opened for the screen to wider audiences not familiar with the games, would be a major cinematic experience, which is why I introduced it to Samuel."

American Masters Review - Inventing David Geffen

$

Recently at the Toronto International Film Festival, the first film biography on music mogul David Geffen was screened as part of the upcoming programming slate for the Emmy Award-winning PBS series American Masters.  The opening title sequence emphasizes the accomplishments of Geffen as it features a massive collage of archival photographs, album covers and movie posters which the native of Brooklyn, New York had a role in producing.

Key to the production is the participation of the title character who displays a frank openness in discussing the successes and failures in his career.  What is striking is the ability of David Geffen to turn adversity into a new business opportunity.  Lacking the educational requirements to join the William Morris Agency, he forged his academic credentials and later after a six month vigil intercepted and altered a letter exposing the lie.  When the William Morris Agency would not represent musician Laura Nyro, Geffen became her agent; when the performer was reluctant to tour, he established a publishing company with Nyro and had other music artists record her songs.  When record companies would not sign Jackson Browne, Geffen expanded his management company with Elliot Roberts to include Asylum Records.

Life has not been filled without disappointments and tragedies.  David Geffen viewed it as a devastating act of betrayal when Laura Nyro chose to stay with Columbia Records.  At the age of the 33, he was misdiagnosed with bladder cancer which caused Geffen to reassess what was important to him.  A love affair with Cher burned out after 18 months and good friends were dying from AIDS which led him to donate millions to medical research and to publicly declare his homosexuality.  The legendary ruthlessness and mercurial temper is touch upon with the only major episode explored being the decision to sue Neil Young for creating songs that where uncharacteristic of him.  For Young, he believes for Geffen that the art of the deal was his stage.  Jackson Browne talks about overhearing telephone negotiations conducted by his agent that caused him cringe due to the audacious threats being made.

Clever animated segments which have a cutout and paste quality fill in the gaps such as illustrating a recorded conversation between David Geffen and Clive Davis from Columbia Records.  There is a huge wealth of archival of footage on display which is accompanied by talking head interviews with Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, Elton John, Don Henley, Nora Ephron, Mike Nichols, and Irving Azoff.  Joni Mitchel was inspired to write a tribute to Geffen who at the time had been fired from Warner Bros. Pictures; it features the classic lines, “I was a free man in Paris/ I felt unfettered and alive/ There was nobody calling me up for favours/ And no one’s future to decide/ You know I’d go back there tomorrow/ But for the work I’ve taken on/ Stoking the star maker machinery/ Behind the popular song.”

During his acceptance speech for being inducted at the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame in 2010, David Geffen stated, “I have no talent except to be able to enjoy and recognize it in others.  I love music, the movies, Broadway and wanted to spend my life in the support of those creative people.”  Inventing David Geffen is as engaging as the man himself and you can see for yourself as the television premiere airs Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at 8 p.m. (ET) on PBS (check local listings).

Guillermo del Toro planning the DC Comics team-up Heaven Sent

Now that Christopher Nolan's Batman saga has come to an end with the release of The Dark Knight Rises this past July, the future of Warner Bros.' stable of DC Comics properties looks a little uncertain. Next year, Nolan, screenwriter David S. Goyer and director Zack Snyder will reboot Superman with the hotly-anticipated Man of Steel, while the studio also has a live-action Lobo adaptation in the works from director Brad Peyton (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island), not to mention the long-rumoured superhero team-up Justice League.

However, if the folks at Latino Review are to be believed, Justice League may not be the first DC Comics ensemble to reach the screen, with Guillermo del Toro (Blade II, Hellboy) apparently keen to do his own 'supernatural' version of The Avengers, "combining all the magical beings from DC Comics in one epic adventure." Entitled Heaven Sent, the proposed project is said to feature the likes of Deadman, Etrigan the Demon, Hellblazer, Phantom Stranger, Sargon the Sorcerer, The Spectre, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, Zatara, with Warner Bros.' lawyers currently working to ensure the studio has the necessary rights to all of the characters.

Guillermo del Toro is currently putting the finishing touches to his epic kaiju homage Pacific Rim, which is due for release on July 12th, 2013, and he also has a number of other projects on his upcoming slate, including an adaptation of Pinocchio, the long-rumoured sequel Hellboy 3, and the seemingly-going-nowhere Marvel TV series The Incredible Hulk. According to Latino Review, Heaven Sent still looks to be some time away from production, so let's hope this one doesn't go the same way as the umpteen other projects del Toro has abandoned over the years...

Mark Wahlberg eyes Point Blank remake

Mark Wahlberg (Pain and Gain) and Stephen Levinson (Entourage) have signed on to produce a remake of Fred Cavayé's French action thriller Point Blank, according to Variety.

The film centres on a happily married nurse working in a Paris hospital. When his very pregnant wife is kidnapped before his helpless eyes, everything falls apart. After being knocked unconscious, he comes to and his cell phone rings: he has three hours to get Sartet, a man under police surveillance, out of the hospital. Samuel quickly finds himself pitted against rival gangsters and trigger-happy police in a deadly race to save the lives of his wife and unborn child.

This is not the first time one of Cavayé’s films have received an American makeover, as his 2008 film Anything for Her - a Prison Break-style action drama focused on a husband who attempts to break his wrongly accused wife out of prison - was given the Hollywood treatment as The Next Three Days, which starred Russell Crowe (Gladiator) and was directed by Paul Haggis (Crash)

There's no mention yet as to whether Wahlberg is eyeing a starring role in the Point Blank remake, but it does seem like quite a good fit for him.

Marc Webb talks The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Following on from news of the the potential casting of Jamie Foxx (Ray, Django Unchained) as the villainous Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, director Marc Webb has taken part in an interview with Collider, during which he offered some updates on the future of the franchise:

"[The story with the parents] is the long shadow that’s cast over the three films," stated Webb, who made his directorial debut with 2009's (500) Days of Summer before taking on the reins of Sony's Spidey reboot. "I want these films to have a serialized component, and there’s a slow burn to that.  I need to leave some juice for the second movie.  That was one of the more exciting things about creating Spider-Man, was that I could create more than one and there was a serialized component to it... We’re taking it one at a time.  I think one of the things I’ve learned… There are a lot of things that are harder than it seems, like designing the suit, for example.  We’re doing some revising on that.  We’re making some cool improvements on the suit."

Webb also went on to confirm that Electro is indeed the villain in this second instalment, stating that "I think Electro is an incredibly visual, exciting, dangerous villain.  There is a lot of appealing stuff that is going to happen as the world emerges." Meanwhile, the director also went on to discuss the role that Oscorp will play in the upcoming sequel: "When I was thinking about the universe as a whole — and I talked about this with [screenwriter] James Vanderbilt way back in the day — that all crazy stuff in this universe emerges from Oscorp. Oscorp predates Spider-Man and Peter Parker. His parents were involved in some way. And Oscorp represents… The building itself, there was something iconic about it. To me it’s like the Tower of Babel, which is this testament to man’s hubris. Peter’s relationship will evolve with it over time. That was really one of the central components, one of the pieces that tied all these stories together, this relationship with Oscorp."

So, with Oscorp playing another crucial role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, is there a chance that Norman Osborn could make his debut in the sequel alongside the previously confirmed Harry Osborn, or will we have to wait until the closing chapter of the trilogy to see Andrew Garfield's wall-crawler duking it out with the Green Goblin?

The Walking Dead Season 3 - Episode 3 Review

Piers McCarthy reviews the third episode of The Walking Dead season three...

I finished Episode 2’s review with: “could an unexpected event take place in episode 3? I’d count on it.” Episode 3 of The Walking Dead verified my idea that more of the unexpected was it on its way. I never imagined that the show would take an entirely separate direction away from Rick and his group, though in “Walk With Me” the story is based solely on Andrea and Michonne.

The episode starts off with a few quick shots of silent landscapes, then, out of nowhere, a helicopter flies in. The disruption of what we have to come to know as the muted normality is quite striking. It is also relatively confusing and, at first, you may believe this to be a flashback scene. The helicopter struggles with turbulence and eventually plummets to the ground. We see the smoke waft up from a distance, with the camera behind Andrea and Michonne looking at it with disbelief – confirming its presence in the current story-line. They venture toward it with Andrea seemingly more enthused about the notion of survivors.

Michonne is more concerned about what the wreckage may mean and goes to inspect it. The first casualty found has been split in half by the helicopter blade. As the remaining episode will include only a few gruesome special effects, the SFX team emphasise their great work with moments like this. Michonne barely has time to look over the crash site before a few cars pull up. She dashes back to Andrea and they watch from behind the bushes as men step out of the vehicles and clear the space around them. Any zombies shuffling towards them get taken out instantly by the 5-men-strong crew.

They are an efficient bunch, but their motivations are unclear. Andrea and Michonne are even more uncertain as to what they want and how violent or helpful they may be. As the divided dead soldier turns into a zombie, the two women watch as the leader of the group plunges a knife into his/its skull. They are unaware of the virus that brings any dead person back to life and so seeing them kill what they think to be a severely injured man has them petrified.

The two chained up zombies of Michonne’s cause too much noise and she is forced to cut off their heads. The men look into the bushes to look for where the noise may have come from before deciding to “roll out.” Just as Andrea and Michonne think they’re safe a familiar voice emerges from the trees behind them. Andrea knows the voice and anxiously turns around. She comes face to face with Merle Dixon, Daryl’s brother, last seen on the rooftop of an Atlanta building sawing his hand off. As a zombie comes from his behind he thrusts his knife (attached to his metallic stub on his handless right arm) under its mouth and into its brain. He stands before them asking Andrea for a hug, smiling satanically with his gun and bloodied bayonet.

Andrea and Michonne are taken back to hold-up where a nurse is on hand to help with any sickness. Andrea has little energy left and thankfully accepts the aid. Merle comes in and explains what happens to him and asks about his brother. Andrea only tells him so much – she is still clearly worried about him. Michonne says nothing throughout this interaction. The mystery of Michonne is highlighted throughout this episode, along with many of the new characters – incentives and agendas are foggy. The man who was calling the shots at the helicopter wreckage comes in to tell them how things are run. Both women are put off by the exaggerated authority but are told they are free to leave if they choose. Curiosity gets the better of Andrea and it’s mostly her decision to find out more that keeps them in the new sanctuary.

The leader of the scout group is known as the Governor. He is the head of the Woodbury household – a community gated off from walkers. He has built up a fortress where scores of people stay and survive. The first introduction to the area is in the dead of night and so you aren’t able to get a good idea of the place. What is clear, however, is the community is under a secure hold and rules and sanctions show Woodbury as a safe haven.

The next morning we see a bustling town deemed as a “working process” though it certainly seems perfect. At times it all appears too perfect, like a Truman Show or Pleasantville pastiche – and as those films showed, a perfect community has some skeletons in the closet. Michonne is the most sceptical, consistently frowning at every sight.

The pilot of the helicopter lies in one room with the nurse and the Governor watching over him. He tells the Governor the story of his society’s outbreak and mentions the few soldiers remaining close by. The Governor reassures the wounded man that he will find them and bring them to safety. The shot of this scene is mostly a low-angle take that makes the Governor seem foreboding. The other is a high-angle shot that has the pilot looking weak and vulnerable. In each case, the camera is telling us more about the Governor character and how he has power and control – perhaps a dangerous amount.

Before the Governor seeks out the pilot’s colleagues, he joins his friend Milton in examining Michonne’s zombie pets. The inspection of the zombies proves insightful – not only for the Governor but also the audience – mentioning how they lack of jaw leaves them with little motivation to feed, and “docile”. They also act as “repellent” and camouflage for Michonne – something we may have guessed but now give extra credence to her ingenuity, finally verified by other characters. As Milton and the Governor “impose logic on the chaos”, the world of the The Walking Dead begins to make more sense.

Andrea and Michonne have breakfast with the Governor and Milton, the latter two obviously wanting to learn more about their history and their experience in the outside world. Milton tries to ask Michonne about her two walkers but is given a silent stare as a retort. She understands that something is wrong about the entire situation and the constant questioning is worrying. Breakfast finishes and Andrea and Michonne discuss Woodbury and its controlling inhabitants – the latter is still distrustful whilst Andrea can’t understand why.

The Governor heads off to find the military left behind by the chopper. He pulls up to their guard-point and explains to one man how they have found the surviving pilot. As the troops get excited by the retrieval of their companion the Governor fires a bullet into one of their hearts. As the Governor is on his own we wonder, if only for a second, how he will escape unharmed. However, the bullet he fires is quickly followed by back-up’s coming from the surrounding grassland. Here is where our slight doubt of the Governor’s amicability is given standing. He is a callous and unflinching murderer who wants to rule the land now that the opportunity to revise it is there. The music that plays quietly under the dialogue is ominous; an extra feature that signals the Governor’s malice.

He and his team return to Woodbury to inform the community of the ill-fated troop that were killed by zombies. His ability to lie openly to 73 people is innate – he tells them a tall tale to keep them willing to stay within the Woodbury walls. The townspeople have no idea of what type of man he is other than his helpful guise. Andrea is also enamoured by his apparent hospitable nature and some flirting takes place, making the audience wonder if she will stay in Woodbury. The final scene shows the Governor walking around his apartment after sleeping with some random female civilian. He takes a short glance at a photo of him and what we imagine to be his wife and daughter – he shows little emotion upon looking at it, further adding to his mystery. That is before he steps into a dark room that he lights up with aquarium tanks full of severed heads. The top one is belonged to the pilot whilst two others were Michonne’s chained-up walkers. Why he has them is not explained but one can read into it as his trophies. He sits in front of them captivated by their ghostly eyes.

The Walking Dead’s third season is getting off to a tremendous start. Episodes like this where an alternate plot-point can be explored is a staple of great TV, especially when it entertains you as much as the regular narrative crux. The Governor looks to be a great villain and the point where hopefully Rick and him meet will make for some excitement.

Eon Productions, MGM and Sony Pictures have announced that 007's 23rd screen adventure Skyfall has marked the 50th anniversary of the James Bond movie franchise in style by overtaking Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 to claim the biggest seven day gross of all time at the UK box office with £37.2m in its opening week.

Skyfall had already recorded the highest opening weekend of the year, pulling in £20.2m from Friday to Sunday to shatter the year's previous best three day debut, The Dark Knight Rises (£14.3m). After just seven days in play, Skyfall has already made more than The Hunger Games (£23.7m), Prometheus (£24.7m), Ice Age 4: Continental Drift (£29.1m) and Ted (£29.8m) and it looks all but assured that the film will go on to surpass The Avengers (£51.6m) and The Dark Knight Rises (£55.8m) to become the highest grossing release of 2012.

Directed by Academy Award-winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty), Skyfall sees Daniel Craig returning for his third outing as Ian Fleming's super spy alongside Bond veteran Judi Dench as M, while the supporting cast includes Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men), Ralph Fiennes (Great Expectations), Ben Wishaw (Cloud Atlas), Naomie Harris (28 Days Later), Albert Finney (The Bourne Legacy), Helen McCrory (Hugo), Bérénice Marlohe (R.I.S. Police scientifique) and Ola Rapace (Wallander).
