Blu-ray Review - The Stuff (1985)

The Stuff, 1985

Directed by Larry Cohen
Starring Michael Moriarty, Andrea Marcovicci, Garrett Morris, Paul Sorvino, Scott Bloom

SYNOPSIS:

A delicious mysterious goo that oozes from the Earth is marketed as the newest dessert sensation. But the sugary treat rots more than teeth when zombie-like snackers begin infesting the world.

Certainly a cult favourite among 80s horror fans, The Stuff is unashamedly campy and it never takes itself too seriously. If you read deeper between the lines it could be seen as an allegory for US product consumption, but at the end of the day it's a movie about a marshmallow alien that takes over people who eat it.

The Stuff is a wonderfully cheesy affair about an alien lifeform that is discovered by a group of miners and through pure idiocy, they find that it tastes amazing. It quickly becomes the hot new product known as The Stuff and starts to take over the minds of Americans who can't get enough of it. However, a young boy named Jason discovers that The Stuff is a living being and along with a former FBI agent, they try to rid the world of The Stuff and stop those who have already been taken over by it.

There is a certain problem with films of this nature, and that is how people perceive it. Those who have watched The Stuff before will know what they're getting and enjoy the nostalgia ride, but a newcomer might see this as a "terrible movie". They'd be incorrect, but if you were to break it down and analyse it with a film snob mind then The Stuff is sort of a disaster. The acting (for the most part) is sub par, the writing isn't great, the effects don't hold up and the whole movie looks like it was put together by first year film students.

But that's part of The Stuff's charm.

If you can accept The Stuff for what it is, then you'll have a good time. It's funny in a clever self-aware fashion and its light tone means taking it seriously would be a pointless endeavour. All of the practical effects are utterly joyous and, while they may not be the most high tech, they are pretty impressive and inventive for the most part. Lots of camera trickery and footage reversal gives The Stuff some character and the scenes where it attacks its foes are a lot of fun. The film's most notorious scene (filmed in the same room that Johnny Depp met his demise in A Nightmare on Elm Street) is certainly wacky, but hard to hate.

Which really plays in contrast to the rest of the film. In a bizarre way, The Stuff treads a thin line of being brilliantly put together and being incredibly haphazard. Several scenes have dreadful ADR, there are jump cuts all over the place and the footage reversals often don't give The Stuff any fluid movement making it look really phony. It's hard to judge the movie on several of these merits as it is a case of "doing the best with what they had", but they are hard to ignore.

What does raise the bar however is the central performance from Michael Moriarty. Fans of the original few seasons of Law & Order will appreciate Moriarty's lackadaisical aura and his laid back performance really plays up to the madness of the movie. He is supported excellently by Garrett Morris in the handful of scenes he's in and the same can be said for Paul Sorvino. Sadly, Scott Bloom as the young Jason is pretty stiff and there really isn't much to Andrea Marcovicci, but they both would have struggled to outshine Moriarty. They all however embrace the movie for what it is and the effort from everyone involved means the movie never fails at being entertaining.

The Stuff would make an excellent double bill with Chuck Russell's 1987 remake of The Blob in that both have a similar theme of alien masses, but are totally different. Whereas The Blob is a more serious horror, The Stuff is a great example of how to have fun with this kind of monster movie and it succeeds in doing so. Is it great? No. But it's a lot of fun and that's all that matters sometimes.

Sit back and enjoy it. You might not be able to get enough.

The Daily Bugle updates with a new viral article for The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Sony's Daily Bugle viral site has updated with a new article, which wraps up the investigation into OsCorp over its involvement with the creation of the Lizard (Rhys Ifans) in The Amazing Spider-Man, as well as looking forward to the upcoming sequel with mention of a new prototype power plant that we imagine will play into the plot of the follow-up; check it out here...

OsCorp Cleared! by Ken Ellis

In a joint statement, the New York City Police Department and the Mayor’s office officially closed their investigation into gross and systematic ethics abuses at Oscorp Industries. Shockingly, the investigation resulted in no discovery of criminal mischief or charges filed, despite the indisputable fact that a lizard man rampaged through the city last year, causing millions of dollars in damage.

The closing of the investigation comes amidst rumors that Oscorp threatened to rescind the discounts they are providing the city for the completion of the new prototype power station.

The grand opening of the Oscorp Power Grid on the Lower East Side of Manhattan is planned for April 16. The grid is expected to provide renewable, clean electromagnetic energy to the city and reduce costs to consumers by forty percent - if it doesn’t blow up the city first, of course.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set for release on April 18th in the UK and on May 1st in North America, with returning stars Andrew Garfield (Peter Parker / Spider-Man), Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy), Sally Field (Aunt May), Chris Zylka (Flash Thompson), Campbell Scott (Richard Parker), Embeth Davidtz (Mary Parker), Martin Sheen (Ben Parker) and Denis Leary (George Stacy) joined by new additions Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained) as Electro, Dane DeHaan (Chronicle) as Harry Osborn, Paul Giamatti (12 Years a Slave) as The Rhino, Chris Cooper (American Beauty) as Norman Osborn, Colm Feore (Thor) as Donald Menken, Marton Csokas (The Lord of the Rings) as Dr. Kafka, B.J. Bates Motel Season 2 - Episode 2 Review

Alice Rush reviews the second episode of Bates Motel season 2....

After last week saw Bradley take the law into her own hands and murder Gil, whom she believed killed her father, this week’s episode of Bates Motel begins to deal with the fall out of her actions. Gil’s place within the drugs business that fuels the town means that things are about to get serious now he’s been murdered and we get our first proper taste of just how deep this business goes.

While Bradley is hiding in the Bates’ basement and Norman is off buying her hair dye and booking her bus tickets to Boston, Dylan and Remo are introduced to the guy who is taking over from Gil, a less than professional dealer called Zayn. He suspects the murder to be the work of another drug clan, an inkling echoed by Sheriff Romero who meets with the suspicious man at Miss Watson’s grave. This man transpires to be her father and a member of a rival family who threatens that the tranquillity of the town is soon to be destroyed with these murders. I find it an interesting narrative ploy that the hot headed actions of teenagers Bradley and (we can only assume for now) Norman have had such a huge impact on the status of the town, which leads into the idea that though this drug storyline is interesting and gives depth to the series, it is almost secondary in importance to what happens to the immediate main characters.

Speaking of, this week sees Norma desperately trying to inject some stability into her life by convincing Norman to audition for a musical with her. An odd plot choice but one that ultimately pays off in an intense and fantastic argument scene between the two outside of the theatre, as Norma breaks down and confesses that she is scared of what Norman may be capable of. The beauty of this series is that it’s given the Mother from ‘Psycho’ a real voice. Not merely a ghostly presence in the room, Norma is instead given passion and motive and we see her struggle so intensely just to find some happiness. Partly due to the writing and partly due to a stunning performance by Vera Farmiga, Norma begins to emerge as much more than just a controlling mother; she is terrified of anyone else getting hurt by Norman and is willing to put herself into danger to protect him from himself. Topping this whole sequence off is a gorgeous vocal performance from Norma/Farmiga as she emotionally sings her way through ‘Maybe This Time’ and it’s here that we get an insight into what a tortured character Norma Bates truly is.

She seems to catch a break however as Emma informs them of how Romero has charged a drug dealer with Miss Watson’s murder, much to Norma’s delight. Though the pressure is off Norman for the time being it is clear that Romero is merely doing this to try and keep the peace, so we can assume that he is not out of the woods yet. From one tortured character to another Bradley’s storyline seems to be wrapped up neatly this week as Dylan takes her to the bus station as Norman is preoccupied with Norma. It’s unsure whether we will see her return but for the time being she manages to escape and leaves Norman a heartfelt note calling him the “best person” she has ever known. If only she knew.

The episode ends on the dramatic introduction of Norma’s brother into the mixing pot. Though it seemed inevitable he would end up being introduced due to Norma’s confession of his incestuous abuse in season one, now he is a reality on screen there seems to be a rather uneasy feeling as to just how the writers are going to deal with this sensitive subject. Though then again the brilliant drama in ‘Bates Motel’ has always come from the strange relationship dynamics between the family and this new addition is certain to bring an explosive display of drama and emotion, not the least from poor Norma. If he proves to be yet another negative male influence in her life, I predict that this won’t be the last we see of Norman’s violent blackouts.

Official logo and synopsis for Fox's Batman prequel series Gotham

It's not quite as spectacular as the unveiling of Grant Gustin's Barry Allen in full costume as The Flash, but Fox has released the official logo for its upcoming Batman prequel series Gotham, which you can check out right here along with the series synopsis...

Gotham Logo

Everyone knows the name Commissioner Gordon. He is one of the crime world’s greatest foes, a man whose reputation is synonymous with law and order. But what is known of Gordon’s story and his rise from rookie detective to Police Commissioner? What did it take to navigate the multiple layers of corruption that secretly ruled Gotham City, the spawning ground of the world’s most iconic villains? And what circumstances created them – the larger-than-life personas who would become Catwoman, The Penguin, The Riddler, Two-Face and The Joker?

GOTHAM is an origin story of the great DC Comics super villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. From executive producer/writer Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist,” “Rome”), GOTHAM follows one cop’s rise through a dangerously corrupt city teetering on the edge of evil and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular super heroes of our time.

Growing up in Gotham City’s surrounding suburbs, JAMES GORDON (Ben McKenzie, “Southland,” “The O.C.”) romanticized the city as a glamorous and exciting metropolis where his late father once served as a successful district attorney. Now, two weeks into his new job as a Gotham City detective and engaged to his beloved fiancée, BARBARA KEAN (Erin Richards, “Open Grave,” “Breaking In”), Gordon is living his dream – even as he hopes to restore the city back to the pure version he remembers it was as a kid.

Brave, honest and ready to prove himself, the newly-minted detective is partnered with the brash, but shrewd police legend HARVEY BULLOCK (Donal Logue, “Sons of Anarchy,” “Terriers,” “Vikings,” “Copper”), as the two stumble upon the city’s highest-profile case ever: the murder of local billionaires Thomas and Martha Wayne. At the scene of the crime, Gordon meets the sole survivor: the Waynes’ hauntingly intense 12-year-old son, BRUCE (David Mazouz, “Touch”), toward whom the young detective feels an inexplicable kinship. Moved by the boy’s profound loss, Gordon vows to catch the killer.

As he navigates the often-underhanded politics of Gotham’s criminal justice system, Gordon will confront imposing gang boss FISH MOONEY (Jada Pinkett Smith, “The Matrix” films, “HawthoRNe,” “Collateral”), and many of the characters who will become some of fiction’s most renowned, enduring villains, including a teenaged SELINA KYLE/the future CATWOMAN (acting newcomer Camren Bicondova) and OSWALD COBBLEPOT/THE PENGUIN (Robin Lord Taylor, “The Walking Dead,” “Another Earth”).

Although the crime drama will follow Gordon’s turbulent and singular rise through the Gotham City police department, led by Police Captain SARAH ESSEN (Zabryna Guevara, “Burn Notice”), it also will focus on the unlikely friendship Gordon forms with the young heir to the Wayne fortune, who is being raised by his unflappable butler, ALFRED (Sean Pertwee, “Camelot,” “Elementary”). It is a friendship that will last them all of their lives, playing a crucial role in helping the young boy eventually become the crusader he’s destined to be.

GOTHAM is based upon characters published by DC Comics and is produced by Warner Bros. Television. Executive producer Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist”) wrote the pilot, which will be directed and executive-produced by Emmy Award nominee Danny Cannon (the “CSI” series, “Nikita”).

If you thought we'd seen pretty much everything there is to see from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 with the flood of trailers and TV spots over the past couple of months, then think again. As the superhero sequel gears up to swing into cinemas, Sony has now dropped two clips from the follow-up to the 2012 reboot, which you can check out below after the official synopsis....

We've always known that Spider-Man's most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.

It's great to be Spider-Man. For Peter Parker, there's no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro, Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn, returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

Update - And just in case those weren't enough, here's another clip...

Kafka, B.J. On Monday we brought you a couple of posters for the upcoming live-action Sleeping Beauty retelling Maleficent featuring Angelina Jolie as the Mistress of All Evil, and now Disney has released a batch of new images from the film, which you can check out right here...

From Disney comes “Maleficent”—the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.

Maleficent is directed by Oscar-winning production designer Robert Stromberg (Avatar, Alice in Wonderland) and sees Angelina Jolie joined in the cast by Elle Fanning (Super 8), Sharlto Copley (Elysium), Imelda Staunton (The Pirates! Band of Misfits), Miranda Richardson (The Hours), Juno Temple (The Dark Knight Rises), and Lesley Manville (Romeo and Juliet). The film is set for release on May 30th. Watch the trailer here.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors confirm return for Captain America 3
Back in January it was revealed that Marvel Studios was sufficiently impressed by their work on Captain America: The Winter Soldier to give Community veterans Anthony and Joe Russo the go ahead to start development on a third solo outing for Chris Evans' Man Out of Time, and now Collider has got a few comments from the directing duo during a promotional interview for the upcoming sequel.

"Well now that Kevin [Feige] said it that means we can talk about it, I guess,” states Joe Russo. “That’s great. We’re just in the formative stages of it right now. We just started breaking story with [screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely] and we’re just getting an idea of what we wanna do with it. It’s crazy working on it before the movie even comes out because you want to see what people respond to in the film. You want to get some inspiration from what people like about the film so you go, ‘Okay, this is what we gotta lean into in the next movie’ or ‘this is what we should move away from, this didn’t work so well.’ So we’re just in that phase of breaking story but waiting to see how people respond to the movie."

As yet, Captain America 3 is without a release date, although you'd have to assume that it and Thor 3 will feature alongside Ant-Man as part of Marvel's Phase Three. 2017 would seem like a good bet...

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set for release on March 26th in the UK and April 4th in North America, with returning Marvel stars Chris Evans (Captain America) Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes / The Winter Soldier), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Cobie Smulders (Agent Maria Hill), Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter), Toby Jones (Arnim Zola) and Maximiliano Hernandez (Agent Jasper Sitwell) joined by franchise newcomers Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker) as Sam Wilson / Falcon, Emily VanCamp (Revenge) as Sharon Carter / Agent 13, Frank Grillo (Zero Dark Thirty) as Brock Rumlow / Crossbones, George St-Pierre (Death Warrior) as Georges Batroc / Batroc the Leaper, and Robert Redford (All Is Lost) as Alexander Pierce.

Comic Book Review - East of West #10

Oliver Davis reviews East of West #10...

"Death finally tracks down someone who knows where his son has been hidden, right as the Ranger finds that exact same man. Someone shoots, someone gets shot, and someone dies."

East of West #10's synopsis above hints at a frustrating trait of the series so far: "Death finally tracks down someone." Which roughly translates as: Good grief, this has been going on for a bit. After three months of painfully slow story progression, with Jonathan Hickman introducing new characters and profiling facets of the book's increasingly complex backstory, issue 10 finally gets back to the good stuff.

The opening scene is paced rather well, a three page sequence that ends with Death leaving the Oracle after she had yanked his eye out from its socket. Then comes a two-page spread containing the comic's name and chapter title: 'A Sea of Bones' (the only issue thus far that could also be a nautical-themed porno). Few books devote as much space to itself as East of West, but, once you get past the solipsism, the double-page title does make for a nice piece of grandiosity. It's paced exactly like the opening credits of a television episode.

Death's ocular extraction was the price he paid the Oracle to find the son he never knew he had, commonly referred to by everyone else as The Great Beast, echoing the old adage, 'an eye for...an-important-piece-of-plot-development.' With his skinchanging buddies, Wolf and Crow, in tow, Death tracks down the former's father to a grave where the next piece of the puzzle resides. But it isn't just any grave - keeping with East of West's obsession with the definite article, this is The Grave, where, like, loads of things go to die. It's a lovely idea, but is lost among The Oracles, The Message, The Ham and Cheese Baguette, and all the other things of which there are only one.

The quest to find Death's son is intercut with The Great Beast himself, some pasty kid hooked up to a multitude of cables and wires, living in a virtual reality designed to simultaneously teach and control him. The visual-style is very much informed by Akira's Espers. The Three Horsemen reckon they might have to kill it soon, introducing an element of tension that will hopefully propel the story forward more urgently than in recent months.

The previous issues of East of West haven't been bad, they've just been stagnant. Realms or characters are explored to issue-long length, distracting the story from the main narrative. After three months of waiting, Hickman here gives the central line centre stage again. And - what a surprise - it's the most enjoyable issue in ages.

Game of Thrones showrunners planning for seven seasons

With the premiere of the fourth season of Game of Thrones drawing ever closer, Entertainment Weekly caught up with showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to discuss their plans going forward, with the duo stating that they're aiming to wrap up their adaptation of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire saga in seven seasons.

"It feels like this is the midpoint for us," states Benioff with regards to the upcoming season four. "If we’re going to go seven seasons, which is the plan, season 4 is right down the middle, the pivot point. "I would say it’s the goal we’ve had from the beginning. It was our unstated goal, because to start on a show and say your goal is seven seasons is the height of lunacy. Once we got to the point where we felt like we’re going to be able to tell this tale to its conclusion, that became [an even clearer] goal. Seven gods, seven kingdoms, seven seasons. It feels right to us."

As it happens Martin also intends on releasing seven books in his fantasy epic, although fans are still waiting for the arrival of the sixth book The Winds of Winter, and it seems certain that the show will catch up to and overtake the book series before the seventh novel finally arrives on shelves.

Kevin Smith writing Batman '66 Meets the Green Hornet crossover

Recalling the two part episode "A Piece of the Action" and "Batman's Satisfaction" which brought together Adam West's Batman and Burt Ward's Robin with Van Williams' Green Hornet and Bruce Lee's Kato, DC Comics is set to partner up with Dynamite Entertainment for the comic book crossover Batman '66 Meets the Green Hornet.

The 12-part bi-weekly digital-first series will launch in May, with Kevin Smith set to pen the story alongside Ralph Garman, and Ty Templeton handling the art. The series will serve as a "lost" sequel to the 1967 live-action crossover, with the two crimefighting teams once again squaring off against Colonel Gumm, now promoted to General.

"It's like getting to be 5 years old again and tell stories that you would have made up while watching the show as a kid," Smith tells USA Today. "To be able to do it, man, it really does bring it full circle in a bucket-list kind of fashion."

Batman '66 Meets the Green Hornet will go on sale digitally from May 21st and in print from June 4th.

More directors rumoured for Marvel's Doctor Strange

It looks like Marvel Studios has added a few more potential directors to its shortlist for Doctor Strange, with THR reporter Borys Kit suggesting that Scott Derrickson (Sinister) is now in contention alongside the previously mentioned Mark Andrews (Brave) and Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies).

The latter two were rumoured last month along with Dean Israelite (Welcome to Yesterday) and Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair), although Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige subsequently shot down the shortlist as speculation.

Jonathan Levine would certainly bring an interesting indie sensibility to the Hollywood glamour of the Marvel Cinematic Universe but for me, Nikolaj Arcel seems best fit - if only so that we get to see Mads Mikkelsen joining the MCU.

Who would be your choice to director Doctor Strange? Let us know in the comments below or head on over to The Flickering Myth Forum...

It looks as if Joss Whedon has directed one of the two post credit sequences from the upcoming sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Marvel’s Head of Production Kevin Feige revealed in an interview with Collider that The Avengers director did in fact direct one of the scenes after The Winter Soldier with Joe and Anthony Russo directing the other one. Since The Avengers, Marvel Studios has started adding two sequences during the end credits, and we can expect that Whedon will be directing the one that works hand in hand with The Avengers: Age of Ultron (no spoilers here, but if you're interested, a quick Google search will tell you all you need to know).

Meanwhile, Marvel Studios has also released a new clip for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which sees Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) paying a visit to Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford) to ask a small favour...

With Batman vs. Supermanrumoured to have already commenced filming, it will come as a surprise to hear that the script for the upcoming Man of Steel sequel remains incomplete, with Jeremy Irons - who is set to portray Bruce Wayne's trusted butler and father figure Alfred Pennyworth - telling Absolute Radio that, "The script isn't entirely finished. Irons then went on to offer some praise for Master Bruce, a.k.a. Ben Affleck, who'll be playing The Dark Knight alongside Henry Cavill's Man of Steel in the Zack Snyder-directed sequel: "I think [Affleck's casting] is a wonderful idea. He’s a lovely man and an interesting actor. I’m looking forward to getting to know him. I’ve only met him once."

The film is due to open on May 6th 2016, with a cast that also includes Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Jesse Eisenberg (Lex Luthor), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), and Laurence Fishburne (Perry White).
