Movie Review - Inside Llewyn Davis (2013)

For over three decades, The Coen Brothers have become filmmakers of the highest order, and over the third of those decades, they have seen acclaim continue with the extra bonus of winning Oscars for their superb adaptation of No Country for Old Men. Indeed many of their films can be viewed as "personal" efforts, but with Inside Llewyn Davis, their newest tour-de-force, you can't help but think this is the most personal.

After losing his long-time partner and friend to suicide, folk singer Llewyn Davis faces obscurity. Lost in a sea of stifled creativity, Davis is struggling to adapt to life without his musical soul-mate, and slowly starts in his descent into the abyss, dismantling his life in the process. His family has given up on him (Davis tells his nephew that he is a "bad man"), he's knocked up his friend’s fiancé (a dry Carey Mulligan) and he sprouts profanity at the old couple giving him shelter. Oh, and inadvertently loses their cat too. No matter what he touches, he almost immediately turns it to shit.

Covered in a lush mist of drained grey's and blues from new Coen's DP Bruno Debonnel, Inside Llewyn Davis' bleak look will certainly tickle the taste buds of everyone, but is certainly one that should be seen regardless. At times witty and droll, others heartbreaking and melancholic, the Coen's have again stamped their mercurial talents to another unforgettable film. Delicious in its dialogue and stunning in its look and feel, the siblings took their time finishing this one, meticulously editing and perfecting the wonderful soundtrack with the great T.Bone Burnett, and you can see the care and precision up on the screen. It truly is a wonder of filmmaking, and certainly one of the brothers’ very best.

The film itself is ultimately about finding one self and tackling the journey to it, no matter how far or wide you need to go to find it, if you ever do. Llewyn, so adamant and narrow-minded on the opinion that he should the biggest artist around, waits patiently (though not quietly) for his moment to shine, even as those around him know differently, and won't take no for an answer, even if it means navigating John Goodman's off-kilter jazz musician or singing political space "wonders" with Justin Timberlake. Davis knows nothing else but the sweet melancholy of his music, and without it, he will be just another drop in the ocean.

Davis' performance is undoubtedly the performance of the year (no comparison to Chiwitel Ejiofor at time of writing); while downbeat, gruff and essentially a bit of an arse, his performance is so sincere and genuine, you can't help but feel for Davis in his time of depression, and hope that one day, a true calling will come.

Disappointingly, the great filmmaking and acting on show here has been overlooked during awards season (an Oscar nom for cinematography the only one). Their loss is our gain, and perhaps without the "stigma" of a Best Picture or Actor slathered over its posters and ad's, Inside Llewyn Davis can be everyone's little (big) secret.

Kevin Smith goes into detail about seeing Ben Affleck's Batsuit from batman vs. Superman
At the Golden Globe Awards, Jennifer Garner offered a few words on the redesigned Batsuit set to be worn by her other half Ben Affleck in Batman vs. Superman - stating that it's "unbelievably cool" and "a total reinvention" - and now Affleck's good buddy Kevin Smith has spoken in more depth about the time Zack Snyder showed him the new-look costume. You can read Smith's previous comments here, and this is what he had to say on the latest Fatman on Batman podcast (via CBT)...

"I talked about it on Hollywood Babble-On, but I have seen the suit. I did this Man of Steel Yahoo, fan event when the DVD came out. I was hosting Zack Snyder was there, Amy Adams, we had Henry Cavill from satellite over in the UK, and you know it was all about Man of Steel. And at one point Zack talked a little bit about the future and Batman vs. Superman, but when the show was all done, Zack was all like ‘Kev come here, come here’, and he takes me over to the corner and whips out his phone, and he shows me a picture of Batman. Live action version of Batman. A very familiar Batman, I might add. It didn’t look like any of the cinematic Batmans that have ever gone before. He shows me that picture and behind Batman…Superman in the suit looming in the distance. Both on a roof top kind of thing. It was on a set, a little set they put together for this photo shoot. So I was like ‘Oh my god! Is that the suit?! The suit looks amazing! Did you get people to model it?’ And he goes, ‘That’s your boy.’ And I look closely and it’s Ben Affleck wearing the suit. The suit, it is not mine to spill, in terms of what it looks like, you’ll see it. They’ll tell you when they want you to know, but any Batman fan is going to be f*cking pleased. I’m going to tell you that right now. They gave you the suit you all wanted to see."

What would you like to see from Affleck's Batman vs. Superman Batsuit? Let us know in the comments below...

Batman vs. Superman is set for release on May 6, 2016 with a cast that also includes Henry Cavill (Superman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Diane Lane (Martha Kent) and Lawrence Fishburne (Perry White).

Trailer for Marvel's Avengers Confidential: Black Widow & Punisher animated movie
A trailer has arrived online for Marvel's Avengers Confidential: Black Widow & Punisher, a new animated movie from Marvel and Japanese anime studio Madhouse, the company behind the Iron Man, Wolverine, X-Men and Blade series, as well as last year's Iron Man: Rise of Technovore feature. Take a look at the trailer below after the official synopsis....

“After interfering with a top secret mission, The Punisher is taken into custody by S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and Avenger Black Widow. At the orders of Director Nick Fury, Punisher and Black Widow are sent on a mission to stop Leviathan, a global terrorist organization that plans to sell stolen S.H.I.E.L.D. technology to the highest bidder. Now, the vigilante and spy must work together to prevent this technology from falling into the wrong hands. The fate of the world, and of the Avengers, hangs in the balance.”

2013 wasn't the best of year's for Marvel's animated products, and the fact that Iron Man: Rise of Technovore was so diabolical [read my review here] doesn't exactly fill me with confidence for this. Still, any excuse to see The Punisher in action...

Marvel's Avengers Confidential: Black Widow & Punisher is set for release on March 25th with a voice cast that includes Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter) as Black Widow and Brian Bloom (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3) as The Punisher.

Comic Book Review - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Utrom Empire #1

Chris Cooper reviews the first issue of Utrom Empire, a TMNT mini-series from IDW....

"Intrigue and betrayal abound on Burnow Island! This mini-series takes us to the Technodrome where Krang's plans to destroy the Earth are ramping up. Little does he know that Baxter Stockman plans to harness its power for himself! As the two villains scheme, one imprisoned robots hold the key to success—the Fugitoid! Will he be able to reach out to the Turtles in time? All this plus the long awaited story of the alien Utrom race!"

I really feel for Fugitoid. A genius and hero; not only did he watch his family die after sacrificing himself to save them but he keeps finding himself in dangerous situations. The knowledge he possesses is extremely powerful and he lives in constant fear of being used for evil purposes.

So how does he choose to deal with his predicament? By taking that knowledge away. But being the unlucky so and so the former Professor Honeycutt is he soon finds himself once again in a predicament. This time it's Baxter Stockman who seems intent on involving the 'Fugitive Android' in his nefarious schemes.

The focus of this mini-series isn't just Fugitoid though. It also tells us the tale of the Utroms, the remnants of which are being held in stasis by Krang. He's looking to turn Earth into a new home for his race, but how did they get into this position? We know that the Utroms had a vast empire, and that there plenty of planets none too happy about their scope and presence. But Paul Allor gives us more detail here, as we spy the genesis of a classic set of characters and the steps taken by the Utrom Empire that will ultimately lead to their destruction.

Having previously only seen Krang and a handful of other Utroms it would be easy to assume that they are all war mongers. We soon find out that we would be wrong to tar them all with the same brush however, with my favourite panel of the book (by the returning Andy Kuhn) depicting an Utrom family outing. Much like us they are mainly just living their lives, with little idea as to the machinations fuelling their prosperity.

For those wondering why Donatello is on the cover, we do briefly meet up with our anthropomorphic friend as he begins to unravel some of the secrets of both Krang and Fugitoid.

I don't envy this team. The last TMNT mini-series to be released was the astoundingly good Secret History of the Foot Clan, so they have a lot to live up to. Although I'm not as big a fan of aliens as I am ninjas, I'm happy to say that this is an entertaining read that has my interest. Kuhn's artwork may not be to everyone's taste, but previous experience tells me that once you're accustomed it makes for a rather nice alternative to the detail of Santolouco or softness of Campbell. Allor is clearly enjoying the responsibility of having his own tale to tell, and continues TMNT's knack of introducing old characters in ways that make sense.

Here's hoping this is a sign of things to come and we have another strong series to further bolster my claims that IDW's TMNT is one of the strongest stories on the stands.

Judi Dench the latest name linked to Star Wars: Episode VII

Since the announcement that Disney was developing a new Star Wars trilogy, there hasn’t been a week in which a casting rumour has appeared online.

Well this week is no different, and the latest name linked to Star Wars: Episode VII is national treasure and recent Oscar nominee Judi Dench (Skyfall, Philomena), with the Full of Sith podcast claiming she's set to play Mon Mothma, one of few females in the Star Wars universe and leader of the Rebel Alliance.

Of course, any Star Wars casting reports should be taken with an incredibly large pinch of salt, and this one is almost certainly just speculation, but with filming just around the corner we shouldn't have too long to wait before these rumours come to an end and we start getting some actual news.

Special Features - Does Friday the 13th Need Jason Voorhees?

Luke Owen looks at Jason's possible exclusion from the next Friday the 13th...

It was an exciting time to be a Friday the 13th fan when Paramount announced they had re-acquired the rights to the iconic horror franchise with a view to release the 13th chapter in an already packed 2015. However the excitement became concern when rumours started to bound around that the movie might take on the 'flavour of the month' found footage format. Ironically the concern then became horror as producer Brad Fuller not only confirmed the rumour in an interview, but also mentioned (when asked about Derek Mears) that Jason may not be appearing in the movie at all.

The 13th instalment of Friday the 13th may not include Jason Voorhees. Just let that sink in then ask yourself, 'why?'.

While not 100% official, there is little doubt that the next instalment won't have some involvement from Sean S. Cunningham, the man who created the series back in 1980. Since returning to the series with New Line Cinemas in the early 90s, Cunningham has served as a producer on all Friday the 13th related movies, including Freddy vs. Jason and the remake. So if it is the case that Cunningham is involved with this next entry with Paramount, then we at least can at least take one educated guess as to why Jason might not be in the movie.

Sean S. Cunningham left the Friday the 13th franchise after 1981's Friday the 13th Part 2 in which a fully grown Jason (who didn't drown in Crystal Lake afterall) is a deranged potato sack wearing hermit who stalks would be camp counsellors. Cunningham's original plan for the franchise following the film's release was to make a new film every year that would focus on a new set of characters with a new killer, like a big screen slasher version of The Twilight Zone. Paramount on the other hand saw potential in the Jason character and pursued with him as the main star and without Cunningham's involvement. The third movie, Friday the 13th Part 3 (which was filmed in eye-popping 3D), was a landmark movie in the franchise as it was the debut of Jason's hockey mask, a look that would become synonymous with the character. The following movies were huge successes for Paramount, often being their second biggest earner behind Star Trek, but after the failings of Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, Cunningham acquired the rights to work with New Line Cinemas on the proposed Freddy vs. Jason. When putting together the ninth film, Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday, he made no secret that he was not a fan of the now iconic hockey mask. His one request to the those putting the film together was to "get him out of the mask", feeling he wasn't the Jason he had created (hence why he is barely in the movie). Knowing these two tidbits, it would be safe to assume that Cunningham is perhaps the instigator of Jason's possible exclusion in the upcoming movie.

However, if Cunningham isn't involved with the movie, then let's look at why Paramount would still move forward without Jason. And the answer to that is simple; perhaps they think the franchise has become stale.

Should 2015's Friday the 13th get made with Jason as the lead villain, is there any question on what the plot will be? Teens go to camp, they get cut up by Jason in a hockey mask. Is there really any tension in knowing exactly what is round the corner? Like it or not, this is a franchise that has more or less been the same film over and over again repeated ad nauseam. The only exceptions are the oft mocked Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning and the aforementioned Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday, both of which feature an "impostor" version of Jason Voorhees. While both are much maligned by the horror masses, these are the two movies of the franchise that at least tried something new that wasn't taking him into space. A new Friday the 13th movie without the Jason element hanging over it and controlling its movements allows for some new ideas and also provides the opportunity to realise the notion of making the series a yearly horror anthology tradition.

But with that said, there are four words that surround that last couple of paragraphs: what is the point? In short, why make a Friday the 13th movie without its iconic character?

In 1982 John Carpenter and Debra Hill produced Halloween III: Season of the Witch, a movie that, at the time, was intended to be the first stepping stone in making the Halloween franchise a horror tradition - much like Cunningham wanted to do with Friday the 13th. But while many movie goers rejected the movie for being a bloated, poorly acted mess, the horror masses (and Halloween fans) called for its blood as it was missing - in their minds - a crucial element: Michael Myers. With the movie meeting a frosty reception, the Halloween series was put on ice until 1988 when the franchise was reborn with Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers. Looking back on the movie with the power of hindsight, it seemed silly for Carpenter and Hill to make a Halloween movie without The Shape, but at the time it probably felt like the right thing to do given they'd killed the character in the previous movie. They would have had no idea that a Michael Myer-less Halloween movie would receive such a negative reaction given that at the time of release he was not the face of the franchise. Now referred to as "the one without Michael", Halloween III: Season of the Witch is, like the Jason-less Friday the 13th's, universally hated by all apart from those who appreciate it for what it was trying to do.

Could 2015's Friday the 13th be the franchise's Season of the Witch?

The difference between Halloween III: Season of the Witch and a Friday the 13th without Jason is that in 2014, the most recognisable elements of Friday the 13th are Jason and his hockey mask. Even people who have never seen a Friday the 13th movie know who Jason Voorhees is because he is such a big part of the pop culture zeitgeist and to leave him off the show screams of idiocy. It would be like making a James Bond movie without James Bond, Godzilla without Godzilla, The Muppets without Kermit the Frog. You could do all of those and they would certainly be interesting as well as creatively challenging for those involved, but they'd ultimately be pointless. The fans going to see those movies are looking to see their iconic character. There is nothing wrong with change and change should be embraced, but the change needs to have a good reason behind it.

Paramount need to realise that Jason is the face of Friday the 13th and next year marks the 35th anniversary of that. Pandora's box has been opened and it cannot be closed. Making the new Friday the 13th movie found footage is bad enough, but to not have Jason in it would be dumber than putting him in space.

Kraken Releasing announce Godzilla vs. Hedorah, Godzilla vs. Gigan and Ebirah, Horror of the Deep coming to DVD and Blu-Ray

Not only will we be treated to Godzilla's return to the big screen in Gareth Edwards American reboot, but distribution company Kraken Releasing will celebrating the King of the Monster's 60th birthday by putting out DVD and Blu-Ray releases of Godzilla vs. Hedorah, Godzilla vs. Gigan and Ebirah, Horror of the Deep.

The movies will be presented in both their the original Japanese forms as well as their English dubs.

Here's the synopsis from the press release...

The fun begins as 1971’s GODZILLA VS HEDORAH (ゴジラ対ヘドラ, Gojira Tai Hedora), released theatrically in the U.S in 1972 as GODZILLA VS THE SMOG MONSTER, pits Godzilla against the forces of pollution in the form of a constantly mutating, acid-spewing behemoth from outer space. With eye-popping 1970’s “mod” costumes, hairstyles and psychedelic visuals that include conventional cel animation alongside the special effects by Teruyoshi Nakano, GODZILLA VS HEDORAH director Yoshimitsu Banno’s ecologically focused take on the world’s greatest monster is easily one of the most unique films in the series and required viewing for any giant monster fan or cult film enthusiast.

What happens when three major movie monsters slam dance in the South Seas? The answer is 1966’s EBIRAH: HORROR OF THE DEEP (ゴジラ・エビラ・モスラ 南海の大決闘, Gojira Ebira Mosura Nankai no Daikettoo), originally released in the U.S. in 1968 under the title GODZILLA VS THE SEA MONSTER. Pairing Godzilla and another of Toho’s most popular kaiju, the giant moth Mothra, against a wide variety of adversaries, including the titular sea monster, giant birds and a mysterious terrorist organization, the wet and wild widescreen spectacular was directed by Jun Fukuda.

Finally, 1972’s GODZILLA VS GIGAN (地球攻撃命令 ゴジラ対ガイガン, Chikyuu Kogeki Meirei Gojira Tai Gaigan) ups the giant monster ante once again with a series of tag team battles featuring four classic kaiju. Released theatrically in the United States in 1977 as GODZILLA ON MONSTER ISLAND and again directed by Jun Fukuda with special effects by Teruyoshi Nakano, the film unites Godzilla and spiny ally Anguirus against two of the series’ most popular opponents: the three headed monster King Ghidorah and the new alien cyborg Gigan.

They might not be the most loved movies of the monster's illustrious history, but Godzilla fans will be pleased to see more of the back catalogue being released outside of Japan.

Will you be picking these titles up? Which Godzilla movies do you want to see released next?

Possible Batman vs. Superman plot details surface

We've heard quite a bit about Ben Affleck's Batsuit today (read Jennifer Garner's thoughts here and Kevin Smith's reactions here), but with the news that Batman vs. Superman has been pushed back to 2016, we can expect more and more rumours to come out about the Man of Steel sequel.

Such rumours are once again out and about. As always, take these with a pinch of salt.

So, some poster on a forum claimed to have sources within the art department of Warner Bros. who were working on the film and have since been fired. Clearly curious, the 'scoopers' at Latino-Review did their own research into the story and discovered while no one was fired, there were some union contractors who have "moved on" from the project due to its new release date.

Got your pinch of salt ready?
  • The villians are Lex Luthor and Metallo.
  • Batman forms a UN type deal to stop Superman from destroying another city.
  • Aquaman is in it, but not called Aquaman. He’s there because the world engine in the ocean did something to the fish.
  • Wonder Woman poses as a Wayne Enterprises investor to retrieve an item that belongs to her people.
  • Lex Luthor is in the shadows a lot, a manipulator. Not much face time with Superman.
  • Robin betrayed Batman at some point, leading to a falling out between them.
  • The Batcave was super cool looking, and the mobile looked similar to Tim Burton’s.
  • Lois is investigating Lex.
  • Metallo “kills” Clark.
  • The Daily Planet is bought by Lex Luthor for PR purposes.
  • At the end Superman is living in exile, and the Justice League is a government approved superhero team.
We at Flickering Myth cannot stress enough that this is all rumour at present and the original posting in question is full of "Cover Your Arse" reporting (read Gary Collinson's breakdown here). But, if true, what do we think of the possible plot for Batman vs. Superman? Let us know in the comments below...

Comic Book Review - Aphrodite IX: The Hidden Files #1
"PEEK INTO THE PROPRIETARY BLACK BOX OF APHRODITE’S MIND! The cybernetic assassin Aphrodite IX has survived the rise and fall of countless civilizations. What sacrifices and tragedies has she seen that have been erased from her memory?"

The Hidden Files #1 should be entitled “Everything you wanted to know about the Aphrodite IX universe (but where too afraid to ask)”, for that is what this is, and it's a rather splendid collection of lore and art related to A9 from Top Cow Productions and of course Image.

There isn’t much of a “story” to this issue to be brutally honest, but as you quickly realise this fact you’re being treated to numerous pictures beautifully drawn version of our favourite enhanced killing machine and the world she occupies, along with the history that binds them together.

Other than admiring the artistic talents of Stjepan Sejic (Witchblade) - and he is certainly skilled in his art as he provides us with numerous styles of the Aphrodite “sisters” along with the other races and landscapes - it’s quite clearly that both Matt Hawkins (Think Tank) and Ryan Cady (A Voice in the Dark) haven’t sat down and said, “We’ll let the nimble and quite attractive woman sell this alone”. Along with the art, we're given stats from Bench Press strength to the real science behind Bone Strength; nerdgasams all around people.  A lot of work is being put into Aphrodite IX and this issue alone shows you that.

Two more join Zoe Saldana in NBC's Rosemary's Baby miniseries

Earlier this month, it was announced that Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Star Trek Into Darkness) will take on the lead in NBC’s new 4-hour miniseries adaptation of Rosemary’s Baby and now more casting news has arrived.

Character actor and all-round good bloke Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter, Awake) has been joined the project as sinister neighbour and all-round creepy bloke Roman Castevet, while Patrick J. Adams (Suits) will take on the role of Saldana’s husband in the miniseries.

Roman Polanski's 1968 film is widely - and rightly - considered to be a horror classic, so NBC has a job on its hands if it is to live up to the original.

Comic Book Review - Amazing X-Men #3"BEAST UNLEASHED! Dr. McCoy is pushed over the edge and gives into his savage side like never before!  The X-Men, split between heaven and hell, are in way over their heads! Can they get to Nightcrawler before evil Azazel does?"

This series hasn’t really lived up to all of the hype and expectation that came with it near the end of 2013. When you heard the team of Jason Aaron and Ed McGuinness were teaming up for “The Quest for Nightcrawler”, immediately fan boys everywhere were excited at the fact of Nightcrawler’s return.

Considering last issue barely had two panels of the little blue fur-ball, it was somewhat of a let down. Here we are in issue #3, and while there is a lot more blue fur in this issue (mainly with the story revolving around Henry “The Beast” McCoy), it still feels flat, and oddly child like for a title with “X” in it.

This issue, again, seems to be building up to something, however with Wolverine and Northstar noticeably absent in this issue, it’s very difficult to see how the stories will intertwine, and all of the heroes, and villains eventually battle it out (presumably in issue#5).

Unfortunately this series has become somewhat of a let down, as I was hoping for something a bit more awe inspiring for Nightcrawler’s return, and instead this feels more like an experience in patience waiting for the payoff.

Amazon picks up Nicolas Winding Refn's Barbarella TV series
Last year came word about a possible Barbarella TV series, with Drive and Only God Forgives director Nicolas Winding Refn attached to produce. Since then, we've heard nothing about the project, but it's now been reported that Amazon has picked up the project for a pilot order.

Whereas previously it was stated that Refn would also direct the pilot, he has now dropped out, choosing instead to serve as executive producer. The series is yet to find a showrunner or any official cast members but surely no one can match the sex appeal and vigour of Jane Fonda in the original 1968 movie!

Are you looking forward to the Barbarella series, and who would you like to see in the role? Let us know in the comments below...

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit London Press Conference Report

Luke Graham reports from the London press conference for Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit...

On Monday, the creative team behind Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit gathered in London to talk about this new reimagining of the classic Tom Clancy character. Consisting of producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and David Barron, actors Chris Pine and Keira Knightley (respectively playing Jack Ryan and love interest Cathy Muller) and director Kenneth Branagh (who also plays the villain, Viktor Cherevin), below is a few choice quotes from the conference...

On the decision to make the movie:

Lorenzo: The opportunity we had was we were telling an origin story (for Jack Ryan) which was something that had never been done before, and so you were able to see a more complete character study. You rarely see a movie where the lead character probably faces the three or four most seminal moments of his life.

Kenneth: I just couldn’t put the script down; it was as simple as that.

Chris: I like the idea of (Jack Ryan) being a reluctant hero being compelled to serve from something deep within himself.

Keira: When I finished doing Anna Karenina I realized I’d been pretty much playing character that died or something horrendous happens to them for about the last five years so I fancied doing something fun. I really enjoyed the script, I couldn’t put it down; it was a real page-turner, and then there was Ken and Ken basically said “ah go on, do it!”

On how the film ties into the books:

Lorenzo: We looked at this as an opportunity to mine from all the books. Now having done it with Chris we are at a younger phase than where most of the books are at so we sort of trapped ourselves into not being part of the books at the moment, but what we’ve been able to do is remain true to the books by taking all these pieces of information and putting them into one movie.

Kenneth: I’m happy we’re out in the real world and not telling a specific (book’s story).

On the character of Jack Ryan and what makes him different from James Bond and Jason Bourne:

Chris: I like the fact that he seems a bit more real and grounded then the other action heroes. There’s no Q, there’s no fancy gadgets and he’s not in a fancy suit with Russian supermodels or whatever. He’s monogamous, simple, for all his complexity and intelligence, he’s a man. I fought for this for a long time with Ken, but I wanted him to have a sort of crutch, something to make him brooding and angstful, but really he’s a simple guy who wants to serve and is compelled to serve.

On the villain, Viktor Chervin:

Kenneth: Our intention was to tell a story of one fictional Russian oligarch with a specific, personal biography and history, that was not trying to at a stroke say this is what all wealthy Russians are like.

Lorenzo: A hero is measured by his foe. He is a fiction character, but if you think about the oligarchs, they have such an enormous amount of wealth and sense of entitlement that makes (Viktor) a worthy foe.

On what it was like to work with sexy co-star Kevin Costner (it was a strange conference):

Chris: Kevin Costner is sexy, that’s for sure. When we were doing press in LA, he rolled up in cowboy boots, a vest and sunglasses!

Lorenzo: As a person and as an actor, he commits so utterly and committed to his point of view, and so I think one the things that endears him to us is that he wears it on his sleeve. Having Kevin in this film was fantastic for us, because it’s not the traditional younger/older man relationship because he’s not sitting behind a desk, so you needed a guy like Kevin to go out into the field and shoot someone... and let the audience believe that character is capable of it.

Keira: Absolutely lovely, very sexy! I only did one scene with him and I wish I’d done more, he was a total delight.

David: Even I found him sexy! I can’t tell you much more than that. (This had the audience laughing in stitches)

From the conference, I got the impression that the creative team felt very passionate about the film, and had tried to make a modern, grounded thriller.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is released Friday in the UK, and is already out in the US.

Quentin Tarantino shelves The Hateful Eight after script leak
Earlier this month it was revealed that Quentin Tarantino was heading back to the Western genre for his next film, following up Django Unchained with a new project entitled The Hateful Eight, but it seems that Tarantino has decided to shelve those plans, owing to a leak of his latest script.

"I’m very, very depressed," Tarantino told Deadline. "I finished a script, a first draft, and I didn’t mean to shoot it until next winter, a year from now. I gave it to six people, and apparently it’s gotten out today. I gave it to one of the producers on Django Unchained, Reggie Hudlin, and he let an agent come to his house and read it. That’s a betrayal, but not crippling because the agent didn’t end up with the script. There is an ugly maliciousness to the rest of it. I gave it to three actors: Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern, Tim Roth. The one I know didn’t do this is Tim Roth. One of the others let their agent read it, and that agent has now passed it on to everyone in Hollywood. I don’t know how these fucking agents work, but I’m not making this next. I’m going to publish it, and that’s it for now. I give it out to six people, and if I can’t trust them to that degree, then I have no desire to make it. I’ll publish it. I’m done. I’ll move on to the next thing. I’ve got 10 more where that came from."

Tarantino then went to to reveal that he could still revisit the script, although it's unlikely to be his next project: "I could totally change my mind; I own the fucking thing. But I can tell you, it’s not going to be the next thing I do. It’s my baby, and if the muse calls me later to do it, we’ll do it. I was thinking about the idea of maybe publishing it before I made it, but now that deal happens for sure, and I’m not doing it next. The idea was, I was going to write two scripts. I wasn’t going to shoot the Western until next winter, and I have been full of piss and vinegar about the other one. So now I’ll do that one."
