There's little doubt that Prometheus was one of the most hotly-anticipated movies of the summer, and while Ridley Scott's long-awaited return to the sci-fi genre didn't quite manage to live up to its lofty expectations, 20th Century Fox are certainly happy with the box-office success of the [not an] Alien prequel. So much so that the studio has now given the green light to the rumoured sequel, with The Hollywood Reporter announcing that Fox and Scott are now actively working on the follow-up and both Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace are signed on to reprise their roles.

Due to potential scheduling conflicts with co-writer Damon Lindelof, Fox is also said to be talking to new writers in order to develop the sequel in time for a release in 2014 or 2015. Scott is currently directing The Counselor with Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt, which is due for release next year, so if the Prometheus sequel is put on the fast track and turns out to be his next project, this surely raises questions over the status of his 'Untitled Blade Runner Project'.

With this announcement, Prometheus becomes the latest in an ever-expanding list of this year's releases to have a sequel already in development: Disney and Marvel Studios have confirmed that Earth's Mightiest Heroes will return in The Avengers 2 (not to mention the solo movies Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier); Sony has sequels to The Amazing Spider-Man, Men in Black 3 and 21 Jump Street on its upcoming slate; Channing Tatum also looks set to appear in a follow-up to Magic Mike for Warner Bros.; and Universal is moving forward on a sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman (which will presumably see a new director taking over from Rupert Sanders after his naughty shenanigans with Kristen Stewart).
