After reprising the roles of the elder Professor X and Magneto for a brief post-credits appearance in The Wolverine, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are set to return to the X-Men franchise full-time next year as part of Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past, and the two actors have been speaking to The Wall Street Journal about working with their younger incarnations, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, on the time-travelling sequel.

"James and I come not just face-to-face, but nose to nose almost," said Stewart, referring to the scene between himself and McAvoy which we glimpsed in the trailer. "There was a certain happy charm about it, in that, when we shot that scene, it was James’ first day of work and it was my last day. So I was saying goodbye and he was saying hello. James has seen everything I have done and I’ve seen everything he has done. He is illustrating a time in Charles Xavier’s life which was very different from the time that I’ve been inhabiting in the previous three movies and we just let that play out. I think we’d both been looking forward to doing that scene immensely."

"I think he made it clear that he wanted to be his own Magneto and that suits the nature of the story and his part in it" said McKellen, when asked if he'd spoken to Fassbender about syncing up their performances as Magneto. "And, Bryan Singer clearly doesn’t mind that Fassbender and I don’t look much like each other, although they have put out a poster where our faces are blended and you do a double take and think, 'oh, my goodness, I didn’t know I was that good looking', and then realise the bit that’s good looking is not me but Fassbender."

And as for X-Men: Apocalypse, both stars are uncertain about whether they'll be asked to return for the 2016 sequel, or if Bryan Singer intends on taking things forward with the younger generation: "I don’t know if Ian knows anything about this, but I know nothing about it. Another X-Men movie has been announced and I said 'yes, yes, yes, it opens in May' and they say 'no, no, no, not that one, the one after," revealed Stewart, with McKellen adding: "I know nothing about it, which probably means we're not in it."

Meanwhile, shifting back to X-Men: Days of Future Past, we've also got a couple of new images from the film featuring the returning Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, along with Omar Sy (The Intouchables) as Bishop; check them out here courtesy of Studio Cine Live...

X-Men: Days of Future Past is set for release on May 23rd 2014 with a cast that also includes X-Men veterans Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Lucas Till (Havok), Halle Berry (Storm), Anna Paquin (Rogue), Ellen Page (Kitty Pryde), Shawn Ashmore (Iceman) and Daniel Cudmore (Colossus) alongside X-Men newcomers Evan Peters (American Horror Story) as Quicksilver, Booboo Stewart (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) as Warpath, Fan Binbing (Iron Man 3) as Blink, Adam Canto (The Following) as Sunspot, Josh Helman (Mad Mad: Fury Road) as William Stryker, and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) as Bolivar Trask.
