UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 13th to Sunday 15th December 2013....

A year to the weekend that Peter Jackson first took us back to Middle-earth with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the second chapter of his three-part prequel to The Lord of the Rings has topped the UK box office chart, which won't really come as a surprise to anyone.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug earned £9,325,626 over the weekend to knock Frozen into second, and while that's certainly a strong debut, it's almost £2.3 million down from An Unexpected Journey. Meanwhile, the only other new release to crack the top ten was the live cinema relay of the Met Opera's Falstaff, which earned a decent £224,763.
