Frozen dethrones The Hunger Games: Catching Fire at the UK box office

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 6th to Sunday 8th December 2013....

After two weeks atop the UK box office chart, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has been knocked down to second place, with Disney's latest CG-animated offering Frozen pulling in £4,704,940 to take first place in its opening weekend.

In addition to Frozen, two other new arrivals managed to debut in the top ten, with the Jason Statham / James Franco action thriller Homefront placing fifth with £440,306 and Alexander Payne's Nebraska sneaking into the chart in tenth place with an opening weekend of £151,332.

Expect a new face at the top of the chart this coming weekend as Peter Jackson takes us back to Middle-earth for the second instalment in his Hobbit trilogy, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (cert. 12A) [read our review here], while the only other wide release is The Christmas Candle (cert. U), which features Hans Matheson, Samantha Barks, Lesley Manville, Sylvester McCoy, James Cosmo and Susan Boyle.
