Awards season got underway for another year last night as the winners of the 23rd annual IFP Gotham Independent Film Awards were announced in New York City, with the Coen brothers Inside Llewyn Davis taking home the Best Feature gong against fellow nominees 12 Years a Slave, Ain't Them Bodies Saints, Before Midnight and Upstream Color.
Fruitvale Station picked up two honours - Breakthrough Director for Ryan Coogler and Breakthrough Actor for Michael B. Jordan - while Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) and Brie Larson (Short Term 12) were successful in the inaugural Best Actor and Best Actress categories, and The Act of Killing was named Best Documentary. Meanwhile, there were also tribute awards for New York City film commissioner Katherine Oliver, director Richard Linklater (Before Midnight), actor Forest Whitaker (The Butler) and the late James Gandolfini (The Sopranos).
