UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th November 2013....

After two weekends atop the chart, Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity was knocked down to second this past week as the Jennifer Lawrence-headlined The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ignited the UK box office with a hefty £12,189,733 opening weekend (including £2.07 million in previews). This is a big improvement on the original, with The Hunger Games debuting with £4.9 million, and the third biggest opening of 2013 after fellow sequels Despicable Me 2 (£14.8 million) and Iron Man 3 (£13.7 million).
Catching Fire wasn't the only winner this past weekend, with Doctor Who's 50th Anniversary Special 'The Day of the Doctor' enjoying a solid £1,798,629 haul - certainly impressive considering the majority of this came from a single 3D screening across 440 venues on Saturday evening. Meanwhile, two other newcomers landed in the top ten, with the Robert De Niro mob comedy The Family opening in ninth with £444,659, followed by violinist Andre Rieu's latest concert film Home for Christmas 2013 in ninth with £290,173.
