The Best Man Holiday getting a sequel

The risk of making a sequel to The Best Man has paid off in a big way, with The Best Man Holiday enjoying a $30 million plus domestic take over the weekend on a $17 million budget.  Considering The Best Man is something with a fanbase so small that it can't even really even be described as a cult classic, this is certainly a win for the studio. and  it's no surprise that Deadline is reporting that Malcolm D. Lee is in negotiations to write, direct, and produce a second sequel for Universal.

So, The Best Man will become a trilogy, and maybe even a franchise.  There 's no word yet on returning cast members for the third movie, but there doesn't seem to be any contractual obligations to come back, because who would think to make a multi-picture deal when making The Best Man Holiday?  Theoretically, Terrence Howard could find himself replaced again due to contract disputes, the poor guy. Lee is currently working on an untitled project for Fox Searchlight but is expected to begin work on The Best Man Holiday sequel soon.

I've heard some decent things about The Best Man Holiday and any film featuring a predominantly black cast that's above a Tyler Perry movie I'm genuinely happy to see doing well.  Some of these actors need paychecks and as long as the movies stay good, keep it going until you get to The Best Man Funeral...
