Entertainment Weekly has revealed the first images from NBC's upcoming thriller series Hannibal, which is based upon novelist Thomas Harris' cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter and sees Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale, The Hunt) stepping into the role previously portrayed on screen by Brian Cox (Manhunter), Gaspard Ulliel (Hannibal Rising) and - most famously - Anthony Hopkins, who won an Academy Award for The Silence of the Lambs before reprising the part a decade later for Hannibal.

The TV series has been developed by Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Mockingbird Lane), with David Slade (30 Days of Night, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) directing the pilot. Mads Mikkelsen is joined in the cast by English actor Hugh Dancy (Martha Marcy May Marlene) as Special Agent Will Graham, alongside Laurence Fishburne (Man of Steel), Caroline Dhavernas (Devil), Hettienne Park (Young Adult) and Lara Jean Chorostecki (Camelot). Here's the official synopsis:

"Will Graham is a gifted criminal profiler who is on the hunt for a serial killer with the FBI. Graham’s unique way of thinking gives him the astonishing ability to empathize with anyone – even psychopaths. He seems to know what makes them tick. But when the mind of the twisted killer he’s pursuing is too complicated for even Will to comprehend, he enlists the help of Dr. Lecter, one of the premier psychiatric minds in the country. Armed with the uncanny expertise of the brilliant doctor, Will and Hannibal (known as a serial killer only to the audience) form a brilliant partnership and it seems there’s no villain they can’t catch. If Will only knew…"

Hannibal is set to premiere on NBC in the States on March 12th, 2013.
