UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 6th to Sunday 8th September 2013...
Richard Curtis enjoyed his first box office number one since 2003's Love Actually this past weekend, with his latest film About Time edging out the Vin Diesel sci-fi action sequel Riddick to take top spot with £1,761,079 - although this debut is actually down on Curtis' previous effort The Boat That Rocked, which pulled in £1.8 million when it opened in second place behind Monsters vs. Aliens back in April 2009.
With a gap of nine years between instalments, Riddick enjoyed a decent enough £1,415,141 opening weekend in second place, up almost £400k on 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick (which had a production budget night on three times the size of the threequel), while One Direction: This Is Us was the only other release to break seven figures, adding another £1.12 million to leave the Morgan Spurlock-directed concert film / music documentary just shy of £6 million after two weekends. However, once again the real winner was Despicable Me 2, with the CG-animated sequel climbing one spot to eighth and becoming the first film to pass £45 million here in the UK this year.
