Deadline has revealed that Syfy has placed a pilot order for a new drama based upon Terry Gilliam's 1995 sci-fi Twelve Monkeys, which starred Bruce Willis as a convicted criminal sent back in time to prevent the a virus from decimating the population. The film was based upon the 1962 short La Jetee, and also starred Brad Pitt, Madeleine Stowe, Christopher Plummer and David Morse.
The 60 minute pilot has been written by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett (Terra Nova), with Charles Roven (The Dark Knight Trilogy) and Richard Suckle (American Hustle) serving as executive producers. Filming on the pilot is expected to get underway in November. 12 Monkeys becomes the second consecutive pilot based upon a movie for Syfy, with the network giving the green light last month to Dominion, a small screen spin-off of the 2010 fantasy horror Legion from director Scott Stewart.
