In a preview of their next issue, Empire have uploaded a whole bunch of new images from Marvel's next big superhero offering, Thor: The Dark World. They use the subline "Things go from bad to Norse" in the article for extra pun points.
You can see the stills below, with a brief description (which is mostly speculation on our part) of each. Here's the official synopsis:
"Thor: The Dark World continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel's "Thor" and "Marvel's The Avengers," Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos...but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all."
The last time we saw Loki (Tom Hiddleston), he'd been 'SMASHED' by The Hulk. Presumably he's still in the doghouse for trying to enslave the human race here...
Here's an Asgardian-upped Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) walking with Frigga (Renne Russo), perhaps into battle (see unsheathed blade)...
A broody looking Thor (Chris Hemsworth). Probably because he's had to "sacrifice everything to save us all"...
This could be Malektih the Accursed (Christopher Eccleston), the movie's chief antagonist. In the comics, he's the ruler of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim, which might be the rather gloomy looking place he's in below. His Michael Myers-esque face is in fact a mask, as can be seen in later photos. Pretty scary...
Perhaps the aforementioned Dark Elves' spaceships. Could this mean a dogfight in the stars?
The figures of Thor and Foster against a painterly-looking Asgard. It has the appearance of the beautiful mattes that used to be the backdrops of many a science fiction and fantasy film before CGI really took off. There's a Star Wars Episode I-III vibe about this image, particularly as knowing one of those characters is played by Portman...
Thor and Heimdall (Idris Elba) talk in what seems to be an Asgardian pub. Considering the Norse Gods' fondness for drink and battle, a few tavern scenes could provide some wonderful moments. This one, however, appears more pensive. Perhaps Thor getting advice...
The below image is an over-the-shoulder shot of a tall warrior made out of rock. Thor has reason to be cocky. In the trailer, he smashes him to bits with ease...
The below appears to be Thor standing in the same place, revealed here to be an encampment of sorts, as above...
A breathtaking long shot of Asgard...
Loki, seemingly unguarded, in a public place around other Asgardians. Are they that quick to forgive?
Loki and Thor in a foreboding shot before a gathering storm. The dynamic between the two looks set to be the heart of the film, with Thor enlisting Loki's help to defeat the big bad...
Malekith, again, though this time without his mask. This is what the Dark Elves really look like...
Dr. Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård, looking like his bottom and top halves have been taken from different scenes) and Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) - Jane Foster's research team from the first film - are standing somewhere in England, presumably London. That's a good ol'jam sandwich police car behind them. Which probably means the Capital is getting destroyed again. How many times does that make it this year?...
Director Alan Taylor points at something while filming...
Thor and his (Al)father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins)...
Perhaps Malekith again, although he looks considerably paler here...
Thor: The Dark World is directed by Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones) and sees returning Thor stars Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Natalie Portman (Jane Foster), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Anthony Hopkins (Odin), Rene Russo (Frigga), Stellan Skarsgård (Erik Selvig), Idris Elba (Heimdall), Ray Stevenson, (Volstagg) Jaimie Alexander (Lady Sif), Tadanobu Asano (Hogun) and Kat Dennings (Darcy Lewis) joined by Marvel newcomers Zachary Levi (Chuck) as Fandral, Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who) as Malekith the Accursed, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) as Algrim the Strong / Kurse.
