In news that has had me scratching my head as much as the Son of Coul's return, Channel 4 has stole in and picked up the rights to broadcast Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the UK.

As reported by Screen International, the free UK channel managed to secure the rights despite competition from moneybags broadcaster SKY.

The show is produced ABC, Marvel's TV arm and Mutant Enemy (the production company run by Executive Producer Joss Whedon), showcasing the more human side of the organisation led by Nick Fury in the The Avengers and Marvel film series.

Starring Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, who assembles a a small, highly select of agents to "protect the ordinary from the extraordinary", the acquisition of the show is quite the coup for Channel 4.

The series is due to premier on the channel this Autumn, hopefully not too long after the US start of the show, on 24th September. Whedon, who directed The Avengers (or Avengers Assemble for us UK folks), co-wrote and directed the pilot. Fingers crossed all goes well and we aren't just left waiting for Tony Stark to turn up.
