UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 16th - Sunday 18th August 2013...
It might not have had the same kind of drawing power as Iron Man 3, Man of Steel or even The Wolverine, but Universal's Kick-Ass 2 managed to top the box office chart here in the UK in its opening weekend, with the Jeff Wadlow-directed superhero sequel pulling in £2,482,187 including Wednesday and Thursday previews to claim first place. It is however down on Matthew Vaughn's original, with Kick-Ass debuting to £3.88 million back in March 2010.
In second place this past weekend was Disney's non-Pixar Cars spin-off Planes, which shrugged aside mixed reviews to earn £1,735,940 and should go on to collect a respectable enough tally thanks to a lack of animated competition, and the fact that the school holidays are still in full swing. Meanwhile, the Denzel Washington / Mark Wahlberg action comedy 2 Guns was only other newcomer to make an impact, opening in third with £1,423,738, while down at the bottom 2013's highest-grossing UK release Despicable Me 2 reentered the chart in its seventh week, adding another £768k to its impressive haul.
