Celebrated American novelist and screenwriter Elmore Leonard has died aged 87 after complications from a stroke he suffered last month. A statement on his official website revealed that Leonard "passed away this morning at 7.15 AM at home surrounded by his loving family."

Born in New Orleans in 1925, Leonard began his career as a writer penning Western short stories in the 1950s, before turning his attention to crime fiction the following decade. During his career he penned 45 novels, with many of his tales adapted for the screen, including Hombre, The Big Bounce, The Tall T, 3:10 to Yuma, Mr. Majestyk, Out of Sight, Get Shorty, Be Cool, Rum Punch (filmed as Jackie Brown), Killshot and the FX television series Justified, on which he also served as executive producer.

Flickering Myth would like to pass on our condolences to Mr. Leonard's family and friends at this sad time.
