With his second film Elysium just opening in the States this past Friday, South African filmmaker Neill Blomkamp is wasting little time getting back behind the camera, with Sony announcing today the sci-fi comedy Chappie will shoot this Fall.
According to the official press release, "Chappie tells the story of a robot imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes. The film will star Sharlto Copley as the voice of Chappie, with Ninja and Yolandi Visser, voices of the South African Zef counter-culture movement and members of rap-rave duo Die Antwoord, as the two gangsters."
Chappie has been written by Blomkamp and District 9 co-writer Terri Tatchell, while Dev Patel (The Last Airbender) is also attached to star as the human lead. The film is currently slated for release next year.
