UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th August 2013...
It's all change at the top of the UK box office chart this week, with Universal's live-action / CG hybrid family sequel The Smurfs 2 fending off competition from fellow newcomers The Heat and The Conjuring to take first place with £3,220,911, including Wednesday and Thursday previews. That's just over half a million less than its predecessor, with The Smurfs debuting in second place back in 2011 with £3.8 million, which also included two days of previews.
Taking second place this week is the Sandra Bullock / Melissa McCarthy buddy cop comedy The Heat, which opened with £2,500,522 including two days of preview screenings, followed by horror The Conjuring, which conjured up a decent £2,156,124 to claim third ahead of last week's top film The Wolverine. Further down the chart, the action comedy RED 2 debuted in seventh, with the sequel amassing £1,023,349, while the latest collaboration between director Nicolas Winding Refn and star Ryan Gosling, Only God Forgives, finished up in ninth with an opening weekend of £465,917.
