“Mission: Accepted” tweeted screenwriter and director Christopher McQuarrie at 19.41 GMT on August 5th 2013... and so the fifth film in the Mission: Impossible series gets its director and my most anticipated film of 2015 (we assume) gets a little more real.

What does this mean for M:I fans? It means Cruise has picked a film maker he has worked with several time before and shows his commitment to ensuring each M:I film has a distinctive look and is not just another carbon copy of other action films. McQuarrie was rumoured to be given director duties shortly after Jack Reacher was released last December and I saw that as a fantastic opportunity to build on the superbly staged action set pieces McQuarrie and Cruise delivered in that low key 70’s style thriller... but this time travel the globe with a $150 million budget!

With Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) writing, Cruise starring and already scouting for locations, J.J. Abrams (Star Trek Into Darkness) producing, and now McQuarrie directing, Mission: Impossible 5 is taking shape very nicely. The only question remains is: HOW will they ever top the Burj Khalifa sequence from the last film?

I’ll be first in the queue to find out...
