UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 26th - Sunday 28th June 2013...

20th Century Fox's latest X-Men offering The Wolverine opened atop the UK box office chart this past weekend, however it seems that audiences are still suffering an X-Men Origins: Wolverine hangover, with the latest film's haul of £4,694,092 (including Thursday previews) the lowest UK start from an X-Men movie. For comparison, its 2009 predecessor amassed £6.6 million, while 2011's X-Men: First Class debuted with £5.4 million and 2000's X-Men earned £4.7 million. It's also less than half of the openings recorded by this year's two previous superhero movies, with Iron Man 3 pulling in £13.7 million and Man of Steel earning £11.2 million. Still, globally, the James Mangold-directed solo sequel has already pulled in $150 million from a $120 million budget, although it has its work cut out if its to avoid becoming the lowest-grossing instalment in Fox's mutant franchise (currently the original X-Men on $296.3 million).

With the school holidays now in full swing, Pixar's Monsters University enjoyed a healthy third-weekend of £3.1 million (up £300k from last weekend) and has now grossed £15.5 million here in the UK to date, while rival CG animation Despicable Me 2 pushed its 5 week haul to an impressive £34.7 million. Meanwhile, the only other film to break seven figures was Edgar Wright's The World's End in fourth, while only one other newcomer managed to make an impact in the top ten, with Noah Baumbach's acclaimed Frances Ha debuting in ninth with £150,689.
