Commenting on the Critics with Simon Columb....

Tanya Ghahremani writes for Complex on the new role for Ron Weasley, a.k.a. Rupert Grint:

Rupert Grint
We knew behind those bright eyes there lied a darkness deep down. According to The Wrap, Harry Potter star Ron Weasley, known to us muggles as Rupert Grint, is set to make his stage debut on London's West End in a revival of the classic Jez Butterworth play Mojo. As for his role, he'll be playing a drug-addicted gangster, which is obviously the most fitting role ever for him. No one who owns their own ice cream truck is innocent!"

In a week whereby Sylvester Stallone is due to be reprise the role of Rocky for spin-off Creed and Hugh Jackman storms the box-office, again, as Logan in The Wolverine, it is nice to know that some actors are actively attempting to shake off their type-cast images and go against the grain.

Rupert Grint has had a tough time post-Harry Potter with negative press for the film Wild Target and limited success with Into the White. Personally, I thought Grint was a lot of fun in the Harry Potter series, but his cheeky grin and fiery red-hair twists his actual characteristics with the role indefinitely. Hopefully, this recent news may be enough to shake off his childhood role for the foreseeable future.

Indeed, akin to Grint, Elijah Wood could’ve had a tough time after The Lord of the Rings considering, in a similar manner, he was so integral to the series. Instead, Wood played completely against type in Sin City and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. In both films, though they were successful in their own right, they also showed how Elijah Wood could play much, much more than a Hobbit. Psychopath – easy; Creepy, lecherous boyfriend – done. So much so, Elijah Wood’s cameo in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey didn’t give any impression that he was harking back to a former role for success but quite the opposite, as he was confident enough that his acting speaks for itself.

As a comparison with Grint's fellow Harry Potter co-stars, Emma Watson has appeared against type in Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring while Daniel Radcliffe challenged everyone when he was mid-series of the Potter franchise on stage in Equus, whilst he is due to appear as the poet Allen Ginsberg in the upcoming Kill your Darlings. So far, both have received positive press. All three are taking on impressive and interesting roles and I hope that Rupert Grint will be able to appear in such interesting roles, because that cheeky grin and fiery red-hair could also hide dark demons or homicidal thoughts that could erase our memory of little Ron Weasley forever.
