UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 19th - Sunday 21st June 2013...
With the UK currently in the grip of a heat wave, the UK box office has been taking a beating over the past month and that was the case again this last weekend, although Disney-Pixar's Monsters University managed to retain top spot with a respectable second-weekend haul of £2.79 million, down just 19% from its rather disappointing opening the previous weekend.
The Monsters, Inc. prequel is now pushing £9 million overall, and with the school holidays now underway there's a good chance the film could go on to pull in a solid enough total by the time it finishes up its run this summer. Also performing strongly is fellow CG-animation Despicable Me 2, which dropped just 17%, becoming the third film this year to reach the £30 million mark in the UK after Iron Man 3 and Les Miserables.
Shifting to the new releases and the final instalment in Edgar Wright's Cornetto trilogy failed to recreate the box office success of Hot Fuzz, taking second with £2,123,576 from 530 screens, compared to a hefty £5.92 opening weekend for its predecessor back in 2007. Meanwhile, the only other newcomer to crack the top ten was the Nicolas Cage / John Cusack serial killer crime thriller The Frozen Ground, which sneaked into ninth place with £89,515. Seems about right for Cage these days...
