After the announcement from Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill that Warner Bros. is to bring DC's two biggest superheroes together in Batman and Superman for a World's Finest movie in 2015, and Bryan Singer assembling the majority of the cast of X-Men: Days of Future Past on stage during Fox's presentation, Marvel Studios needed something special to bring the curtain down on the third day of this year's San Diego Comic-Con. Traditionally, Marvel has knocked it out of the park when it comes to its Hall H presentation and this year was no exception as the studio gave fans in attendance a preview of their Phase Two line-up of Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy - not to mention the surprise announcement from Joss Whedon that The Avengers 2 is now going by the title of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Here's the official logo...
Backing things up and the eagerly-awaited panel got underway with Tom Hiddleston making an appearance in full costume and in character as Loki to whip the crowd into a frenzy with his introduction; check it out here courtesy of Screen Team...
Following Loki's introduction, some footage was screened from Marvel's next offering, the Alan Taylor-directed Thor: The Dark World. Here's a description of said footage, courtesy of Collider...
"It begins with a battle in a burning village with Sif and Warriors Three fighting masked warriors. Thor beams in, makes some quips with Sif, and slays a rock monster. We then see London attacked, Thor beams in, nd beams Jane Foster out to Asgard. We see him recruiting Loki, and the Warriors Three and Sif threaten to kill Loki if he betrays them. This is interspersed with loads of action. It’s tough to go beat by beat, but it looks exciting and finally lets Thor be Thor in a world that fits him. It’s the grand tone we only briefly saw in the beginning of the first movie. While I can’t go through every moment, I will say that the trailer ends with Loki slicing off Thor’s hand, a moment that was greeted with a collective gasp from the audience."
Next up was Captain America: The Winter Soldier, with directors Anthony and Joe Russo joined on stage by Chris Evans (Captain America), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Sebastian Stan (The Winter Soldier), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill) and Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter) and Frank Grillo (Crossbones). After a Q&A, fans were treat to footage from the sequel, and SuperHeroHype has a rundown of what was shown...
“We open in an elevator. Cap is inside, looking out the glass window. I think we’re in DC. We see him from behind. He’s got the shield on his back like a backpack. He turns as more people (Frank Grillo among them) get on. His uniform is new. It looks a lot like the US Agent costume. The music is moody, like The Hunt For Red October. Cap looks Grillo up and down. He senses something isn’t right. More people get on. Cap keeps looking at them. He notices many of them are armed. More and more get on with each floor. The elevator is packed. Cap takes another look at their guns. “Before we get started,” he says, “Does anyone want to get out?” Grillo says something about it “not being personal” and a fight breaks out. It’s a massive fight, mostly shot from above, in the confined space. Cap takes out every single guy. He kicks his shield, flipping it into his hand as he exits.
The Marvel logo comes up. We see Robert Redford in an office. He saying that he joined SHIELD to protect the world. “To build a better world sometimes means tearing the old one down,” he says. “And that makes enemies.” We see the Helicarrier flying. Lots of Black Widow action. Fury shaking hands with Redford. Fury is talking to Cap. “I thought the punishment usually came after the crime,” Cap tells him. We see Mackie running from a futuristic helicopter. He leaps off a building and we see the Falcon wings come out! Cap on his motorcycle, fighting the helicopter. The helicarrier falling out of the sky in flames. The final shot is Cap’s shield on the ground, A metal hand reaches down to pick it up, revealing the Winter Soldier.”
And next up came a surprise panel, with Marvel's Kevin Feige introducing director James Gunn and Guardians of the Galaxy cast members Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer), Michael Rooker (Yondu), Benicio del Toro (The Collector), Lee Pace (Ronan the Accuser), Djimon Hounsou (Korath the Pursuer) and Karen Gillan (Nebula) - the latter showing off her shaved head for the role. And, despite being only a few weeks into filming, they brought some footage which went down a storm with the crowd; here's a description from io9...
We see a desolate alien world, where Peter Quill, aka Starlord, is going inside an ancient temple. He uses a light globe to illuminate the interior, and then goes to steal an old alien orb. Some alien cops come in with big guns to stop him. "Drop it now," orders their leader, Borath (Djimon Hounsou). And he asks Quill who he is. "Starlord," he replies. "Who?" Borath asks. "Starlord, man. Legendary outlaw." Starlord is wounded. "Forget it." Then we see someone activate a wrist transceiver, and we're in an alien prison, where five creatures have been arrested on Zandar. We see holographic "rapsheets" for all five of them — Drax the Destoryer, Gamora (Zoe Saldana), a personal death machine, Rocket Raccoon, who has over 50 charges of vehicular theft and escape from lockup, Groot, a houseplant/muscle, and then Starlord himself.
Rhomann Dey (John C. Reilly) narrates the whole thing with intense snark, especially when he gets to the part about how Peter Quill calls himself Starlord. Listening to this, Quill cranks up his middle finger as if he's working a creaky machine. Later, Quill is in prison and Drax is listening to his personal stereo, which is playing a bouncy "gamba gamba" tune. Quill is offended — and then he gets tased. And then we saw a montage of tons of action footage, including a two-headed alien shooting a gun, a prison riot, tons of Gamora putting the smackdown on people, Rocket Raccoon shooting a big gun with a vicious look on his face. The footage ends with John C. Reilly saying, "They call themselves the Guardians of the Galaxy. What a bunch of A-holes." And we see the five of them lined up, like the Usual Suspects.

IGN also caught up with Kevin Feige after the presentation, with Feige confirming that the Mad Titan Thanos will make an appearance in 2014's big space epic. Could this be the role earmarked for Vin Diesel? Or is it likely we'll be seeing the Fast & Furious star as The Vision, now that Age of Ultron has been confirmed for the Avengers 2?
Despite all the online speculation, there was no word on Marvel's trio of mystery Phase Three movies, but all in all it was another huge Hall H presentation from Marvel Studios, and coupled with Warner Bros.' Man of Steel sequel announcement, it was certainly a great day yesterday for fans of comic book movies. You can watch the entire Marvel Studios panel (minus the footage) here...
