After giving us our first look at footage from next year's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 thanks to a thirty-second teaser earlier this week, Sony and Screen Gems took to Hall H of the San Diego Comic-Con yesterday to showcase next year's superhero sequel alongside its other upcoming blockbusters Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and RoboCop.
Attending The Amazing Spider-Man 2 panel was director Marc Webb, producers Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad, and stars Jamie Foxx (Electro), Dane DeHaan (Harry Osborn) and Spider-Man himself, with Andrew Garfield appearing on stage in full costume and in character, much to the delight of the crowd. As part of the event, a sizzle reel of footage was screened and here's a brief rundown of what was shown courtesy of Entertainment Weekly (or head on over to SlashFilm for a more detailed breakdown):
"An action scene where Spider-Man gets involved in a car chase between a fleet of police cars and Paul Giamatti, who’s playing comic book baddie the Rhino (and appears to be dispatched very quickly.) During the scene, Spidey rescues a dweeby Oscorp employee named Max Dillon, played by Jamie Foxx with a bad combover. A brief scene between Dane DeHaan and Chris Cooper, playing Harry and Norman Osborn; Norman appears very ill. Peter Parker in a graveyard, looking sad. A brief shot of Gwen Stacy, looking at a very familiar bridge. Finally, Electro, flying and firing electric bolts and blacking out Times Square."
During the panel, Marc Webb also played down any fears from fans about the sequel having too many villains, confirming that Foxx's Electro is the main antagonist, with The Rhino only appearing fleetingly (Webb had earlier dismissed reports about Colm Feore is playing The Vulture, while the issue of the Green Goblin was skipped over entirely). And of course, Garfield closed the panel by reiterating his desire to see Spider-Man teaming up with The Avengers, which naturally sent the crowd into an excited frenzy, despite the fact it's probably never going to happen...
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set to open in the UK on April 18th, 2014 ahead of a North American release on May 2nd, 2014.
