SyFy orders Sharknado 2

Well, this won't come as much of a surprise, given that the first movie spent the best part of the weekend trending on Twitter after its TV premiere last Thursday, but according to Deadline, SyFy has now given the green light to Sharknado 2, which will see the flying CG sharks attacking Manhattan.

"Every once in a while, there is a perfect storm – on television," states SyFy's executive vice president Thomas Vitale, seemingly forgetting the fact that only 1.37 million viewers tuned in to see the no-budget monster movie according to Nielsen. "The fans are clamoring for a sequel. Or perhaps it will be a prequel."

And as a special treat for "fans" of the new franchise SyFy is holding a special Twitter contest to name the movie by tweeting suggestions to @SyfyMovies with the hashtag #Sharknado.

Sharknado was directed by Anthony C. Ferrante (Hansel & Gretel) and featured Tara Reid (American Pie), Ian Ziering (Beverly Hills, 90210) and John Heard (Home Alone). Here's the red band trailer:
