UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 12th - Sunday 14th June 2013...

Disney-Pixar's latest Monsters University opened in first place at the UK box office this past weekend, dethroning fellow CG-animated offering Despicable Me 2. However, the Monsters, Inc. prequel only managed to pull in £3,463,917 over the three-day weekend, giving Pixar it's second-lowest UK debut after Cars (£2.7 million); for comparison, Monsters Inc. debuted back in February 2002 with a hefty £9.2 million, although Monsters University has had to contend with competition from Despicable Me 2 (which continues to go strong in second place and is now the highest-grossing animated release of the year), as well as the scorching summer temperatures.
Aside from Monsters University, the only other new wide release was Pacific Rim, with Guillermo del Toro's kaiju homage earning a solid-if-not-spectacular £2,193,500 to claim third place. The only other film to crack seven figures was the mystery thriller Now You See Me, while the rest of the chart were pretty much left fighting for scraps, allowing Indian sports drama Bhaag Milkha Bhaag to claim ninth place with an opening weekend of £89,348.
