Steve McQueen's last film Shame may have proven too controversial for the Academy, but if the stunning first trailer for his next effort 12 Years a Slave is anything to go by, the British filmmaker could find himself right in the Oscar mix when the next awards season rolls around.
12 Years a Slave tells the true story of Solomon Northup, a free man living in New York who found himself kidnapped and sold into slavery in the pre-Civil War United States. Taking on the role of Northup is Chiwetel Ejiofor (Children of Men), who leads an all-star cast which includes McQueen's Hunger and Shame leading man Michael Fassbender alongside the likes of Brad Pitt (World War Z), Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood), Michael K. Williams (Boardwalk Empire), Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek Into Darkness), Paul Giamatti (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) and Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild).

12 Years a Slave is set for a limited release in North America from October 18th and will arrive here in the UK on January 24th, 2014.
