After years as Christopher Nolan's Director of Photography (an Oscar winning one at that), Wally Pfister is stepping out for his directorial debut, Transcendence. Starring Johnny Depp (The Lone Ranger) and Rebecca Hall (Iron Man 3), the film looks revolves around a group of scientists trying to build the first self-aware supercomputer, and Depp plays a man who uploads his brain to the machine.

The film is being co-financed by Beijing-based company DMG Entertainment, but unlike its previous collaborations on Iron Man 3 and Looper, there will be no Chinese-specific footage in Transcendence.  DMG co-founder Dan Mintz tells the L.A. Times that the movie “is about that moment when human consciousness and the insanely fast rise of computing power collide.”  He continued that the story is “more science reality than science fiction” and that it something that is likely to happen in our lifetimes. A very interesting concept.

Plus of course Johnny Depp actually resembles a normal person, so we might actually see his talent.

Several pieces of media have been released - a photo from the set, a poster, and a brief international featurette that  includes a quite awkward looking Hall saying 'Hello' to the Chinese people...

The film also stars Kate Mara (House of Cards), Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins), Paul Bettany (Iron Man 3), Clifton Collins Jr. (Star Trek), Cole Hauser (A Good Day to Die Hard), and Morgan Freeman (The Dark Knight Rises).  Transcendence opens April 18, 2014.
