The animated sequel Despicable Me 2 enjoyed a bumper opening at the UK box office, pulling in a hefty £14,822,427 (including £4.87 million from two days of preview screenings last Saturday and Sunday) to claim the highest debut of the year, overtaking the superhero blockbusters Iron Man 3 (£13.71 million) and Man of Steel (£11.20 million). It's a fantastic return for Universal, with the film already having banked close to three quarters of Despicable Me's £20.2 million total haul back in 2010.

In addition to Despicable Me 2, two other newcomers managed to make their mark in the top ten, with the apocalyptic comedy This Is the End claiming fourth place behind Man of Steel and World War Z with a decent opening of £1,390,323, while the Jason Statham thriller Hummingbird was much less fortunate, earning just £206,731 from 262 sites and continuing The Stath's run of poor form on home soil. However, it did perform significantly better than two other wide releases, with The East and Stand Up Guys both missing out on a place in the top ten with just £65,523 and £44,845 respectively.
