UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 21st - Sunday 23rd June 2013...

Man of Steel may have struggled against Monsters University and World War Z in the States, but here in the UK the Zack Snyder-directed Superman reboot has fought off competition from the Brad Pitt zombie epic to retain first place in the chart, pulling in a solid second-weekend haul of £5.1 million. In just ten days, Man of Steel has banked £21.3 million, overtaking the entire UK gross of 2006's Superman Returns (£16.1 million), as well as giving Snyder his best returns on these shores (his previous best, 300, banked £14.2 million back in 2006.
In second place, World War Z pulled in a healthy £4,535,899; coupled with Man of Steel's haul and a £4.8 million take from Saturday and Sunday previews for Despicable Me 2 (which won't be counted until next weekend's chart), and the rest of the top ten were left fighting for scraps. Dwayne Johnson thriller Snitch debuted in sixth with £268,229, while the only other newcomer to crack the top ten was Richard Linklater's acclaimed drama Before Midnight, which opened with a solid £244,231 from just 106 sites.
Meanwhile, despite being helped along by two days of preview screenings, the returns for Marlon Wayans' latest horror spoof A Haunted House would have left distributor Vertigo's hair standing on end, with the film earning a paltry £153,805 across the five days and falling just short of a place in the top ten.
